  • 2008 Cuvée Symphonie Vouvray Brut, Sylvain GaudronChampagne & Sparkling Wine

2008 Cuvée Symphonie Vouvray Brut, Sylvain Gaudron

    £1950

The Gaudron family – fourth generation Gilles Gaudron is currently at the helm – have been making wine in Vernou since about 1890, farming a 27-hectare vineyard, two-thirds of it with an average age of 30 years.

This  2008 which offers a rich, complex and lanoline-centred style after spending extended time on the lees.

This three-generations Domaine is composed of 24 hectares of vines split up into 50 little parcels. All the vines of the Domain are planted on a limestone-clay soil which rests on a sub-layer of tuffeau, the elegant stone used to build the châteaux for which the region is so renowned.

There is a lovely rich yeasty, brioche note on the bouquet that we love. The wine was aged in barriques and gives a depth and weight to the wine that is delicious. A creaminess lingers on the finish. Just love it – move over Champagne.

  • Lobban Sparkling ShirazChampagne & Sparkling Wine, Sparkling Red

    Lobban Sparkling Shiraz

    £1995

This Spanish Sparkling Shiraz is handcrafted by Scottish winemaker Pamela Geddes.   The wine is made with 95% Shiraz and 5% Garnacha sourced exclusively from the Calatayud region, an arid area of Aragón, northeast pain, that has perfect growing conditions for these varieties. She handcrafts her wines using the Traditional Method, known locally as ‘Vino spumoso de Calidad’, ageing the wine on its lees for six years. When we say ‘handcrafted’, we really mean it – Pamela disgorges the sparkling wine herself, corks and crowns the bottles, and applies the distinctive tartan strip that adorns the bottle.

It is a fantastic wine, spicy, packed with black fruit, with a stream of liquid chocolate adding creaminess and balance.

    Fantastic with spicy food.

  • ‘Dubl’ Falanghina Brut Spumante, Feudi di San GregorioChampagne & Sparkling Wine

‘Dubl’ Falanghina Brut Spumante, Feudi di San Gregorio

    £1995

This magnificent 100% Falanghina sparkling wine is a collaboration between Pierpaolo Sirch of Feudi di San Gregorio and top Champagne producer Anselme Selosse, who collaborated in 2004 to form a “double act” combining the excellence of Anselme’s Champagne winemaking skill with Pierpaolo’s deep understanding of the uniqueness of the Irpinia terroir. The culmination of this was the launch of the “Dubl” range.

A fresh and aromatic wine with notes of crisp golden delicious apple, peach and floral hints of camomile, complemented by rounder notes of apricot. Captivating, fragrant and dynamic on the palate with a lively, persistent mousse and a long, pleasing finish.  The wine spent 18 months ageing on its fine lees adding texture and complexity.

The beautiful Feudi di San Gregorio vineyards are spread out over lush and gentle hills in Sorbo Serpico, approximately an hour from Naples and Mount Vesuvius. The region lies in the heart of the Southern Apennines, which is characterised by a continuous succession of mountains, hills and plains interspersed with rivers. The estate covers 250 hectares of vineyard divided into approximately 800 lots which are almost entirely devoted to native Campania vines. The vineyards are situated between 350 and 700 metres above sea level and the soils are volcanic, with a good percentage of clay. The climate is not the type of climate typically associated with southern Italy as the winters can be harsh and often snowy and the summers are breezy rather than scorching hot. The intense diurnal temperature variation, the winds that sweep through the vineyards and the exposure to the warming sun results in a unique combination set to express the full potential of the grapes.

  • Moxie Sparkling Shiraz, Dowie DooleChampagne & Sparkling Wine, Sparkling Red

    Moxie Sparkling Shiraz, Dowie Doole

    £2100

MOXIE [mok-see] noun: vigor; verve; pep; self confidence; force of character; determination or nerve.

MOXIE is a non-vintage Sparkling Shiraz – A blend of various vintages including a Shiraz base that contains vintages as far back as 1996 to give extra depth and richness. The Shiraz in the Moxie have been used like a solera system with a portion of the older material used in the blend to give the wine depth and wonderful richness on the palate. This base has then been blended with Shiraz from the 2017 vintage to add lift, palate weight and richness.

