  • 2020 Calchaquí Valley Malbec, AmalayaRed Wine

    2020 Calchaquí Valley Malbec, Amalaya

From high-altitude vineyards in the Calchaquí Valley in Salta comes this intensely fruity wine, packed with flavours of red berries, raspberries and plums alongside hints of pepper and vanilla.

The estate’s vineyards are located in Cafayate in the very heart of the Calchaquí Valley, distinguished for being one of the highest wine regions in the world. The climate is very dry, with just 150 millimetres of rain in an average year and huge diurnal temperature fluctuations of around 20°C. The soils here are rocky, poor and sandy, so the roots of the vines are forced to dig deep to find the vital nutrients and water they need, which results in fruit with a hugely concentrated flavour.

Rodolfo Sadler took his first steps at making wine 27 years ago. His decision to become a winemaker was partly influenced by the family’s winemaking tradition and their passion for wine. As a little boy, he used to see his grandfather and father engaged in their winemaking tasks and always wished he could one day make his own wines of which to feel proud. The wines of Mascota Vineyards are the outcome of that dream. They have Rodolfo’s (”Opi”) personal imprint and are a testimony of his life story and the demonstration that when passion and enthusiasm are poured into what one does dreams will know no boundaries and international recognition will follow.

  • 2020 Estate Malbec, Doña PaulaRed Wine

    2020 Estate Malbec, Doña Paula

Intense violet in colour, this estate Malbec has enticing aromas of plums, black cherries, liquorice and spice, underpinned by subtle mineral and graphite notes. Great balance and freshness on the palate, with a deep concentration of ripe fruit, soft tannins and a persistent finish.

The grapes were sourced from two of Dona Paula’s best estate vineyards: Finca Alluvia in Gualtallary, situated at 1,350 metres above sea level and Finca Los Indios, located in Altamira, Uco Valley at an altitude of 1,100 metres. The soils are stony in the first location and sandy loam in the second, but both have a high calcareous content. This Malbec displays the characteristics of its cool climate origins and the wide diurnal temperature differences. The daily diurnal temperature range is excellent for the production of quality grapes; the nightly cooling-off extends the ripening period, allowing the grapes to develop rich varietal characteristics while retaining balancing acidity.

  • 2019 Apertura Malbec, MendelRed Wine

    2019 Apertura Malbec, Mendel

Mendel’s Apertura Malbec comes from the estate’s own vineyards located in an exceptional terroir of Luján de Cuyo with a view of the Sierras de Lunlunta. This Malbec, sourced from a vineyard planted in 1928, is managed embracing the same philosophy as in the plots destined for the top wines of Mendel. During maturation in barrels, the team at Mendel select very fruity wines, lighter in body and structure, looking for a very friendly, fresh, and easy-drinking wine but at the same time with great volume and round tannins.

Mendel Winery embodies the union of Roberto de la Mota with a nearly century-old Argentine family, whose sole objective is to produce wine of unquestionable, superior quality. Proprietor and longtime wine lover, Anabelle Sielecki, diligently tracked down the very best talent Argentina had to offer when seeking Mendel’s winemaker, and with utmost charm and perseverance, brought Roberto de la Mota on board.   Having worked for many years at the iconic Château Cheval Blanc in Saint-Émilion, Roberto de la Mota is one of Argentina’s most respected and experienced winemakers.

  • 2018 Mendoza Malbec, Kaiken UltraRed Wine

    2018 Mendoza Malbec, Kaiken Ultra

Grapes for this well structured and intense Malbec are sourced from three separate areas in the Uco Valley: Altamira, Vistaflores and Gualtallary. Each area brings its own distinct qualities and characteristics to the blend.

This wine is deep ruby red in colour, with purple tones and a wonderful display of rich aromas. The nose is enticing and spicy with floral notes. The palate is structured with soft tannins that lead to a finish that is fresh, complex and long, with notes of blueberry and blackberry.

The fruit for the Malbec Ultra was sourced from the Uco Valley. Variations in altitude and soil type result in grapes with distinct characteristics that give unique and highly complex wines. Grapes are sourced from three separate vineyards, at different altitudes: Vista Flores at 1,400 metres above sea level, Gualtallary at 1,300 metres above sea level, and Altamira at 1,100 metres above sea level. In spite of location and altitude variations, all three soil types are similar: alluvial soil with some sand and silt on top of very rocky layers that provide excellent drainage and ideal conditions to grow highly concentrated grapes.

  • 2020 Hey Malbec, Matias RiccitelliRed Wine

    2020 Hey Malbec, Matias Riccitelli

Another cracking Malbec from Matias Riccitelli, don’t be fooled by the fun label as this is a stylish, cool-climate Malbec delivering aromas of wild dark fruits, vanilla and chocolate. Complex and rich on the palate, with juicy black fruits, violet and black pepper enveloped in soft ripe tannins through to an opulent finish.

The grapes are grown in two locations: Perdriel and Galtallary. The vineyards at Perdriel are situated at an altitude of 980 metres above sea level, near the banks of the Mendoza River. This proximity to the river provides high levels of water retention in the vines, which are over 80 years old.  The region has a continental climate, with cool winters and mild summers, warm days and cooler nights. The soils are sandy silt and rocky, with very good drainage, which also promotes root growth. Irrigation is via the traditional technique of flooding. These attributes give the Malbecs great intensity, notable red and black fruit aromas, minerality and a very gentle structure.

The Galtallary vineyards sit at a higher altitude of 1,500 metres. A continental climate prevails, with cold winters, mild summers and good diurnal temperature differences. The soils are loamy clay and calcareous with a depth of 80cm above a rocky subsoil. This soil has good drainage and here the vineyards are drip irrigated. Hand pruning and a green harvest takes place in both vineyards to ensure the optimum exposure to the sunlight, while concentrating the flavours in the berries.
