  • 2022 ‘Elysium’ Black Muscat, Quady – 375ml Dessert Wine, Port & Dessert Wine

    2022 ‘Elysium’ Black Muscat, Quady – 375ml

    £1500

Elysium is a brilliant crimson-purple colour with aromas of ripe berries, rose petals, strawberries and lychees. The vibrant acidity balances beautifully with the sweetness of this wine, making it very refreshing.    This wine is amazing with Chocolate desserts and cheese.   This really is one of those wow wines and always elicits the same response – wow!

This wine also has a great birth story – In 1983 a nearby grower brought Andrew Quady some Black Muscat grapes that were previously destined for sacramental wine at a local church. When the church ceased operations, the grower was left with truckloads of perfectly ripe grapes. Upon hearing that newcomer Quady had some success with Orange Muscat, he knocked on Quady’s door and the rest as they say, is history.

    £1550

Vibrantly coloured, Essencia delivers luscious sweet oranges and apricots on the palate with bittersweet orange marmalade notes which balance well with the fresh citrussy finish.

In 1980 Andrew Quady discovered a parcel of underused Orange Muscat grapes in Reedley, California, which led him to make a wine that celebrated the intense aromas and spicy fruit flavours of the grapes. In Italy, the variety is known as Moscato Fior d’Arancio: Orange Blossom Muscat.

  • 2017 ‘Maggio’ Old Vines Petite Sirah, Oak Ridge Winery Red Wine

2017 ‘Maggio’ Old Vines Petite Sirah, Oak Ridge Winery

    £1695

This richly coloured wine offers opulent notes of dark berried fruit and blueberry, with nuances of black pepper, fine cocoa and vanilla. Showing lovely balance, the ripe fruit is enveloped in elegant tannins through to a lingering finish.

The winemaking philosophy at Oak Ridge honours the importance of finding balance between the land and the makers, beginning first with growing quality grapes. Maggio has become part of the Lodi Rules initiative, which guides sustainable farming practices. Created by farmers it was initially launched as a grassroots educational integrated pest management programme in 1992. Recognising the importance of the ecosystem and biodiversity in the vineyard, it includes pest management initiatives, such as introducing natural predators, which minimises the risks to birds, bees, water and people. Water is carefully managed to ensure efficiency and waste is limited. The soils are treated with organic matter and are cultivated to maximise water penetration to sustain the vine’s roots. As a result the grapes are concentrated with flavour, which translates into fruit-forward, expressive wines.

Alvin’s father added to the acreage after he returned from WWII. The Syrah and Grenache were planted by Alvin using the same time-honoured techniques and sustainable approach and they add layers of depth, complexity and balance to the blend. Wonderwall wines are made with grapes grown in extreme, coastal locations and this stunning, approachable Syrah from winemaker Andrew Jones of Field Recordings is for all those lovers of the Rhone Valley classics, Crozes-Hermitage, Cornas or Saint-Joseph.

In the glass, the wine has the prettiest deep purple you will ever see, almost worthy of its own Farrow and Ball colour! Victoria plums, coffee bean, grilled meats, and some thyme and tapenade to add to the lovely plush, rounded palate. The finish is lifted and lingering and blueberry dominant.  It’s a lovely, supple expression of the grape.

As a vine nursery fieldman, Andrew Jones has spent many hours exploring vineyards, planning, planting, and chatting with farmers all over the Central Coast. He began spotting more and more interesting and overlooked vineyards – often rocky, wilder sites located closer to the Pacific, farmed mindfully by clients who have become friends over many years.  This Syrah is sourced from three such vineyards, Zabala in Arroyo Seco AVA, Hinterland in Paso Robles AVA, and Stolo in the tiny coastal community of Cambria.