This is a quintessential Australian Sparkling Red wine best served cold. It is rich, dark and dangerously delicious and has a full-bodied, velvety palate exhibiting flavours of blackberry and cherry with hints of chocolate and spice. While rich, the wine is never cloying, finishing with vibrant acidity and some lovely drying tannins to offset the semi-sweetness of the wine.

Though rich, complex and delicious to drink now, if cellared carefully the Moxie Sparkling Shiraz will drink gracefully for 8-10 years.

NV Croser ‘Adelaide Hills’ Sparkling, Petaluma

    £2150

Petaluma Croser sparkling wine is a truly awesome wine and seriously good value, a blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, made by the Champagne method.

The Chardonnay offers nectarine, cashews and biscuity characters — the backbone of the Croser Non-Vintage palate — with the Pinot Noir providing a fine mousse and strawberry fruit lift. Incredibly bubbly, with a long-lasting dry finish.

As is the tradition with non-vintage Champagne, this wine is a blend of the current vintage Croser with reserve wine from several older vintages — with each vintage adding distinctive qualities to the final blend. Croser Non Vintage stays true to the ‘aperitif’ style of Vintage Croser, showcasing a rich, full blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from selected sites in the cool climate Piccadilly Valley and other parts of the Adelaide Hills.

Hand-picked fruit is whole bunch pressed or crushed and pressed, with the free-run juice then fermented using Petaluma’s specially selected yeast strain in barrique and tank. The tiraged sparkling wine is left to age on yeast lees for 12 months and disgorged on demand — this ensures the wine retains optimum freshness and vitality.

  • Blanc de Blanc MV, House of Arras Wine Republic Heros Champagne & Sparkling Wine

Blanc de Blanc MV, House of Arras

    £2295

This is the first new release from the House of Arras in ten Years! Crafted by Chief Sparkling Winemaker Ed Carr, from select parcels of Tasmanian fruit and careful use of oak, this is an amazing wine from a supremely talented winemaker.

This wine is a tribute to Chardonnay and sees a careful parcel selection of premium cool climate Chardonnay from vineyards in Piper’s River, the Derwent Valley, East Coast and Coal River Valleys. A significant portion spends time on oak before this wine undergoes secondary ferment in bottles and spends 30 months on lees giving remarkable balance and poise for a multi-vintage sparkling wine.

The palate expresses an elegant but powerful character, showcasing flavours of grapefruit pith, lemon curd, natural yoghurt and fresh sourdough. Balance is achieved at a low dosage which expresses the purity of Chardonnay with classic citrus and saline characters.   Drinking fabulously now but will cellar well for the next 7-10 years.

For winemaker Ed Carr the philosophy for Arras sparkling wines is simple, to create world-class sparkling wines.   Ed Carr is Australia’s most awarded sparkling winemaker with 34 years of experience in the Australian wine industry – 27 of these involved with sparkling wine production. He has long held the belief that Tasmania can, and should, produce exceptional sparkling wines equal to the world’s best. Over the past 20 years, Ed Carr has amassed more than 100 trophies in Australian wine shows including 21 consecutive “Best Sparkling White Wine of Show” trophies at capital city wine shows.

  • NV Brut Reserve, Lyme BayChampagne & Sparkling Wine, English & Welsh Sparkling Wine

    NV Brut Reserve, Lyme Bay

    £2395

Seyval Blanc grapes are used to create a bright, fruit-forward and elegant, yet approachable English sparkling wine. Lyme Bay sources its grapes from different vineyards and ferments each parcel separately in order to produce some of the most complex wines in England.  Secondary fermentation in bottle under the Traditional Method process provides structure to the mid-palate and detail to the body of the wine without overpowering the delicate crisp citrus fruit. Pronounced notes of lemon and Granny Smith apple stand out amongst a vibrant and delicate mousse with a clean finish.

www.jancisrobinson.com review: Distinctly golden – I wonder how long it’s been on the lees? Quince and daphne florals and a buttery lemon-cream richness on the nose and the palate. Wonderful zesty lime peel and orange oils, piquant in an unexpectedly weighty depth of clotted-cream-on-toast. Green apples and a dusting of cinnamon spice. Long, persistent, graceful balance. I did not expect something this classy from Seyval Blanc. Good Value 16.5/20

The vineyard sits on the undulating land over the white calcareous soils. These famous chalky soils are finely structured and more porous than other soil types, with the looser structure enabling the absorption of minerals by the vine. The chalky soils not only provide excellent drainage but also impart elegance and finesse to the resulting wine.
