  • 2021 ‘Origin’ Pinot Noir, Saint Clair Wine Republic Heros Red Wine

2021 ‘Origin’ Pinot Noir, Saint Clair

    £2075

Dark garnet colour in the glass with aromas layered with blueberry and blackcurrant fruits, intermingled with dark chocolate aromas. The palate is concentrated and fruit-driven with ripe red berries and dark fruits filling the senses. Delicate tannin and savoury oak notes to finish. Well-matched with garlic and rosemary lamb rack with a side of fresh lettuce and pistachio salad.

Drinking beautifully now, this wine can be enjoyed young or with careful cellaring will mature into a more complex wine that can be enjoyed for the next three years.

The fruit is sourced from a number of specifically chosen low cropping vineyards from the Southern Valleys region of the Wairau Plain. The vines are grown in very clay-rich, vigour moderating soils. Each vineyard is closely monitored and tasted to determine when the flavours were at their optimum and harvested in the cool of the morning.

  • 2018 The Derelict Vineyard Grenache, d’Arenberg Wine Republic Heros Red Wine

2018 The Derelict Vineyard Grenache, d’Arenberg

    £2095

2018 was an exceptional year for Grenache in the McLaren Vale. An absolute abundance of fruit on the nose, with all the classics, blueberry, plum, liquorice, spice and earth. The palate too is full of presence. Juicy and generous but with a seam of crunchy tannin and lively acid that add structure and fresh punch to the wine. All of these big rich fruits are wrapped around a graphite almost ferrous like framework. Immediately drinkable but undoubtedly a Grenache built for time. If enjoying young be sure to decant or at a minimum allow it to breath in the glass. Your patience will reward you.

The name of the wine is inspired by the time in the 1980s and early 90s when Grenache was considered unfashionable, Chester acquired many old bush vine, overgrown and abandoned vineyards. These vineyards still have a slightly dishevelled appearance, but they are back producing very low yields of exceptional fruit.

  • 2019 The Feral Fox Pinot Noir, d’Arenberg Wine Republic Heros Red Wine

2019 The Feral Fox Pinot Noir, d’Arenberg

    £2095

Fabulous! This wine sings in the glass. Gently poached strawberry compote with twists of maraschino cherry. Given time in the glass will leave you wanting more. As it opens the palate offers touches of truffle, spice and forest floor adding layers of serious complexity. A bright acid backbone is a guarantee that this wine will develop with attitude and grace.   Classic Adelaide Hills Pinot Noir.

THE NAME: The feral foxes that inhabit the Adelaide Hills have developed an appetite for grapes and can often be found eating low hanging bunches during vintage. Chester says that he is nor bothered by this as these bushy-tailed critters act as crop thinners and enhance the quality of grapes that are too high for them to reach. It also has the secondary effect of providing a natural source of fertilisation when the laxative nature of the grapes take effect on the normally carnivorous foxes.

  • 2018 Dark Prince Nero d’Avola, Fox GordonRed Wine

2018 Dark Prince Nero d’Avola, Fox Gordon

    £2095

Opulent yet silky, this delicious wine reveals stunning aromas of deep fruits which are enhanced by notes of Sarsaparilla and lifted floral notes of red roses. Fine supple tannins and a hint of oak lead to a rich finish.

The Fox Gordon estate vineyards are located in the Adelaide Hills, overlooking McLaren Vale. Nestled in a natural amphitheatre, the vines are planted at an elevation of 380 metres above sea level, where cooling breezes from the ocean less than 18 kilometres away influences the microclimate. The vines are approximately 14 years old and are planted at the top of a hill at an altitude of 480 metres above sea level. It is a rocky site, which suits this very vigorous variety as the site has very little topsoil, slowing down the vigour.

