  • 2019 Côtes du Rhône Villages Plan de Dieu Vielles Vignes, Domaine Saint DamienRed Wine

2019 Côtes du Rhône Villages Plan de Dieu Vielles Vignes, Domaine Saint Damien

    £1695

An opulent and spicy full-flavoured wine, with layered flavours of prunes and garrigue from this award-winning producer.

The vineyards are located in the relatively new appellation of Plan de Dieu, which translates as Plan of God in English. Despite the first historical mentions of the “Plan Dei”, which date back to a parchment from 1326, the lieu-dit of Plan de Dieu was only designated a red wine producing appellation in 2005. The climate here is classic Mediterranean with the additional influence of the Mistral winds. The terroir sits on an alluvial plateau with calcareous gravel, which retains water, helping to preserve the vines during the hot and often arid summer months.

  • 2018 La Touge, AOP Minervois la Liviniere, Château MarisRed Wine

2018 La Touge, AOP Minervois la Liviniere, Château Maris

    £1695

Perhaps the world’s greenest wine project, Château Maris is located within the of AOP Minervois La Livinière in the heart of the Languedoc, where the Mediterranean sea and the Pyrenees mountains come together.  Winemaker Robert Eden is strongly committed to sustainable agriculture and follows organic and biodynamic principles.

The winding road leading to the plots of Syrah vines located on the terraces at the foot of La Livinière gave its name to this expressive wine.   In the glass La Rouge opens with aromas rich black fruits, smoke and cocoa. Inky purple in the glass the palate displays full-bodied richness, beautifully integrated acidity, juicy ripe tannins and no hard edges.

  • 2014 ‘Cariñena’ Huaso de Sauzal, Bodegas El Viejo Almacén de SauzalRed Wine

2014 ‘Cariñena’ Huaso de Sauzal, Bodegas El Viejo Almacén de Sauzal

    £2750

Renan Cancino is one of Chile’s most sought-after viticulturists, and while he has made his name for tending vines, his wine production under the Huaso de Sauza brand is also turning heads. Cancino is a natural winemaker whose philosophy is making wines how they were always made historically in Chile – naked. Everything is done the traditional way here: vines are worked by hand, the vineyards are worked by draft horse, and there has never been any use of irrigation or chemicals.

Cariñena is made from Carignan grafted onto free-standing País rootstock on granitic soils in the town of Sauzal.  Cariñena is a rustic wine with expressive aromas of violet, rose petal, oak, smoke and mushroom.  The palate is brimming with flavours of cherry, strawberry, raspberry, liquorice and anise.   The finish is mouthwatering, like a mountain breeze!

“I have never seen such an artisanal and true to tradition way of making wines. The nose is a clean, focused and pure expression of the grape, with the violets and earthy, slightly rustic aromas. No sulfur is ever used at the winery, yet the wines are so clean and pure that it’s hard to believe. The palate is medium-bodied with some earthy, slightly grainy tannins and with great acidity. This is more serious, closed than the Garnacha, but at a similar, very high-quality level. Simply unbelievable. 5,000 bottles produced.”  93 Luis Gutierrez – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

  • 2015 Old Vine Carignan, Calder Wine CompanyRed Wine

2015 Old Vine Carignan, Calder Wine Company

    £3500

The 2015 Carignane is built from two great sources in Mendocino County, both farmed by the father-son team of Don and Darrin Colombini. The primary source is the Rovera vineyard, planted in 1942 in the sandy, quartz-flecked soils of the eastern bench of Redwood Valley. The Rovera vines have incredibly small clusters and berries, with correspondingly low yields—less than 2 tons per acre in 2015. This gives the fruit tremendous intensity and depth, backed by lightning-rod acidity. The Cemetery vineyard planted 1954, is dry-farmed in almost pure gravel and contributes bright cherry fruit and aromatic lift.

The resultant wine features vivacious blackberry and raspberry aromas inflected with iron-like mineral complexity. Carignane has an intensely savoury edge to its fruit: stones, smoke, and celery seeds, evoking the wild herbs and rocks of its homeland in the Priorat of Spain. The palate is rich and generous, with plenty of structure from Carignane’s characteristic acidity and tannin.

  • 2019 ‘Compartir’, Château de l’OuRed Wine

    2019 ‘Compartir’, Château de l’Ou

    £4500

A full-bodied, rich and yet seamlessly elegant Roussillon expression with abundant notes of kirsch and blackberry layered with ground pepper, garrigue herbs and spice. Classic richness is perfectly balanced by considerable elegance.

A blend of Syrah, Grenache and Carignan, the vines thrive at an elevation of 350 metres in the Maury terroir of the northern part of the Roussillon. The climate is Mediterranean, strongly influenced by cooling coastal breezes combined with mountain freshness from the foothills of the Pyrenees which balance the hot, arid summers. The terroir is made up of a mosaic of brown and black schist soils, which date back to the Cretaceous period. The schistous marl produces shallow soils, which force the vines to send their roots deep in search of water and nutrients. The vineyard is certified organic.
