Louis Michel

2020 Petit Chablis, Louis Michel

Burgundy, FranceVintage: 2020

A family of winemakers since the 19th century the Michel family vineyards are planted on the first slopes to be farmed by Cistercian monks during the 11th century.

The 25 hectares encapsulate 3 Grand Crus and 7 Premier Crus as well as Chablis and Petit Chablis terroir. Guillaume Michel runs the domaine now, 80% of the vines are farmed organically, he is strictly sustainable in the vineyards with the highest level of HVE certification. Biodiversity is vital to their work with hedgerow populations of insects and a population of bees humming through the vineyards. In the winery, the wines are vinified only in stainless steel, using natural yeasts to preserve the expression of terroir in its purest form. Without the presence of oxygen in the early stages of their development these wines take longer to express themselves in bottle, but richly reward those who wait.

This 2020 Petit Chablis comes from a very special vineyard overlooking the Valmur and Les Clos grand crus. It will reveal floral notes of hawthorn and grape blossom. The wine is particularly lively in the mouth, with sea breezes and a delicious chalky finish.

Why we love it

The Chablis producer Louis Michel is the benchmark for pure, unoaked Chablis.  Intense and tensile wines are the calling card here, pure and unadorned by style and consistently high in quality.

Description

Prior to 1970 all the wines from this Domaine were fermented and matured in old oak barrels. By 1980 the old oak had been thrown out and the Domaine had switched entirely to stainless steel. Today the Domaine is run by Jean-Loup Michel and is widely recognised as the prime exponents of unoaked Chablis in the region.

It has 21 hectares of vineyards, mainly Premier and Grand Cru. The grapes are fermented at low temperatures in order to preserve their aromatic freshness and so that they may amply reflect the origins of their respective vineyard sites. These are crisp, intensely flavoured wines that display what heights the Chardonnay grape can achieve in its purest and unadorned form and without the intrusion of oak.

The family vineyard, whose vines are 45 years old on average, is located in the heart of the original Chablis terroir, on the most prestigious parcels within a radius of two kilometres from the winery.

The Domaine’s vineyards cover all four appellations: Chablis Grand Cru, Premier Cru, Chablis and Petit Chablis, offering the whole range of aromas that this unique wine can produce. The Domaine makes three prestigious Grand Crus – including the legendary Grenouilles – as well as seven premier Crus.
