  • 2020 Old Vine Chenin Blanc, Kloof StreetWhite Wine

2020 Old Vine Chenin Blanc, Kloof Street

    £1595

Produced by Chris and Andrea Mullineux, the Kloof Street wines represent balance, freshness and superb value. They act as the perfect starting point for discovering Swartland’s wines. It is immediately evident in the glass that as much care goes into these wines as Mullineux’s Single Terroir Syrahs and Chenin Blancs.

This 2020 Chenin Blanc shows aromas of sun-ripened pears and wet granite on the nose. The palate has a vibrant acidity balanced by a soft, round texture and some pithy character. The wine has a fresh, mineral finish.

This wine is made from three sustainably farmed vineyard parcels from different parts of the Swartland. One parcel is sourced from 38-year-old old vine Chenin Blanc grown on the stony shale and schist-based soils of Kasteelberg, which retains heat well, ensuring even ripening and adds a mineral freshness to the wine. The other two parcels are from old, dry-farmed bush vine Chenin Blanc planted on the decomposed granite soils of the Paardeberg. The age of the vines, along with the dry conditions gives complex fruit with concentration of aroma and flavour.

  • 2018 Swartland Rouge, Kloof StreetRed Wine

    2018 Swartland Rouge, Kloof Street

The spicy perfumed nose has undertones of dark fruits. Each variety in the blend adds balance to the wine. Tinta Barocca brings tannin, Cinsault brings perfume, Carignan brings freshness, Grenache brings fruit character, and the Syrah ties it all together.

A blend of eight vineyard parcels, this wine is made from sustainably farmed fruit sourced from different parts of the Swartland. The vines are aged between 12 – 40 years. Two parcels of Syrah and one of Cinsault come from the stony shale and schist-based soils of Kasteelberg, which retain heat well and aid in the ripening of bold fruit. One parcel of dry-land, bush vine Syrah, one of Carignan, one of Grenache and a single parcel of gnarly, old, dry-farmed Tinta Barocca bush vines are all grown on the decomposed granite soil of the Paardeberg. This soil promotes the production of complex wines with lifted acidity. The final parcel is Mourvèdre grown on the rolling, iron-rich soils west of Malmesbury.

  • 2016 Chenin/Verdelho, MomentoWhite Wine

    2016 Chenin/Verdelho, Momento

    £2450
Marelise Niemann, winemaker and owner of Momento thinks that Chenin Blanc without Verdelho is like dancing without music.
Verdelho adds the zing and zest to the blend, giving it that extra twist of freshness, energy and rhythm. The Chenin blanc grapes come from 40-year-old, dry land farmed bush vines in the Swartland, and a 36-year-old vineyard from Bot River, called ‘Langbene’ (Long legs) – named after the unique and extremely long trunks of the vines.  The Verdelho grapes come from Voor-Paardeberg, grown in decomposed granite and clay as well as a vineyard in Bot River grown in Bokkeveld shale. The decomposed granite soils produce a rich, generous and broader palate, while the shale and clay soil from Bot River produces an austere, focused, and texture driven wine. A combination of these two regions, together with the Verdelho that adds the freshness, combine to create a well-balanced wine, both rich and generous and elegant and well-poised, with a mineral focus and bright acidity.

A nose of white peach, lemon rind and jasmine with green melon, green apple and a crystalline, wet stone minerality adding freshness and focus. Crunchy, puckering acidity supports a full-bodied, mouth-coating palate with brioche and tart lemon curd leading to a long, pithy finish.
