Pithon-Paillé

2013 Anjou Blanc Côteaux des Treilles, Pithon-Paillé

Anjou, Loire, FranceVintage: 2013

Sommelier Wine Awards 2019 Gold

This is real WOW wine and if your a Chenin Blanc fan then one sip and you will fall in love.  It displays a breathtaking tension between the tangy acidity of the latitude, bright ‘mineralité’ of the site and luscious honeyed ripeness with fabulous complexity from its magnificent steep, southerly aspect.

This wine represents the tête de cuvée (top of the range) of Pithon-Paillé. The Coteau des Treilles vineyard located in Beaulieu-sur-Layon was abandoned after World War Two as it became to difficult to farm by tractor, which became all the rage in the post-war period. Seeing the potential of this great vineyard, the family purchased all 70 parcels from 25 different owners over the course of 3 1/2 years eventually achieving a monopole of this great Anjou site.

Description

The estate as it is known today was created in 2008 by Jo Pithon, Isabelle Pithon, Joseph Paillé and Wendy Paillé. Most of the estate’s vineyards were already in the Pithon family, but the grapes were not vinified and sold under the Pithon-Paillé name until 2008. Jo Pithon launched the original Domaine in 1978 guided by low interventionist principals, which were completely unheard of at the time. Focusing exclusively on organics and biodynamics in the vineyard and the cellar. They use nettle and chamomile treatments for the vines, as little copper as possible to fight mildew, ungulate manure buried in the vineyard for soil nutrition, natural yeasts and manual harvests are all essential contributors to the final quality of the wines. Yields are very low, machinery is almost never used in the vineyards. Vinifications are slow and left to exist at naturally occurring temperatures for the most part in large, neutral oak vats. Overall, the estate prides itself in treating the earth and their vines with respect, a process that will always result in healthier and more enjoyable wines.
