Floral violet notes are followed by an intense fruity expression of red plum, strawberry and blackberry. Full-bodied but smooth and balanced, with subtle minerality this is a classic expression of Argentinian Malbec.  The wines names ‘1300’ is derived from the fact the grapes were grown in vineyards located at over 1,300 metres above sea level. • 2014 The Florita Riesling, Jim Barry – Magnum Wine Republic Heros White Wine

2014 The Florita Riesling, Jim Barry – Magnum

    £5995

There is nothing quite like a magnum for sharing and this iconic 2014 ‘The Florita’ Riesling from Jim Barry is just the ticket.

This magnificent wine opens in the glass with delicate floral aromas of citrus blossom, rose water, lime citrus and hints of green pear.  A wine of immense drive and purity.  It shows the
hallmarks of a youthful but restrained Florita with a promise of more to come. Lime citrus is dominant with elements of pear and rose water with long lingering acidity.
A magnificent benchmark dry Riesling to be enjoyed now or with careful cellaring for the next ten years.

The Florita Story – It starts in 1946, just after the war, when Leo Buring bought land at Watervale and planted Pedro Ximénez for sherry – the preferred wine of Australians at the time. He named the vineyard Florita, which is Spanish for ‘little flower’ – a reference to the sherry flor (or flower), the film of yeast that covers the dry flor sherry as it matures in its ullaged casks.
Public tastes shifted, table wine became fashionable, and in 1962 Buring’s winemaker John Vickery began to remove PX and plant Riesling. “He started to make Riesling (wine), which began to be seen as the future of Australian white wine,” says Barry. Indeed, Vickery and the Leo Buring brand became almost synonymous with Riesling.

“In 1986 Philip Morris (the tobacco company which owned the Leo Buring brand at the time) had six years supply of Riesling in its cellars, and no-one was drinking it – Chardonnay was the new fashion. They decided to sell the Florita vineyard.   My brothers and I went to the auction. I was 24.  Mum said ‘You’re not allowed to buy it’. She said we already had plenty of vineyards. We told Dad he’d better buy it, and that would let us off the hook.  Southcorp owned the Florita trademark at the time, and although the Barrys began using the grapes immediately, they couldn’t use the name.
“I had to wait eight years until the registration period was up, but then Southcorp renewed it for another 10 years, so I had to wait 18 years all told, and I registered the name Florita two days after it lapsed.

Eighteen years is a long time to wait for a drink.”

  • 2011 Chardonnay, Heytesbury, Vasse Felix Wine Republic Heros

    2011 Chardonnay, Heytesbury, Vasse Felix

    £7500

Heytesbury Chardonnay is a barrel selection of the very best Chardonnay parcels from each vintage.  This 2011 was fermented entirely with wild yeasts and matured in French oak barriques with battonage for nine months.

Age has given a beautiful golden colour to the wine with a nose that sings!  With aromas of fragrant pineapple and lemon freshness, the nose gently releases its cache of wild barrel ferment characters. Crusty apple pie, pretty lavender, struck stone flintiness, plus subtle lamb fat and bay leaf provide shadow and depth to the bright citrus that shines from the core.  The palate is intricate, luscious and mouth-watering, reflecting pineapple, custard apple and water chestnut, lightly spiced with cloves, vanillin oak and almond biscuit flavours. Opens with juicy fruit and evolves to a tight acid-drying finish, that carries the pristine and complex flavours for remarkable length.

2017 Châteauneuf-du-Pape ‘Cuvée Barberini’, Domaine de la Solitude *Magnum*

    £11000

Domaine de la Solitude’s wines are renowned for their characteristic elegance whilst expressing the true origins of their terroir.

The Cuvée Barberini is a tribute to the founding fathers of the Estate and is made only in the best years from the best parcels of old vines of Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah.   This Domaine has one of the best terroirs in Châteauneuf-du-Pape with its abundance of rounded quartzite stones, known as “Galet Roulés” terroir.  These stones absorb heat during the day then radiate it at night, promoting full grape maturity. The grapes are manually harvested, once each variety has reached phenological ripeness.    2017 is classic Rhône vintage for reds and this wine is no exception.   Well textured, ripe, full-bodied – delivering rich black fruits, mocha expresso and a subtle hint of smoke. • 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Gold Reserve, Carmen – 3000ml/JeroboamRed Wine

2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Gold Reserve, Carmen – 3000ml/Jeroboam

    £25000

This single-vineyard, ultra-premium, ultra-rare jeroboam of Vina Carmen’s Gold Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon was imported by us many years ago along with a jeroboam of 2004 and has with its sibling been in our cellars ever since.   Yes, the label is slightly battered but the levels are perfect and it is a magnificent celebration drink!    As with all top end Cabernet Sauvignon it has the ability to age very well and the winemaker suggested a maturity date of 2025 for this vintage and wine.  The fact it is a Jeroboam should add another 5 years to that!    We recently opened a magnum of both the 2004 & 2005 and the wines were sensational.

This 2005 is brimming with ripe berries, espresso, chocolate syrup and cassis with sweet, exotic spice aromas. Velvety on the palate with dense berry and mocha flavours, the tannins are powerful but ripe and the linger is substantial.  A family celebration bottle if ever there was!
