  2021 Riesling, Skillogalee

  The grapes for this dry Riesling are grown on low-yielding vines, along the contours on the highest slopes of the Skillogalee Estate at about 500 metres above sea level.

  In the glass the nose has a perfumed lift of jasmine, orange blossom spice and lemon zest. The palate is full-flavoured with excellent fruit concentration and texture. Flavours of lemon, lime zest and pith prevail, with hints of citrus spice and succulent, juicy acidity emerging thereafter. Structurally, this wine has impressive length, a lively natural acid backbone and a mouth-wateringly powerful finish.

  Drink now with fish, seafood or white meat dishes, or cellar for 5 years or more.

  With cool and dry weather, the 2021 vintage in the Clare Valley produced lovely fruit with excellent varietal character and natural acidity. The cool growing season was preceded by late-winter and early-spring rains which allowed for good spring growth on the vines. This was followed by below average rainfall and dry conditions for the remainder of the season, resulting in a vintage that produced beautiful and classic Clare wines with smaller bunches and grapes therefore reducing Riesling yield.

  In the glass this lovely ageing Riesling has intense lime and citrus aromas that dominate the nose with green apple, orange rind and talc also chiming in. Richly textured mouthfeel with concentrated lemon and lime flavours flooding the mouth. Underlying orange rind, talc and mineral characters follow on. Finishes dry with vibrant crisp acidity and a long powerful aftertaste of lime, citrus, orange rind, talc and spice.

  Owned by actor Sam Neill – of Jurassic Park, The Piano and Peaky Blinders fame – Two Paddocks is a fabulous winery in Central Otago that produces outstanding Pinot Noir and Riesling.

  Featuring the Proprietor’s Grandfather, Sydney Neill – Wine Merchant, on the label, Picnic Riesling is described by the winery as ‘our perennial favourite and a wonderful introduction to the pleasure of Central Otago Riesling.   This 2013 is a very well-made Riesling with a succulent mouthfeel, lovely mineral tones and a touch of honey and aged Riesling characters.   The flavours go on forever and the finish is mouthwatering making a second sip happen very quickly!

  BinD674 otherwise known as the 2017 HRB Riesling is made from fruit sourced from the Clare Valley and Tasmania. Brilliant water like colour with a slight tinge of green around the outskirts. Elevated lime juice and orange rind aromas interplay with citrusy talc like characters, green apple and steely mineral notes. Unfolding across the palate are intense lime and citrus flavours backed by a steely mineral infused core. Subtle orange rind and crunchy green apple elements are also apparent.   2015 The Dry Dam Riesling, d’Arenberg

  The 2015 Dry Dam Riesling is named after a neighbouring farmers dam that year after year was either dry or didn’t hold water.

  Jasmine and orange blossom, along with lemon and lime characters leap from the glass. The sugar-acid balance from this fine vintage is impeccable. While both are present, they manage to meld together creating a mouth-watering yet supple sherbet character, which finishes dry and mineral, not cloying in the slightest.

  A pleasure to drink right now, this wine will evolve elegantly for many years to come.

  2020 Riesling Spitzer Federspiel, Weingut Johann Donabaum

  An enchanting wine delivering distinctive aromas of peach and apricot. Crisp, with pure varietal character echoed on the palate, this refreshing wine has an excellent structure and a lively finish. Lovely Riesling expression.

  The grapes come from the Spitz vineyard in Western Wachau. The vines are grown on steep hillside terraces which make up several vineyards in the Spitzer Graben. The vines are planted with a south western orientation. Cooling breezes help to keep the climate temperate. The soils are very sandy and have high heat retention properties. The soil’s composition is the result of weathering of the local rocks and it is dominated by pegmatite and calc-silicate gneisses, which have low water retention and help to impart structure to the resulting wine.

  2015 The Dry Dam Riesling, d’Arenberg

  The Dry Dam Riesling 2020 has a delightfully lifted nose, loaded with lemons, limes, jasmine and Granny Smith. The palate displays a wonderful balance between acid and sweetness, giving that Dry Dam hallmark of sherbet-like character. Full of flavour yet pristine and refined. Drinks perfectly well young but promises to age well, developing toasty, marmalade notes for beyond a decade.

  The Name. : In 1992 d’Arenberg’s neighbours built a dam that remained empty, as it was a dry winter. The next year it rained but the dam was jinxed and didn’t hold water. A dry dam was bad news for d’Arenberg’s neighbouring farmers but promises good results for their old, dry-grown, low-yielding vines.

