2020 ‘The Black’ Shiraz ‘Winemakers Reserve’, Berton Vineyard
£1495Add to BasketThe Winemakers Reserve Black Shiraz is a multi-award winning wine and an outstanding example of Australian Shiraz with deep colour and aromas of blackberry and plum over toasty coffee and spicy oak. The palate is full-flavoured and intense with rich plum, blueberry and mocha notes. The tannins are ripe and dense imparting great structure and length to the palate.
Predominantly sourced from the vineyards in Padthaway, South Australia, where the soils are sandy loam over clay, formed on old lagoon sediments. These sandy soils lead to poor nutrient and water retention which helps to concentrate the flavours in the fruit. The vines are grown on single wire trellises, ensuring an open canopy. Drip irrigation is used in the vineyards to manage the water supply and reduce evaporation, as water is applied directly above the roots. The fruit was harvested during the cooler nights to retain freshness.

2018 The Love Grass Shiraz, d’Arenberg
£1595Add to BasketThe Love Grass 2020 is a Shiraz straight from the d’Arenberg playbook. As a young wine when first opened, it may appear closed, dark and brooding. Tar, earth and black liquorice. Air and time both help to massage out the abundant sweet fruits, blackberry and plum with an undertone of fennel and spice. In a similar way, the palate starts quite muscular and tight but over time relaxes into a more generous juicy wine. As the juicy fruit evolves the initially rustic tannins start to settle into it like sinking into a plush armchair. The strong earth characters are a nod to the organic and biodynamic principles adopted in the vineyard. The character of the fruit is gently supported, rather than dominated, by savoury old oak barrels. All in all, this is a structural wine that over-delivers at the price point and will certainly benefit from decanting whilst rewarding those with the patience to cellar it well for 5 to 10 years
Lovegrass is a weed that grows in the vineyards and its sticky flowers affectionately attach themselves to vineyard workers’ socks. This Shiraz will linger with you in the same way that the flowers do!

2018 Footbolt Shiraz, d’Arenberg
£1650Add to BasketThis delicious highly regarded shiraz is named after Footbolt, the prize racehorse of Joseph Osborn. In 1912 Joseph sold his beloved horses to purchase the d’Arenberg property and so the wine making story began.
In the glass, this 2018 Shiraz has a lifted, aromatic nose with luscious plum and red berry aromas. The palate is soft and cuddly and concludes with some firm tannin and acidity. There are flavours of mulberry, pomegranate, dried herbs and earth, with a finish that is a little wild and rustic.

2020 ‘Bull Ant’ Shiraz, Lake Breeze
£1650Add to BasketThe playful label was inspired by the bullants which are known to harass vineyard workers. This 2020 vintage is a ripe, full-bodied wine that has benefited from 15 months of oak maturation. It shows aromas reminiscent of plums and chocolate with a touch of earthy complexity. The palate is rich and full of black fruits and has a long soft finish.
A wine that could partner a cheese plate equally as well as a rare fillet steak. It is drinking well now but will age gracefully for the remainder of this decade.

2018 ‘The Independent’ Shiraz & Mataro , Teusner
£1950Add to BasketLet it be known that Kym Teusner once said to his peers that Barossa Shiraz could be a bit boring. Fairly independent thinking coming from a Barossa winemaker. Defending himself, Kym will insist what he did say was that as good as Barossa Shiraz is, adding Mataro will make it taste even better!
This wine is jam-packed with Barossa Shiraz and Mataro (Mourvedre) flavours….plums, black fruits and warm spices of cinnamon, nutmeg and 5 spices. There’s a touch of mid-palate sweetness, some mocha and black olive and the soft tannins are integrated seamlessly through the mid-palate. The subtle use of oak allows the rich dark fruit to take centre stage.

2017 The Laughing Magpie, d’Arenberg
£1995Add to BasketThis 2016 Shiraz/Viognier has a rather dark appearance with a vivid purple hue suggesting a complex dry red. The nose is particularly intense, with peppery spice, hints of fragrant flower and perfume aromas, plus nectarines, apricots, ginger and herbs from the small parcel of viognier that the Shiraz is co-fermented with. On the palate, the Shiraz is more dominant with sweeter fruit characters like blackberry, blueberry and boysenberry. The palate is rich and generous and soft silky tannins.
The Kookaburra is a native Australian bird famous for its distinctive laughing call, Chester’s young daughters named them “Laughing Magpies”. The Magpie plumage is black with a stripe of white feathers, representing McLaren Vale’s first ever blend combining the (black) Shiraz and its white partner, Viognier.

