2019 La Montesa Crianza, Palacios Remondo

    £1795 31% saving

Alvaro Palacios has spent decades pioneering a new order of fine wine across Spain. He has created some of the country’s most iconic wines by championing terroir and native grapes whose potential had been long overlooked and untapped.

Palacios Remondo is his family’s Rioja estate, tucked in the far eastern corner of the Oriental district. The story in this rugged, high-altitude scrubland is about Garnacha—the territory’s traditional variety and also one of Alvaro’s biggest passions. By focusing on elevating Garnacha-driven wines that are expressive of and authentic to this stunning side of Rioja, Alvaro is continuing to reshape the future of Spanish fine wine.

This 2019 La Montesa Crianza is made from Garnacha and a small amount of Tempranillo, it is incredibly well-balanced with velvety red-fruit notes and hints of sweet spice, orange peel and dulcet yellow peaches found both in the nose and on the palate. An exceptional, Mediterranean Garnacha-based wine that excels with every vintage.

  • 2020 Mongrana, Querciabella

    2020 Mongrana, Querciabella

    £1795

Mongrana is the quintessential expression of the colours, sights and sounds of the Maremma region: fruity and intense, fresh and embracing, the wine takes its name – and its character – from that of the noble family of knights depicted by the Italian Renaissance poet Ludovico Ariosto in his epic masterpiece Orlando Furioso.

The charm of Mongrana does not take long to reveal. Well-defined aromas of ripe fruit, morello cherry, blackberry and blueberry jump out of the glass, anticipating a complex bouquet of kirsch, ivy, and pine needles, enriched by a touch of liquorice.

On the palate, it offers a juicy, fresh sip with soft tannins. The long finale is savoury, with a mineral note that persists in the mouth.

  • 2017/8 Shiraz, TahbilkRed Wine

    2017/8 Shiraz, Tahbilk

    £1950

Tahbilk Shiraz is sourced from nearly 30 hectares of vines planted at various times from the 1930s through the early 2000s. Made using traditional Tahbilk techniques; fermentation takes place in 150 + year old open vats, before maturation in French and American oak for 18 months before bottling. The resultant releases are noted as being fruit-driven wines of much flavour and substance, proven over the years to develop added character when cellared. Varietally expressive with ample plum and blackberry fruits, there is warm earth and spicy savouriness that immediately appeals with a backbone of fine, opulent tannins and a rich, persistent finish.

Tahbilk’s vineyards are grouped along the banks of the Goulburn River, a branch of it which flows through the estate. The vines are grown at around 134 metres elevation of gently undulating and flat terrain. The soils are sandy loam with ferric oxide content, which vary from very fine sand near the anabranch to denser loams on the plains. Tahbilk has Shiraz vineyards dating back from the 1860s to the 1990s. The oldest surviving block is the ‘1860 block’; planted on its own roots in sandy soils, which has made it impossible for phylloxera to colonise the vine roots.

  • 2019 Pinot Noir, Old StageRed Wine

    2019 Pinot Noir, Old Stage

    £1950

A balanced and graceful Pinot Noir with aromas of strawberry, raspberry and rhubarb and a touch of sage. Beautifully integrated oak supports the pure fruit through to a silky finish.

The fruit comes from two distinct Pinot Noir vineyards: Danny’s Vineyard and Grava, two of the most northerly plantings in Monterey County. The vineyards nestle up to the Gabilan Mountain Range on the eastern side of the Salinas Valley; approximately 10 miles directly across from the Santa Lucia Highlands. The marine influence of the nearby Monterey Bay and the morning fog which clears for the afternoon sun, results in a cool mesoclimate and a long hang-time for the fruit. The grapes reflect the cool climate character, with complex aromatics and flavours and natural balancing acidity.

  • 2018 Dark Prince Nero d’Avola, Fox GordonRed Wine

The Fox Gordon estate vineyards are located in the Adelaide Hills, overlooking McLaren Vale. It is a rocky site, which suits this very vigorous variety as the site has very little topsoil, slowing down the vigour.

  • 2022 Estate Pinot Gris, Paringa Estate Wine Republic Heros White Wine

2022 Estate Pinot Gris, Paringa Estate

    £2095

This superb Pinot Gris has lifted varietal aromas of fresh-cut pear and green apple, leading to a refreshing palate of crisp, ripe pear and vibrant citrus fruit flavours. This Pinot Gris is richly flavoured with a lovely mid-palate texture and balance.

The grapes for this wine come from 2 vineyards.  The 1st  is situated in the cool climate sub-region of Red Hill at an altitude of 146 metres above sea level. The estate vines are 14 years old and they provide 50% of the fruit for this wine. The remaining 50% comes from a contracted grower in Moorooduc which is a slightly warmer site and adds complexity and a layered dimension to the wine. The Mornington Peninsula is influenced by the cooling maritime climate, which helps the grapes to retain acidity as they ripen. The soils are generally red basalt, which stores sufficient water supplies to keep the vine irrigated through the warm summer season.  These soils are the result of ancient lava flows, are iron-rich, moderately fertile and drain surface water easily. This results in healthy vines with deep root systems, producing high-quality berries that translate into intense, concentrated wines.
