Dessert Wine, Port & Dessert WineSauternes is the world’s most celebrated dessert wine and Doisy Védrines is one of the best. Despite lying next door to Premiers Crus Châteaux Climens and Coutet, it remains under the radar. This is their magnificent, affordable second wine.
Golden in colour, the nose shows caramelised citrus, orange marmalade and honeysuckle. Sweet, but not cloying, there are lovely botrytis flavours intermingled with orange and lime peel and fresh citrus acidity on the generous finish.
White WineGreat value ‘estate-level’ Pinot blanc (Weisser Burgunder) produced by the gifted Jürgen Hofmann. Complex nose of white flowers, pear and some lively spice with just a hint of stone fruit. Lovely and zesty palate, with a smooth soft texture and highlights of orchard fruit, apricot and just a few wisps of hay.

Marsanne is one of the world’s rarest grape varieties originating in the Northern Rhone & Hermitage regions of France it is grown in only 3 other countries, Australia, America & Switzerland. Tahbilk holds the largest and oldest single holding of the variety in the world.
This beautiful dessert wine is full of citrus and tropical fruit characters that are complemented by lush marmalade, nutty and honeysuckle notes on a richly opulent palate, refreshed by a mineral-like acidity. Delicious with stinky cheeses or summer puddings or just because you enjoy life on the sweet side!
This wine is named after the practice of cutting the canes, where the fruiting cane is detached from the vine. The bunches of grapes are left to hang prior to harvest, drying the fruit which concentrates the flavours and sugars, resulting in a luscious wine.
Red WineChateau Le Pey is made up of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot and comes from a vineyard area of 32 hectares. The soils here are clay and limestone and the average age of the vines is 20 years of age. The wine spends 12 months in oak of which 25% is new. This Château is situated just north of St-Estèphe.
This excellent value Bordeaux, opens in the glass with an appealing complex bouquet (ripe grapes, wood, and spices). On the palate, it is a full and well-balanced wine.
Sweet wineThis organic Monbazillac from Domaine de l’Ancienne Cure is a wonderfully rich sweet wine made from low yields of late-harvested, botrytised, Semillon (90%) and Muscadelle (10%). In the glass, it has a wonderful golden robe, barley sugar bouquet and complex dried fruit palate offset by fine acidity. It has a lovely tawny colour and is richly honeyed with complex notes of dried fruits, nuts and caramel with a heady orange blossom bouquet.
Traditionally, Monbazillac wine is served chilled before the main meal, often as an accompaniment to foie gras, but it makes an equally harmonious partner for fruit-based desserts or cheese, particularly blue cheese. Certified organic.
Red WineIntense aromatic notes of prune, bitter cherry, liquorice and warm spice are layered with delicate vanilla, coffee, chocolate and balsamic overtones. Full-bodied and balanced on the palate, with charmingly structured tannins and a bold yet elegant finish.
Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is produced from the Montepulciano variety, grown in the Abruzzo region, on Italy’s Adriatic coast. The Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC title was established in 1968, and covers 74 miles of the eastern Abruzzo coastline and spreads inland for approximately 20 miles. The vineyards are located on the undulating topography created by the Apennine Mountain range. The foothills create ideal mesoclimates, taking advantage of the 2,260 hours of average annual sunshine in the region.
White WineThe Trimbach’s have a purist vision. For three centuries and across 13 generations, the family has produced wines that are structured, long-lived, fruity, elegant and balanced: the celebrated Trimbach style. The family personally looks after each operation, from planting to harvests and from vinification to bottling. The wines are released after two years of cellar ageing, when they have the perfect balance of fruit and acidity.
Pale yellow with green reflections and rich concentrated aromas of white flower and apricot notes. Smooth, medium bodied with good fruit acidity. Pairs well with light meals such as salads, chicken, roast pork and seafood.
Red WineThis 2016 Shiraz/Viognier has a rather dark appearance with a vivid purple hue suggesting a complex dry red. The nose is particularly intense, with peppery spice, hints of fragrant flower and perfume aromas, plus nectarines, apricots, ginger and herbs from the small parcel of viognier that the Shiraz is co-fermented with. On the palate, the Shiraz is more dominant with sweeter fruit characters like blackberry, blueberry and boysenberry. The palate is rich and generous and soft silky tannins.