2019 The Riebke Shiraz, Teusner
£2100Add to BasketThe Riebke Shiraz is dedicated to the Riebke Brothers who have vineyards located in the Northern Barossa sub-districts of Ebenezer, Moppa and Kalimna. Their family has been tending these vines for 5 generations. The brothers owned an old vine Grenache vineyard and were selling the fruit to some of the industry’s big boys, however, the low yields and low prices being paid meant that the brothers were running the vineyard at a loss. In stepped winemaker, Kym Teusner, who together with his business partner, managed to scrape up enough cash to purchase about a quarter of the fruit – enough to stave off the brother’s plans of scrapping the vineyard. Since that day the Riebekes have become an integral supplier and Teusner gracefully acknowledges that the quality of this wine is really due to the brother’s viticultural talent, adding ‘Those guys have some of the best-kept vineyards in the Ebenezer district’.
In the glass it has a very deep midnight black core with a dark red black tinged hue. Unfurling from the glass are spicy dark plum and liquorice scents which meld into toasty vanillin cedar and peppered earth notes. Generous and juicy the medium to full bodied palate features ripe dark plum and liquorice fruits over spicy vanillin cedar, scorched earth and pepper characters. Polished tannins with a fleshy aftertaste that has plenty of pepper and spice to it.

2019 ‘The Joshua’ Grenache, Mataro & Shiraz, Teusner
£2200Add to BasketJoshua is the wine that started Teusner as a wine producer. Kym Teusner and his business partner Mick Page were in a pub sipping a few beers. They overheard a couple of old growers having a conversation about the low, low prices being paid for their old vine Grenache…to the point they were going to rip out the vines and plant Chardonnay! Horrified they hatched a rescue plan, scrambling together some cash, the grapes found a new home and the vines stayed in the ground where they belonged and Teusner Wines was born.
Named after Mick’s first son, Joshua is a blend of Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz. Made from 100-year-old vines it has a delicious mix of light and dark fresh ripe berried fruits, cured meats and lifted spice on the nose that sets you up for a mouthful of savoury and gamey flavour in the mouth. Kept away from oak and released young it showcases the juicy, spicy, flavoursome red wines of the Barossa.

The 2019 Cricket Pitch Red is a multi-regional blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Shiraz sourced from premium regions including Beechworth, McLaren Vale and Coonawarra.
In the glass it has a beautiful deep colour with youthful tints, the aromas open with juicy berry fruits and subtle spices. The palate is juicy and fruit driven with fine long tannins. All in all a great glass of wine and although it is made as a drink-now style, it always benefits from a few extra years in bottle.

2020 `Wanderer’s Heart` Cape Red Blend, Thorne & Daughters
£2395Add to BasketThis wine from Thorne & Daughters is an intense and complex red blend from Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah carefully sourced from prime vineyard sites across the Western Cape. On the nose, well-defined aromas of red cherry and violet combine with spicy notes of cinnamon and cardamom to burst from the glass. On the palate, the wine is poised with supple tannins and juicy acidity, leading to a multi-layered and moreish finish.
The ‘Wanderer’s Heart’ is made from a blend of grapes from carefully selected growers across the Western Cape. The Grenache is sourced from dry-farmed vineyards on the Paardeberg Mountain in the Swartland which has a combination of clay and granite soils. The Mourvèdre is the fruit of 12-year-old vines planted on clay/gravel soils in Bot River. The Syrah also comes from Bot River from 12-year-old vines planted on shale. The vineyards are all farmed sustainably and harvesting is done by hand.

2021 Shiraz, Seppeltsfield

The Peninsula label represents the first tier in the Paringa Estate range and are sourced from the Estate managed vineyards in Red Hill, and from a few other carefully selected vineyards around the Peninsula. In the glass, a bouquet of spicy blackberry fruit along with lifted floral viognier aromatics lead onto a fruit-driven palate of black fruits, black pepper and fine-grained tannins and silky texture. A medium-bodied wine with texture and power but with a fineness that reflects its cool climate origin.