  2020 Riesling ‘Single Vineyard McKay’s, Jim Barry

  JThis Riesling was sourced from the McKay’s vineyard in Watervale. South or east-facing slopes are best suited for Riesling as they are shielded from the hot northerly winds that can occur during summer and also receive the cooler morning sun. The soil in the McKay’s vineyard is clay over limestone, which is free draining. The Clare valley climate is continental with a high diurnal temperature difference with clear skies. The cool nights lead to the preservation of crisp natural acidity and delicate flavours.

  The wine displays minerality on the nose, with characters of crunchy green apples and wet slate. A firm acid line drives through the palate with lime, citrus and a mineral finish. It has a lush silky flow and a calming finish.

  2021 Laissez Faire Riesling, Larry Cherubino

  The 2021 Laissez-Faire Riesling from Larry Cherubino is a truly delicious example of Riesling wine. This is a completely dry white wine with spectacular intensity and a bouquet reminiscent of red apple and white peach with minerally notes in the background.  White stone fruit flavours are persistent on the pallet, there is a subtle texture with tight knot acidity lingering in the background which provides length and persistence.

  Laissez-Faire means “let it be” and this reflects the hands-off approach that winemaker Larry Cherubino employs.  He has learnt from organics, bio-dynamics and natural wine practices, but is not dictated by one school of thought. Larrys says ‘ We don’t subscribe to dogma. You could call them natural wines, but we like to think of them as post-natural wines.  We believe in healthy and sustainable vineyard practices and winemaking transparency with as little as possible between the vine and finished wine‘

  In the Laissez-Faire wines, there’s no added tannin, or acid, or animal fining products. There is zero sulfur used throughout the winemaking and only a minimal amount at bottling. They are using alternate varieties and blends to make naturally balanced wines.   From vine to bottle, the wine takes its course, hands-free.  The wines are also vegan friendly.

  2013 Watervale Riesling, Mount Horrocks

  In the glass, this wine is a beguiling light straw green colour with a delicately fragrant floral orange blossom note.  As it opens up green apples, spice, a little pear and ginger waft out and avail the senses.  On the palate, it is bright and lively with juicy fruits wrapped in taught mineral acidity. It feels all silky-slippery in the mouth, such is the appealing texture and weight of this racy, dry Riesling that it can be cellared with the utmost confidence for 10-15 years.   In the glass, it has a brilliant water-like colour with a faint greenish tinge around the edges and watery hue. The nose displays zesty lemon and lime aromas infused with mineral and a hint of talc. Crisp with crunchy acidity and excellent concentration the palate possesses mouth-filling flavours of lemon and lime followed by some fresh green apple, a touch of orange rind and mineral with a snappy finish.   Dry and aromatic, with pithy grapefruit, chalk and lime zest, this is a blend of 55% Riesling, 25% Pinot Gris and 20% Sylvaner. Careful blending and attention to detail has taken this textural, Alsatian inspired blend to a wonderful place.  One for the Riesling lovers, but with a little more breadth, a lusher mouthfeel and spice.

  Heralded as “one of Beechworth’s rising stars, husband and wife team Tessa and Jeremy Schmolzer Brown purchased a 20ha block of prime cleared land just south of Beechworth, complete with lake and abandoned goldmine back in 2013.

  The Master’s wines are the top tier of Peter Lehmann’s original classic Barossa varietals, made for the long haul and released with bottle age to capture their full potential. These wines are named after a person or event that has played an intrinsic role in the Peter Lehmann story.

  Chief Winemaker, Andrew Wigan, was mentored by Peter Lehmann and was at his side when the winery was founded in 1979. He has had a hand in every Peter Lehmann wine since.

  From the shallow rocky soils of the Eden Valley is one of the great Riesling sites of the world, the Wigan Riesling has become one of Australia’s most celebrated wines having been named ‘Best Riesling in the World’ by International Wine and Spirit Competition six times since 1991, and being awarded over 80 trophies and countless medals since its inaugural vintage as ‘Wigan’ in 2003 (previously Reserve Riesling). A mature wine with remarkable youth on the palate, Wigan proves Peter Lehmann’s belief that Riesling is indeed the noblest of white varieties.

  This 2011 Wigan Riesling is another stunning wine – vibrant lemon in colour with a green tinge. Wigan Riesling displays the classic Eden Valley lime juice characters, with layers of honeyed bottle age character already showing through. Drinking wonderfully and has developed into one of the great ‘Wigan’ Rieslings.