The Kookaburra is a native Australian bird famous for its distinctive laughing call, Chester’s young daughters named them “Laughing Magpies”. The Magpie plumage is black with a stripe of white feathers, representing McLaren Vale’s first ever blend combining the (black) Shiraz and its white partner, Viognier.
White WineTextured with spicy notes of fennel and toasty oak, through to a lovely, long and sustained finish
The vineyard is situated in the heart of the AOC Bouzeron in the Côte Chalonnaise. The east-facing plot is planted with an Aligoté strain called ‘Golden’, the vines are low yielding and produce exceptionally aromatic grapes. The climate is continental, with warm summers and cold winters and excellent diurnal temperature differences. The vineyard is cultivated using organic preparations and the use of chemical herbicides is strictly prohibited. The double Guyot trained vines are carefully managed between the spring and summer months to ensure optimal conditions for healthy, mature grapes at harvest time; with strict de-budding, leaf thinning and ploughing of the soil. The vines are grown in marly-chalk soils from the Jurassic period.
White WineOwned by actor Sam Neill – of Jurassic Park, The Piano and Peaky Blinders fame – Two Paddocks is a fabulous winery in Central Otago that produces outstanding Pinot Noir and Riesling.
Featuring the Proprietor’s Grandfather, Sydney Neill – Wine Merchant, on the label, Picnic Riesling is described by the winery as ‘our perennial favourite and a wonderful introduction to the pleasure of Central Otago Riesling. We think it is just as much a dinner wine as a luncheon – equally enjoyable at home outdoors, as at the Captain’s Table’.
This 2016 vintage is invitingly scented, with lively, youthful, lemon and green apple flavours, a hint of toasty, bottle-aged characters, and good concentration.
Red WineThis wine has a deep ruby red colour with violet highlights. The Refosco is characterised by intense notes of red berry fruit, cherries and spice box perfumes. With typically pleasant acidity and good tannins, the wine has a lovely structure and body.
The family now has 16 hectares of vineyard on the hill of Rocca Bernarda in the heart of the Colli Orientali DOC zone. The vineyards are beautifully tended by Graziano Specogna, and the quality of the fruit he brings to the winery is impeccable. As a result, he is keen to get as much flavour as possible from the grapes. Grapes for the Refosco are grown at 170 metres above sea level on the Eastern Friuli hills. The soil is loam and planting density is up to 3,500 plants per hectare. The vineyards were planted in 1968 and vines are Guyot trained.
Red WineIf you’re a lover of Beaujolais or Valpolicella then this Austrian Red made from 100% Zweigelt could be the one for you. In the UK we drink very little Austrian red wines and the Wine Republic team are guilty of that as well BUT we we do we are always pleasantly surprised by how good they can be, and this Zweigelt from Heinrich is one of those wines.
The vines of 2016 bequeathed grapes with extraordinary finesse. In the glass you will find a dance of cherry aromas from morello to wild. On the palate the tannins are fine but catchy. Despite all finesse and cool elegance, one attribute remains at the heart of this Zweigelt: pure juiciness. To allow this mouth- watering juiciness to flow unhindered, serve best at 15-16° C.
Red WineMatured in a combination of French and American oak hogsheads this classically styled Clare Valley Shiraz displays a totally opaque inky black crimson colour with dark crimson black tinged hue. Luscious ripe blackberry and liquorice top notes exude from the glass followed by some dark chocolate, vanillin oak and a faint hint of spearmint as an endnote. Rich and full-bodied the palate features a plush flavour profile of ripe blackberry, dark plum and liquorice over some spearmint and vanillin oak-like characters. Velvet smooth tannins with long blackberry, liquorice, spearmint and vanillin oak aftertaste.
The fruit for this wine comes from un-irrigated, hand-pruned and hand-picked vines grown at Skillogalee around 450m above sea level. The wine was vinified in open fermenters and then basket-pressed. No fining was needed. Malo-lactic (secondary) fermentation and maturation took place in predominantly French oak hogsheads for around 24 months, before the separate components were blended and bottled.
White Wine
A nose of white peach, lemon rind and jasmine with green melon, green apple and a crystalline, wet stone minerality adding freshness and focus. Crunchy, puckering acidity supports a full-bodied, mouth-coating palate with brioche and tart lemon curd leading to a long, pithy finish.
