  • 2018 ‘1753’ Syrah Sans Sulfites, Château de CampugetRed Wine

2018 ‘1753’ Syrah Sans Sulfites, Château de Campuget

    £1395

Classic Syrah nose with a very intense fruit-driven character, this classy wine shows notes of liquorice and violet complemented by a hint of dark chocolate. Rich black fruits are enveloped by a smooth and velvety texture through to a lovely fresh finish.

The grapes come from the Château’s vineyard, which is situated 15 kilometres south of Nîmes, near the village of Manduel in the heart of the ‘Appellation d’Origine Protégée’ (AOP) of the Costières de Nîmes. However, winemaker Frank-Lin Dalle has chosen to designate this wine as Vin de France to distinguish the distinctive style of this wine, which has been made without sulphites. The average age of the vines is approximately 25 years. The main characteristic of the vineyard is the soil, which is formed of ‘gress’, an accumulation of rounded pebbles that have been deposited by the overflowing Rhône River thousands of years ago. These pebbles allow the vines to grow in the best possible conditions and due to this natural soil filter; the vine’s roots can easily draw the necessary water for their growth. The vines also benefit from the Mediterranean sunshine, which bring the grapes to perfect maturity and allows them to be picked at maximum phenolic maturity in early September

  • 2018 L’ Insoumise, Domaine Aubai MemaRed Wine

2018 L’ Insoumise, Domaine Aubai Mema

    £1500

L’insoumise’ means ‘the rebel’ or ‘the indomitable one’. You see, if grape varieties were people, a Cabernet Sauvignon would be your favourite son-in-law, a Chardonnay might be the obliging shop assistant in Tiffany, while a Merlot would be that nice guy you meet at parties, a good mixer but you never remember his name. Carignan would be Carmen. Treat her right and there is no guarantee that she will return the favour. The most capricious of all the grape varieties, Carignan yields can vary by 50% from year to year. She drives you to distraction but she is well worth the wait!

Thankfully this one is excellent and rewards those fans of carignan greatly – a deep violet colour in the glass with an expansive kirsch-driven nose. In the mouth, there’s an explosion of flavours of red fruit and garrigue plants, with surprising length.
