  • ‘Alta No. 10’ Ten-Year-Old Tawny Port, Quinta da Pedra AltaFortified, Port, Port & Dessert Wine

‘Alta No. 10’ Ten-Year-Old Tawny Port, Quinta da Pedra Alta

    £2600

Alta No.10 is an elegant, luscious, complex Tawny Port made in traditional granite lagars and aged in old casks.

This is the first Ten-Year-Old produced on the estate and is a fitting tribute to the positive impact João has had on the estate since he started in 2009.

As with all ports, blending is the key, and Pedra Alta uses a variety of aged parcels with different levels of sweetness and acidity, including a small proportion of some really old barrels (at least 40 years old). The aim is to deliver an elegant, complex Ten-Year-Old Tawny style where the sweetness takes a back seat, and the Pedra Alta acidity provides the focus.

Serve slightly chilled as an aperitif and as a perfect accompaniment to chocolate desserts or strong cheese.

Perfect to drink now, but will gain further complexity over the next 20+ years.

  • Starboard Batch 88, QuadyPort & Dessert Wine

    Starboard Batch 88, Quady

    £2695

Batch 88 is an easy drinking port-style wine with ripe fruit and nutty elements, that place it somewhere between a ruby port and a tawny port. It is warm, smooth and rich with a chocolate raisin character. Delightfully warming by itself, Batch 88 also pairs well with cheeses or with chocolates.

Why does Quady call its “port” Starboard?

Port is a geographic term for fortified wines that come from the Douro River Valley in Portugal. Starboard, the nautical term for right, (as opposed to port – left) is unique to our place, the San Joaquin Valley, California, on the other side of the world from Portugal.

Quady use the same grape varieties and similar methods as in the Douro, but their climate is warmer and the soils different. Instead of 140 proof fortifying brandy, they use a neutral grape spirit of 190 proof. 60 gallon barrels are used instead of the 140 gallon pipes used in Portugal. Starboard matures earlier and has a riper more voluptuous flavour.

The grapes in Batch 88 are primarily Tinta Roriz. The vineyard is managed to give loose bunches and a small crop. Several different vintages aged an average of five years are used in the blend. In the port business this type of blend is called “Vintage Character.” The first year this wine was made in this style was 1988, thus the nickname Batch 88.

  • Pedro Ximénez San Emilio Solera Familiar, Bodegas LustauDessert Wine, Fortified, Port & Dessert Wine

Pedro Ximénez San Emilio Solera Familiar, Bodegas Lustau

    £2850

The sherries of Lustau are iconic and represent the best of the best.   This Pedro Ximenez is one of our favourites.

To make this wine Pedro Ximénez grapes are laid out in the sun after picking until they are practically raisins. After that the fermentation starts slowly and is halted to maintain all the natural sugars.  The resulting wine ages for 12 years in contact with the air in Jerez de la Frontera.

In the glass it has a deep mahogany colour with iodine hues on the rim. The wine’s tears reflect its great density. Aromas of dried fruit (prunes, apricots, figs). The palate is very sweet, velvety and soft whistle being intense and flavoursome, An extremely long finish where sweet and roasted coffee flavours return.

Serve at 10 – 12oC.  Serve with rich desserts, cakes and pastries, or pour over vanilla ice cream. Perfect companion to for strong blue cheeses. Ideal as a digestive.
