This is the 14th cuvee of this Californian version of a high-class Cotes du Rhone made by Morgan Twain-Peterson MW. Bedrock has been making stunning small-production wines from some of California’s oldest vineyards since 2007, so some seriously old vine fruit ends up in this blend. Shebang! is a blend of Zinfandel, Carignan, Alicante Bouchet, Syrah and Barbera fermented with native yeasts and aged in primarily neutral barrels (15% in new French oak). Each grape variety is vinified separately and added to a multi-vintage Solera. Each year he tops it up with new wines after drawing off the wine to be bottled.

This is surely one of the reasons that this 2017 Crozes-Hermitage is such an elegant, sumptuous and pure expression of Syrah. It is almost black in colour, offering intense aromas of red fruits with savoury hints of black olives. Spicy peppery notes come through on the silky palate.

2017 Zero Manipulation ‘Tollini Vineyard’, Peterson Winery

Zero Manipulation is the winemaking philosophy that is employed on all Peterson wines, using the gentlest winemaking techniques possible to maximise flavours, aromas and the original essence of the grapes from the given vineyard and vintage.
The Tollini Vineyard is located in Mendocino County’s Redwood Valley and has been in the Tollini family for three generations; now in the hands of Alvin Tollini. The Zero Manipulation Blend is made up of predominantly Carignan, where the vines are traditionally head trained and dry farmed. The blocks were originally planted by Alvin Tollini’s father and grandfather and old-vine, low yielding Carignan remains from the original plantings and produces concentrated, flavoursome fruit. Alvin’s father added to the acreage after he returned from WWII. The Syrah and Grenache were planted by Alvin using the same time-honoured techniques and sustainable approach and they add layers of depth, complexity and balance to the blend. The vines are planted on southwest facing benches in the Redwood Valley and are cultivated with a meticulously sustainable approach.

£2200Add to BasketAromas of red earth, ground black spice and dark berries lead to a palate of fine, silky tannins. Juicy fruit flavours of blueberry and dark cherry combine with undertones of spice.
The fruit was selected and hand-picked from sites across Frankland River, Western Australia. The vines were planted in 1997 to a density of 1,650 vines per hectare and have a northern orientation, which maximises the exposure to the sun. Careful irrigation ensures the vines are healthy. The soils are granite, which are known for their heat retention properties and for promoting the even ripening of the berries.

2019 ‘The Joshua’ Grenache, Mataro & Shiraz, Teusner
£2200Add to BasketJoshua is the wine that started Teusner as a wine producer. Kym Teusner and his business partner Mick Page were in a pub sipping a few beers. They overheard a couple of old growers having a conversation about the low, low prices being paid for their old vine Grenache…to the point they were going to rip out the vines and plant Chardonnay! Horrified they hatched a rescue plan, scrambling together some cash, the grapes found a new home and the vines stayed in the ground where they belonged and Teusner Wines was born.
Named after Mick’s first son, Joshua is a blend of Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz. Made from 100-year-old vines it has a delicious mix of light and dark fresh ripe berried fruits, cured meats and lifted spice on the nose that sets you up for a mouthful of savoury and gamey flavour in the mouth. Kept away from oak and released young it showcases the juicy, spicy, flavoursome red wines of the Barossa.

2019 Laissez Faire Syrah, Larry Cherubino
£2250Add to BasketLaissez-Faire means “let it be” and this reflects the hands-off approach that winemaker Larry Cherubino uses when making this striking Syrah. A bouquet of black cherries is enveloped in subtle mineral nuances and supporting oak spice. Red flowery fruit flavours dominate, with subtle slate-like minerality following through onto the elegant palate, all framed by fine tannins through to a long finish.
While inspiration has been taken from organics, biodynamics and natural winemaking practices, the Laissez Faire range could be called ‘natural wines’; Larry Cherubino likes to think of them as “post-natural” wines. Believing in healthy and sustainable vineyard practices, Larry grows all his own grapes and can account for their provenance and natural status. While copper is allowed in organic viticulture, minimal copper treatments are used here. The grapes for this wine are grown in the subregions of Frankland River and Porongurup, in the Great Southern, which are considered to be two of the most distinctive viticulture areas in Australia.

2019 ‘Altitude 1100’, Doña Paula
£2295Add to BasketThis exceptional blend of Malbec, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon is made grapes picked at an altitude of 1,100 metres above sea level hence the name ‘Altitude 1100’. It is one of a trio of Dona Paula wines focusing on the altitude of unique and exceptional vineyards. The other 2 being ‘Altitude 969’ and ‘Altitude 1350’. All three are exceptional and available from us.
In the glass the ‘Altitude 1100’ has floral aromas of violet and rosehip from the Malbec that are complemented by spicy notes, good volume and silky tannins from the Syrah, while the Cabernet Sauvignon imparts a great structure in this complex and balanced wine.
‘Altitude 1100’ comes from three blocks in the Los Indios vineyard, which is located in El Cepillo, San Carlos, in the Uco Valley, at 1,100 metres above sea level. The climate is characterised by warm days and cold nights; the average temperature variation is 16 °C, which encourages a long ripening period in which the grapes slowly build aromatic complexity and the fruit is balanced by refreshing acidity. The average annual rainfall reaches 300 millimetres. The sandy loam soil offers good drainage and encourages low fertility; in some sectors, there are gravel and stone deposits of colluvial origin, bound by a thick, 70 centimetre-deep layer of calcium carbonate known as black caliche. Black caliche appears in very old soils, where the vine vigour is reduced so the grapes produced have concentrated flavours. At Doña Paula, the vineyards have always been managed using sustainable agricultural practices.

