2022 Faithful Hound, Mulderbosch

Western Cape, South AfricaVintage: 2022

Mulderbosch Vineyards is one of South Africa’s foremost wine producers. They use a restrained approach in the cellar to produce distinctive and characterful wines that represent the Stellenbosch terroir as well as limiting the use of herbicides, fungicides and pesticides when managing their vineyards.

Mulderbosch Faithful Hound celebrates the virtues of Bordeaux’s great tradition of blending.  It is made from five grape varieties; Cabernet Sauvignon & Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot.

A classically styled, poised and elegant wine with complex aromas of succulent sweet berries, brambly fruit and hints of perfumed cassis intertwined with herbal notes, spice, graphite and toffee butterscotch. The palate unfolds with an abundance of black fruit, vanilla and cinnamon, textured tannins and a beautifully nuanced finish.

Why we love it

A rich, complex wine that expresses old world-class and the generosity of fruit associated with the Cape

Description

When Mulderbosch founder, Larry Jacobs, bought the farm in 1989 the community referred to the property as “vuilplasie”, Afrikaans for “dirty little farm”. Shortly after, he partnered with Mike Dobrovic, known as the South African Mr Sauvignon Blanc, and together they cleaned up the property and planted the first vineyards. A (small) cellar was later built and the first set of wines were released: Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. The dream was to produce wine, but certainly not just any wine; they had to consistently reflect innovation, creativity and excellence.

Soon, Mulderbosch gained international traction with a growing list of accolades and awards.

Today  Mulderbosch Vineyards is one of South Africa’s foremost wine producers. As advocates of the Integrated Production of Wine (IPW) code, they manage their vineyards limiting the use of herbicides, fungicides and pesticides. They use a restrained approach in the cellar to produce distinctive and characterful wines that represent the Stellenbosch terroir. Chenin Blanc is the Cape’s signature variety and they have the largest planting of this variety in the world. In 1996, Mulderbosch was one of the very first producers in the Cape to ferment Chenin Blanc in barriques. The resultant wine garnered an avid following and Mulderbosch has since become synonymous with the variety.

The grapes were meticulously sorted prior to being destemmed. The fermentation process was initiated by naturally occurring yeast, and finished by a selected strain, added during the course of fermentation. Gentle extraction and long maceration time are the hallmarks of the winemaking style, followed by barrel maturation. The wine spent 18 months in French oak barriques, of which 30% were new and the remainder in second and third fill.
