  2012 Cauquenina, Clos des Fous

  Cauquenina meaning “girl from Cauquenes” is a blend of several varietals. Each lot was vinified and aged separately to create aromas of black pepper, tea leaves, graphite and violet and full-bodied wine.

  This 2012 vintage is dark ruby red in colour with violet tones. On the nose, it has black and red fruit aromas, predominately cherry and raspberry. The complex nose also has floral notes of chamomile and tea leaves. A touch of minerality comes through on the palate with notes of graphite and earth. The wine is generous and silky with very fine tannins and excellent acidity which enhance the Cauquenina’s liveliness and balance.

  James Suckling rated Clos des Fous Cauquenina 2012 94 points: “A crazy blend of blackberry, blueberry, cloves, leather and dried flowers. Full body with great fruit and round tannins. Such depth and genuine character. Fresh too. Comes from ancient vines in the south of Chile.

  2019 GCM Coast, Viña Echeverría

  This natural wine is a blend of Mourvèdre, Carignan and Garnacha with a dollop of Syrah.   It has enticing aromas of forest fruits, cherry, raspberry and mulberry are laced with vanilla and tobacco nuances through to a rounded palate with a fine tannin structure and a persistent fruity finish.

  The fruit comes from a combination of vineyards located in the Valle de Maule and the Valle de Colchagua. In the Valle de Maule, the ancient soils are made up of granitic sandy loam, which is formed from granite from the Coastal Mountains. The soils are full of quartz and are mineral-rich, which enables the vines to express their full fruit potential. In the Valle de Colchagua, the alluvial soil offers excellent drainage properties, oxygenation and deep development of the vine’s roots, which creates exceptional conditions for the production of high-quality fruit.

  2014 ‘Cariñena’ Huaso de Sauzal, Bodegas El Viejo Almacén de Sauzal

  Renan Cancino is one of Chile’s most sought-after viticulturists, and while he has made his name for tending vines, his wine production under the Huaso de Sauza brand is also turning heads. Cancino is a natural winemaker whose philosophy is making wines how they were always made historically in Chile – naked. Everything is done the traditional way here: vines are worked by hand, the vineyards are worked by draft horse, and there has never been any use of irrigation or chemicals.

  Cariñena is made from Carignan grafted onto free-standing País rootstock on granitic soils in the town of Sauzal.  Cariñena is a rustic wine with expressive aromas of violet, rose petal, oak, smoke and mushroom.  The palate is brimming with flavours of cherry, strawberry, raspberry, liquorice and anise.   The finish is mouthwatering, like a mountain breeze!

  “I have never seen such an artisanal and true to tradition way of making wines. The nose is a clean, focused and pure expression of the grape, with the violets and earthy, slightly rustic aromas. No sulfur is ever used at the winery, yet the wines are so clean and pure that it’s hard to believe. The palate is medium-bodied with some earthy, slightly grainy tannins and with great acidity.   The grapes for this wine were carefully selected from small plots. The Cabernet Sauvignon comes from estate vineyards planted in the early 1990s, in Pirque and Los Morros, in Alto Maipo. The Pirque vineyard contains alluvial soils with medium composition with a high level of stone content, whereas Los Morros consists of soils of colluvial-alluvial origin. Both soil types have medium to low fertility, good depth of 1.5 to 2 metres and good drainage; ideal conditions to produce wines of character. The Carménère grapes come from an estate vineyard in the Colchagua Valley planted in the mid-1980s. The clay loam soil textures are dominant which is ideal for this variety as they retain soil moisture ensuring optimum and prolonged ripening. The Carignan grapes come from a rain-fed vineyard planted in 1958, in the Maule Valley. It contains soils with clay texture, high quartz content, subsoil of granitic origin and good drainage.
