Mar de Frades

Albarino Brut NV, Mar de Frades

Galicia, SpainVintage: NV

The first of its kind, a sparkling Albarino.  Mar de Frades lies in the heartland of Rias Baixas. This is the truest expression of the terroir, nestled upon the Galician coast where the seawater washes up on the shore finds its way through the breeze onto the skins of Albarino grapes giving its notorious salinity.

In the glass, this wine is lemon/golden in colour with a fine persistent bead of bubbles.  The nose is expressive and complex with white fruits, eucalyptus, almond and toast as well as that classic Albarino trait of seawater.  In the mouth, it is full, creamy and deliciously cool.  The Albarino salinity is again in full force with those white fruits and toasty notes leaving you wanting more.  Ideal as an aperitif or with starters like smoked salmon, scallops or oysters.

The label has a thermosensitive logo so that when the wine is chilled at the right serving temperature, a blue galleon(boat) appears and disappears when it is too warm for consumption.

Description

Mar de Frades, the Spanish winery, was established in 1987, to bring out the best of the premium white-wine making potential of the Salnes Valley.  Mar de Frades represents the deeply rooted traditions of the historic home of the Albariño varietal: Val do Salnés.

Val do Salnés is where the story of mono-varietal Albariño wines began, and where the most sophisticated white wines from Spain are made, characterized by their freshness and aromatic intensity.

Mar de Frades is in a privileged location: the Arousa estuary overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Mar de Frades means Sea of the Friars in Galician language and is also the name of a place on the Arousa estuary near the mouth of the Umia river. History has it that pilgrims used to disembark at Mar de Frades on their route to the Camino de Santiago.

The winery’s modern design resembles a sailboat. It is an innovative winery, whose iconic blue bottle symbolizes the modernity of Atlantic wines.

The idea is to create a sparkling wine that is fresh, aromatic and has the same signature salinity as its still wine counterparts. As you would expect, grapes are hand-harvested and meticulously sorted. Only the first 40% of free-run juice was used and fermented spontaneously. The base wine is then bottled and aged on its lees just long enough to give it some welcome autolytic character and creaminess, but without overpowering the primary fruit character and signature salinity.
