The vineyards for this wine are located in the area around Menfi on the south-western coast of Sicily. Vines grow on south and south–east facing hills at around 250 metres above sea level on limestone soil. Vines are Guyot trained and planted at a density of 4,000-4,500 plants per hectare.

2020 Great Southern Chardonnay, Three Lions

Peach and nectarine aromas dominate with hints of nougat and lemon blossom, and a touch of waxy citrus leaf. On the palate, crunchy white nectarine gives a real sense of freshness, balanced perfectly with a mineral drive, creamy texture and subtle toasty notes.
Plantagenet’s 126 hectares of vineyards have been carved out of the region’s distinctive Marri soils, named after the massive native Marri, or Red Gum, trees that grow there. Fruit for this wine was sourced from two of the estate’s sites, Rocky Horror and Crystal Brook. Located 15km south of Mount Barker, Rocky Horror was planted in 1999 on soils consisting of deep gravel loam over ironstone with, with a north and west-facing aspect. Crystal Brook, established in 1988, lies 4km from Rocky Horror on a fertile mix of gravel loam and sand soils. All vineyard operations are completed with an active focus on sustainability in order to maximise biodiversity.

In the glass, it is a golden colour with slight greenish tones, the nose has notes of green apples, pear and hints of toast and butter. The vineyards are on the coast just south of Buenos Aires – an experiment, a risk, a dream – and it works; this beauty swirls with oatmeal, hazelnut, soft white apple flesh, peach and honey. Made from exclusively estate-grown grapes, the Gravel Castle Chardonnay is a zesty, fruit-driven and unoaked Chardonnay, created from Burgundian still wine clones. It displays fresh, citrus aromas, refreshing tropical fruit flavours and a smooth, textured palate.
Simpsons Wine Estate is situated in the Elham Valley; an unspoilt seam in the North Downs of Kent where the contours of the land, the climate and the soil are excellent for viticulture. The intensely lime-rich chalk soil forms part of the same chalk ridge that stretches from southern England through Champagne and on to Burgundy. The grapes come from the Roman Road vineyard, named after the route the Romans first marched when invading England in AD 43. They are grown on south-facing slopes, ensuring heat accumulation in the day and cold air drainage at night. The vineyard is less than eight miles from the coast, providing a crucial maritime influence insulating the fruit against intense temperature variations.

2020 ‘The Raptor’ Chardonnay, Lake Chalice
£1950Add to BasketA full-bodied Chardonnay with bold flinty notes surrounded by peach undertones. The creamy palate has a wonderful balancing freshness and reveals layers of flint, lemon blossom and biscuity nuances complemented by subtle oak spice.
The grapes are sourced exclusively from mature vines within a single hectare vineyard block called the Reed Vineyard. This beautiful vineyard is situated on an old riverbed, where the shallow, loamy Renwick soils are derived from stony alluvium and offer the wine excellent drainage. The vines are a mixture of Burgundian Chardonnay clones; predominantly they are clone 95, with a proportion of Mendoza clones and some clone 15. The fruit from this block has become renowned for delivering crisp, flinty flavours.
The grapes were carefully selected and vinified with 100% wild yeasts. Some were vinified as whole bunches, to add complexity. Fermentation took place in a selection of new and seasoned French oak barriques, lasting 10 months where malolactic fermentation took place imparting a creamy texture.

The Chardonnay grapes come from the estate vineyard in Stellenbosch. The vineyards benefit from being 14 kilometres from False Bay, where the strong maritime influence cools the vineyards in the hot, summer months, ensuring good levels of natural grape acidity in the final wine, central to the Mulderbosch style of fresh, balanced wines. The soil is made up of decomposed sandstone with some granitic conglomerate stones, known as ‘Koffieklip’. This iron-ferrite rich soil produces wines with more minerality and intensity.

2020 Petit Chablis, Louis Michel
£2150Add to BasketA family of winemakers since the 19th century the Michel family vineyards are planted on the first slopes to be farmed by Cistercian monks during the 11th century.
The 25 hectares encapsulate 3 Grand Crus and 7 Premier Crus as well as Chablis and Petit Chablis terroir. Guillaume Michel runs the domaine now, 80% of the vines are farmed organically, he is strictly sustainable in the vineyards with the highest level of HVE certification. Biodiversity is vital to their work with hedgerow populations of insects and a population of bees humming through the vineyards. In the winery, the wines are vinified only in stainless steel, using natural yeasts to preserve the expression of terroir in its purest form. Without the presence of oxygen in the early stages of their development these wines take longer to express themselves in bottle, but richly reward those who wait.
This 2020 Petit Chablis comes from a very special vineyard overlooking the Valmur and Les Clos grand crus. It will reveal floral notes of hawthorn and grape blossom. The wine is particularly lively in the mouth, with sea breezes and a delicious chalky finish.
