2014 Hill & Valley Riesling, Peter Lehmann

    £1650

The Hill & Valley wines showcase the great diversity of the regions surrounding the winery.  From the cooler Adelaide Hills to the elevated Eden Valley vineyards to those situated on the Barossa Valley floor, these ancient soils provide the base for great wines that speak of their origins.

Ok, so I will let you into a secret – at a wine dinner in 2015 with winemaker Andrew Wigan he told me to buy this wine as it had excellent ageing potential and he thought that it was going to be as good as the 2014 Wigan Riesling.  So we bought lots and are going to cellar some and sell some.   Currently drinking amazingly well and is a stunner for the price.   Intense citrus blossom and mineral/saline aromas jump from the glass. The palate shows great fruit purity with a alluring, mouthwatering finish.

  • 2015 Wigan Riesling, Peter Lehmann Wine Republic Heros White Wine

    2015 Wigan Riesling, Peter Lehmann

    £2350

From the shallow rocky soils of the Eden Valley, the Wigan Riesling has become one of Australia’s most celebrated wines.
Named after its winemaker, Andrew Wigan who until his recent retirement had a hand in every Peter Lehman vintage from its first in 1980, it is only released after 5 years from vintage to capture the wines full potential.
Andrew ‘Wigs’ Wigan revolutionised white winemaking and championed the Riesling grape and his eponymous wine has been named IWSC ‘Best Riesling in the World’ six times and accumulated more than 80 trophies since its inaugural vintage.

Delicate in colour with youthful highlights, and a soft aroma of lime and floral notes combined with toasty characters. The palate shows great fruit purity, with intense lime cordial character mixed with lemon rind and a fresh, crisp, dry finish. This is one of the classic Wigan Rieslings from an exceptional vintage, which will age well.

The 2015 vintage was sourced from Willam Hurn’s ‘Old House’ Vineyard, planted in 2002. The vineyard has all the hallmarks of a classic Eden Valley Riesling site – high altitude, soils composed of schist and shale and protected by afternoon sun due to it being nestled at the base of Menglers Hill.

  • 2011 Mesh Riesling, Grosset & Hill SmithWhite Wine

2011 Mesh Riesling, Grosset & Hill Smith

    £2450

High on the slopes of Eden Valley, bright yellow and blue buckets squat between rows of vines. Pickers pedantically divide Riesling grapes row by row – yellow, blue, yellow, blue, yellow, blue. Overseeing the process, tasting the grapes, stand two of Australia’s best-known Riesling makers, Clare Valley’s Jeffrey Grosset and Eden Valley’s Robert Hill-Smith.

Jeffrey and Robert work together each vintage before taking their chosen grapes – Jeffrey’s in the blue buckets and Robert’s in the yellow – and parting ways to crush and ferment the fruit at different locations. Debate follows, as the juice is assessed and the final, final, final blend is agreed upon. Each component, nearly identical at the start, undergoes a different conversion into wine, reflecting the personal differences of both men.

The wine is green and vibrant in appearance, with aromas of zesty lemon and grapefruit. An intense and generous palate, with lively citrus fruit and hints of talc. The wine finishes clean and dry with refreshing, long acidity. As is the case with all great Eden Valley Rieslings, mesh will age gracefully and reliably into a mature wine under the Stelvin closure.

  • 2018 Balthasar Shiraz, Grant BurgeRed Wine

    2018 Balthasar Shiraz, Grant Burge

    £2495

Named after one of the three wise men, Balthasar Shiraz is a benchmark Eden Valley Shiraz – 2018 is an extraordinary vintage of this renowned wine, immediately approachable yet can be cellared for up to 15 years.

In the glass, the aromas are dominated by black pepper, blueberry pie, mulberry and a hint of milk chocolate. There is some really interesting Christmas spice, allspice character which comes from the oak but is in no way dominating. This adds an extra layer of complexity to the nose. The palate is voluptuous and plush. Milk chocolate and coffee bean undertones, the wine has a midpalate that explodes right through the wine. A wave of clove-cinnamon-cedar oak mixed with a hint of fresh thyme and a full, round velvety finish.

2018 `Louis` Eden Valley Semillon, Henschke

    £2495

The 2018 vintage is considered a standout of this decade and this Semillon from Henschke is one of the best of the vintage.  In the glass it is a pale straw colour with lime green hues. Vibrant and lifted aromas of lemon rind, white currant, blossom and freshly cut grass are complemented by hints of lanolin and toast. The palate is pure, fine and elegant, offering layers of grilled lemon, kumquat and white stone fruit, supported by fine and balanced acidity and a clean finish. Semillon is fantastic young but will age superbly and this vintage exhibits great ageing potential.  Drink now to 2038+

In 1966, Cyril Henschke purchased 32 hectares of land on Cranes Range Road, two kilometres west of the Henschke Cellars at 500 metres above sea level. Here he planted the Henschke Eden Valley vineyard, predominantly with Riesling and Shiraz, on sandy loam soils over gravel and bedrock, with patches of clay. Other varieties were added over the years and a reserve selection from 50-year-old vines is used to make the ‘Louis’ Semillon. The wine is a tribute to Louis Edmund Henschke (1919-1990), the fourth-generation grower of the Hill of Grace vineyard.