£2350Add to BasketWonderwall wines are made with grapes grown in extreme, coastal locations and this stunning, approachable Syrah from winemaker Andrew Jones of Field Recordings is for all those lovers of the Rhone Valley classics, Crozes-Hermitage, Cornas or Saint-Joseph.
In the glass, the wine has the prettiest deep purple you will ever see, almost worthy of its own Farrow and Ball colour! Victoria plums, coffee bean, grilled meats, and some thyme and tapenade to add to the lovely plush, rounded palate. The finish is lifted and lingering and blueberry dominant. It’s a lovely, supple expression of the grape.
As a vine nursery fieldman, Andrew Jones has spent many hours exploring vineyards, planning, planting, and chatting with farmers all over the Central Coast. He began spotting more and more interesting and overlooked vineyards – often rocky, wilder sites located closer to the Pacific, farmed mindfully by clients who have become friends over many years. This Syrah is sourced from three such vineyards, Zabala in Arroyo Seco AVA, Hinterland in Paso Robles AVA, and Stolo in the tiny coastal community of Cambria.

2020 `Wanderer’s Heart` Cape Red Blend, Thorne & Daughters
£2395Add to BasketThis wine from Thorne & Daughters is an intense and complex red blend from Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah carefully sourced from prime vineyard sites across the Western Cape. On the nose, well-defined aromas of red cherry and violet combine with spicy notes of cinnamon and cardamom to burst from the glass. On the palate, the wine is poised with supple tannins and juicy acidity, leading to a multi-layered and moreish finish.
The ‘Wanderer’s Heart’ is made from a blend of grapes from carefully selected growers across the Western Cape. The Grenache is sourced from dry-farmed vineyards on the Paardeberg Mountain in the Swartland which has a combination of clay and granite soils. The Mourvèdre is the fruit of 12-year-old vines planted on clay/gravel soils in Bot River. The Syrah also comes from Bot River from 12-year-old vines planted on shale. The vineyards are all farmed sustainably and harvesting is done by hand.

2019 Syrah ‘TH’, Undurraga
£2450Add to BasketCool climate Syrah with spicy, peppery aromas and notes of fresh wild herbs and subtle tar surround a core of fresh raspberries and wild berries. Mineral on the palate, with a tense tannin structure and a vibrant acidity that gives freshness and identity to the wine.
Located to the west of the coastal mountain range, the Leyda Valley has gently rolling hills, exposing the vines to varying levels of sunlight and drainage profiles. The soils are developed from granite rock on the coastal batholith formed 200 million years ago in the Jurassic period. For this wine, the grapes were selected from a small plot of Syrah grown in finely textured soils. The top layer is shallow loamy clay with poor fertility, followed by a sedimentary ‘crack’ clay profile. The subsoil is decomposed granite rock with a diverse mineral structure. The plot is densely planted with 10,000 vines per hectare of French Clones 174 and 470 on a north-facing slope exposed to the sun. The yield was two kilograms per plant, which favours the concentration necessary to achieve a wine with great richness.

2018 Shiraz, Groot Constantia
£2475Add to BasketGroot Constantia is the oldest wine estate in South Africa and has a remarkable history including having King Louis Philippe of France as there best customer! Today they make exceptional wines in a sub-region of the Western cape called Constantia which is near Cape Town.
The cool ripening conditions of 2018 resulted in layers of complexity and thus this 2018 Shiraz shows white pepper, coriander and liquorice on the nose, while time in the glass unveils the savoury side of the wine. The spicy flavours are supported by subtle use of oak on the palate and the tasting experience is completed by a fine tannin structure.
The vineyards that the grapes come from for this wine are tucked in the steep valley on the eastern side of Table Mountain. The climate is Mediterranean with cooling breezes from the Atlantic Ocean encouraging balance and complexity in the grapes, this combined with the cool southern slopes and deep mountain soils provide the ideal setting for the making of these top quality wines.

2019 Domaine Gauby`Calcinaires` Rouge IGP Cotes Catalanes

This 2019 `Calcinaires` Rouge is bright with red and black fruit, notes of wild rosemary and thyme mingle with spice and dark cherry fruit on the palate, balanced by bright acidity and ripe supple tannins. Worth decanting beforehand to allow to fully open and express.
