  • 2020 Pinotage, Ernst Gouws & CoRed Wine

2020 Pinotage, Ernst Gouws & Co

    £1495

Ernst Gouws, the jovial patriarch of the Gouws family and winemaker extraordinaire, firmly believes in the French philosophy that the quality of the wine is inextricably linked to the origin of the vineyards and its terroir. Grapes are therefore hand-harvested from site-specific vineyards around the town of Stellenbosch, which is world-famous for producing quality, fruit-driven wines.

This 2018 Pinotage is a classic example of this uniquely South African red wine.  It has a bold ruby colour and complementary aromas of wild bramble, ripe plums, exotic spices, baked Christmas cake and dried pears. The exotic spice profile is reminiscent of a trip to a Marrakesh open-air market where the spice aromas linger and infuse everything.  The robust, yet ripe tannins, bolster the structure without the addition of any rough edges. True to its varietal character, the wine ends with lingering flavours of sweetish red berry fruit compote.   The wine vinified in the traditional manner and was then matured for nine months in second fill French oak barrels.

The typical fruit sweetness on the finish of Pinotage makes it an ideal partner for spicy Asian-style dishes – think aromatic curries, biryani or peppered squid served with wasabi. The plush red fruit flavours will also compliment ratatouille and oxtail.

  • 2018 Pinotage, OlifantsbergRed Wine

    2018 Pinotage, Olifantsberg

    £1595

Bright notes of cherry, wild strawberry fruit and ripe raspberry are interlaced by hints of spice and earthy notes. This wine is made in a pure fruit-driven style, with supple tannins and reveals a fresh and elegant expression of Pinotage.

The vineyard is located on the fertile slopes of the Olifantsberg Mountain Range where it endures wide diurnal temperature differences and strong winds, at altitudes from 250 to 450 metres above sea level. During the winter the mountain peaks are snow-covered, keeping the vines dormant for longer. Cold winters, coupled with the summer winds, ensures the slow ripening of the grapes; helps to maintain healthy vines; and contributes freshness and elegance to the wines. The soils in the vineyard comprise a unique sandy shale with a clay subsoil, which lends structure to the resulting wine. The Pinotage trellised vines are 11 years old and are farmed in a sustainable manner.

  • 2020 Pinotage, Groot ConstantiaRed Wine

    2020 Pinotage, Groot Constantia

    £2495

Aromas of ripe strawberry and raspberry combine with black cherry and plum while delicate use of French oak adds a hint of cacao. The bold, ripe fruit flavours follow on the palate and the fine tannin structure ensures a long, elegant finish.

The vineyards are located on the steep valley on the eastern side of Table Mountain. The grapes for this wine were grown in various blocks that range from 39 metres to 160 metres above sea level. All the slopes are south to south-east facing. The climate is Mediterranean with cooling breezes from the Atlantic Ocean encouraging balance and complexity in the grapes. The average rainfall is approximately 1,100mm per annum, which nourishes the predominantly Cartref and Glenrosa soil – a gravelly soil with low fertility. The climate, combined with the cool southern slopes and deep mountain soils provide the ideal setting for the making of this top-quality wine.

  • 2019 Pinotage ‘1900’, Spioenkop WinesRed Wine

    2019 Pinotage ‘1900’, Spioenkop Wines

    £2750

A fruit-driven style of Pinotage, with a generous array of red cherry, violet, grenadine and strawberry underpinned by freshly picked black plum, graphite, black olives and spice. Elegant and smooth with a stony freshness and a satisfying, satin-textured finish.

The grapes come from the Bottelary Hills ward of Stellenbosch, in the Western Cape. The westerly facing vineyard is located at 300 metres’ elevation and is planted on granite and sandstone soils which offer free-draining properties. The climate is generally hot and dry; however maritime influences from False Bay to the south provide moderating sea-breezes, which help to keep the vineyards healthy and impart balancing freshness to the grapes. Pinotage, South Africa’s signature grape variety, is a crossing between Pinot Noir and Cinsault, (the latter was previously known as Hermitage in South Africa) from which it takes its name.
