Swartland Winery

2020 Bush Vines Syrah, Swartland Winery

Western Cape, South AfricaVintage: 2020

Small berries big taste! The Swartland wine region of the Western Cape encompasses a uniquely diverse topographic area, with a myriad of microclimates, soils and sites which give rise to wines of full flavour and complexity.  Swartland Winery produces premium single-varietal wines from the characterful bush vines grown in the heart of Swartland, yielding wines of distinctive depth and concentration.

The Bush Vines Range from Swartland represents their premium release wines, made from low-yielding bush vines and oak aged for a minimum of 12 months.  This 2020 Syrah has a forthcoming, complex nose with an earthy bouquet of spice, white pepper, violet and an earthy smokiness complemented by red berry fruit. This beautifully full and complex wine delivers lively red berry fruits, firm tannins and good oak integration with a well-balanced finish.

Description

Big open skies, arid deserts, the vast flowing landscape, with its unforgiving climate and rugged bush vines, this is wild country, this is Swartland. The contrast with manicured Constantia and oh-so-cool Stellenbosch couldn’t be greater. But right now, Swartland is the most exciting wine region in South Africa. A new wave of winemakers are making ground-breaking wines from Rhône varietals and it is part of a revolution that has got everybody talking. The Swartland Winery is producing iconic and award-winning wines in this fashionable and dynamic region, so naturally, we are delighted to offer their wines.

Swartland Winery is situated about 70km north of Cape Town and 3km outside the town of Malmesbury on the road to Paarl.  In the heart of the Swartland the winery harvests its grapes from wine farms spread out on the hills around Malmesbury.  The vineyards benefit from the constant cool breezes that blow off the Atlantic Ocean, effectively sustaining the many microclimates, while the proximity to mountain ranges adds its own dimension to the physical characteristics of the grape berry.

The grapes were harvested at optimal phenolic ripeness and then fermented in open topped fermentation tanks at 25°C. The wine was pressed gently after 10 days of skin contact. Pump-overs and aeration took place during the first half of the fermentation, which gradually became shorter in frequency and duration. Malolactic conversion took place in stainless steel tanks, softening the palate before being aged in French oak barrels for 12 months, of which 25% were new and 75% were older barrels