  • 2019 The Riebke Shiraz, TeusnerRed Wine

    2019 The Riebke Shiraz, Teusner

    £2100

The Riebke Shiraz is dedicated to the Riebke Brothers who have vineyards located in the Northern Barossa sub-districts of Ebenezer, Moppa and Kalimna. Their family has been tending these vines for 5 generations. The brothers owned an old vine Grenache vineyard and were selling the fruit to some of the industry’s big boys, however, the low yields and low prices being paid meant that the brothers were running the vineyard at a loss.  In stepped winemaker, Kym Teusner, who together with his business partner, managed to scrape up enough cash to purchase about a quarter of the fruit – enough to stave off the brother’s plans of scrapping the vineyard. Since that day the Riebekes have become an integral supplier and Teusner gracefully acknowledges that the quality of this wine is really due to the brother’s viticultural talent, adding ‘Those guys have some of the best-kept vineyards in the Ebenezer district’.

In the glass it has a very deep midnight black core with a dark red black tinged hue. Unfurling from the glass are spicy dark plum and liquorice scents which meld into toasty vanillin cedar and peppered earth notes. Generous and juicy the medium to full bodied palate features ripe dark plum and liquorice fruits over spicy vanillin cedar, scorched earth and pepper characters. Polished tannins with a fleshy aftertaste that has plenty of pepper and spice to it.

  • 2015 Lunatico, Domaine Aubai MemaRed Wine

    2015 Lunatico, Domaine Aubai Mema

    £2100

We love old vine Grenache and this beauty is no exception!  Intense ruby colour in the glass with a focused, expressive nose with upfront red fruit and a subtle spice note. Full, ample, warm palate opening up to the fruit. The peppery nose dimension recurs on the finish. Lovely length that draws you into that second sip…

The Grenache for Lunatico comes from a small north-facing vineyard over half a century old. The grapes are hand-picked then sorted, though not destemmed, and vinified very gently over a 25 day period using only natural yeasts. The 24 months spent in 600-litre barrels gives Lunatico an ageing perspective of 10-15 years.

  • 2019 Rocim Indigena Organic, Herdade do RocimRed Wine

2019 Rocim Indigena Organic, Herdade do Rocim

    £2100

This deeply coloured and concentrated wine is made from 100% Alicante Bouschet, a once popular French red grape that has now found a home in the Alentejo region of Portugal.  It has a wonderful depth of dark berried fruit complemented by a characteristic eucalyptus note. Full bodied, with vibrant freshness that beautifully balances the intensity of fruit.

The estate is situated on the Vidigueira fault, a 30 mile long east-west facing escarpment which rises to 420 metres. The fault significantly influences the climate, trapping the cool, humid Atlantic winds, so despite its southern location it is one of the most temperate sub regions in the Alentejo. These cooling and humid influences descend at night, creating diurnal temperature differences of 15°C which extend the ripening period; with the warm days concentrating the flavours in the grapes, while balancing natural acidity is retained during the cool nights.

2017 Zero Manipulation ‘Tollini Vineyard’, Peterson Winery

    £2150

This blend of Carignan, Grenache, Syrah (73%,22% and 5%) has inviting aromas of wild red fruits, hints of spice and a rustic minerality which leads to luscious layers of raspberry, strawberry, floral notes and pomegranate, surrounded by a subtle structure and a touch of liquorice on the finish.  Zero Manipulation is the winemaking philosophy that is employed on all Peterson wines, using the gentlest winemaking techniques possible to maximise flavours, aromas and the original essence of the grapes from the given vineyard and vintage.

The Tollini Vineyard is located in Mendocino County’s Redwood Valley and has been in the Tollini family for three generations; now in the hands of Alvin Tollini. The Zero Manipulation Blend is made up of predominantly Carignan, where the vines are traditionally head trained and dry farmed. The blocks were originally planted by Alvin Tollini’s father and grandfather and old-vine, low yielding Carignan remains from the original plantings and produces concentrated, flavoursome fruit. Alvin’s father added to the acreage after he returned from WWII. The Syrah and Grenache were planted by Alvin using the same time-honoured techniques and sustainable approach and they add layers of depth, complexity and balance to the blend. The vines are planted on southwest facing benches in the Redwood Valley and are cultivated with a meticulously sustainable approach.
