  • 2019 ‘Bull Ant’ Cabernet Merlot, Lake BreezeRed Wine

2019 ‘Bull Ant’ Cabernet Merlot, Lake Breeze

    £1595

The playful label was inspired by the bullants which are known to harass vineyard workers.

The grapes for this wine were selected from old vines in the famous wine district of Langhorne Creek.  It has an amazing lifted bouquet of blackberries with a touch of mocha. The ageing in oak for 15 months has enhanced the mouth-feel of this wine, which is rich and smooth and offers a lovely soft finish with polished tannins.
Best consumed over the next 3-4 years and will drink even more dangerously paired with roast lamb.

  • 2017 Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, Berton VineyardRed Wine

2017 Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, Berton Vineyard

    £1895

The Reserve Coonawarra Cabernet has an impenetrable black colour with a vibrant garnet hue. The aromas are powerful and complex with a wealth of fruit ranging from ripe blackcurrant and blackberries with hints of nutmeg and cinnamon. The rich and harmonious palate displays abundant flavours of prune, plum jam and mint, underpinned by fine toasty French oak and defined by a soft yet dense tannin profile.

The grapes come from two parcels of fruit within the same vineyard, in the prized Terra Rossa region of Coonawarra. One block is on a slightly more elevated area of the vineyard, which produces more subtle fruit characters. The warm days are moderated by off-shore breezes and the rich red loam over free draining limestone soil is the foundation for the Coonawarra’s justified reputation for producing premium quality Cabernet Sauvignon grapes.

  • 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon, TahbilkRed Wine

    2019 Cabernet Sauvignon, Tahbilk

    £1950

In the glass, this wine offers up red to black currant scents infused with black olive and dried herbs followed by some earthy tobacco and stalky cedar notes. Medium-bodied the palate has an even spread of blackcurrant and liquorice fruit underscored by toasty cedar, earth, subtle black olive and spicy dried herbs. Fine-grained tannins with a lingering conclusion. Matured in large and small oak barrels

Tahbilk’s vineyards are grouped along the banks of the Goulburn River, a branch of it which flows through the estate. The vines are grown at around 134 metres elevation of gently undulating and flat terrain. The soils are sandy loam with ferric oxide content, which varies from very fine sand near the anabranch to denser loams on the plains. Tahbilk has Shiraz vineyards dating back from the 1860s to the 1990s. The oldest surviving block is the ‘1860 block’; planted on its own roots in sandy soils, which has made it impossible for phylloxera to colonise the vine roots.

2017 The Galvo Garage Cabernet Blend, d’Arenberg

    £1995

Made during an exceptionally balanced year. A lifted and perfumed nose displaying complex notes of violets, blackcurrant and ripe berries. The colour is quite rich, almost dark, suggesting a fuller-bodied flavour profile.  The palate is elegant, yet sings with ripe fruits, and is extremely juicy with deep richness and structure. This mix of pure fruit combines with fine oak tannins that lead to a lovely fragrant dark chocolate, minerally dry finish.

‘Garage wines’ is a term used to describe wines that are produced in the back sheds of French winemakers, who make small batch wines of the highest quality. Our galvanized, corrugated ‘garage’ was built in 1927 and still houses the traditional equipment used in the handcrafting of this wine.

2016 Basket Pressed The Cabernets, Skillogalee

    £2395

Matured in a combination of French and American oak hogsheads this classically styled Clare Valley Shiraz displays a totally opaque inky black crimson colour with dark crimson black tinged hue. Luscious ripe blackberry and liquorice top notes exude from the glass followed by some dark chocolate, vanillin oak and a faint hint of spearmint as an endnote. Rich and full-bodied the palate features a plush flavour profile of ripe blackberry, dark plum and liquorice over some spearmint and vanillin oak-like characters. Velvet smooth tannins with long blackberry, liquorice, spearmint and vanillin oak aftertaste.

The fruit for this wine comes from un-irrigated, hand-pruned and hand-picked vines grown at Skillogalee around 450m above sea level. The wine was vinified in open fermenters and then basket-pressed. No fining was needed. Malo-lactic (secondary) fermentation and maturation took place in predominantly French oak hogsheads for around 24 months, before the separate components were blended and bottled.

  • 2013 The Menzies Cabernet Sauvignon, YalumbaRed Wine

2013 The Menzies Cabernet Sauvignon, Yalumba

    £3900

Since 1987, the Hill-Smith family has counted itself amongst those fortunate enough to produce an estate-grown Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon. To own a vineyard upon that famous terra rossa soil over limestone is the holy grail of all Cabernet Sauvignon purists. Experimentation, innovation, minimalist intervention and small-batch winemaking has resulted in The Menzies’ reputation as one of the best wines of its type to emerge from the region – a wine of longevity, elegance and structure.

The 2013 Menzies bouquet leads with violet and lilac floral notes to the tangy counterpoint of seaspray and pepper. The palate is rich and powerful; red fruits and dark chocolate on a robust tannin framework. The finish is long, complex and well worth savouring.

    The Vineyard

The Menzies is in the heart of Coonawarra terra rossa country. The vineyard site is reasonably level, with the defining terroir difference coming from the soils. Our soil is red sandy loam over limestone, which is classic Cabernet Sauvignon dirt. Most of the vines for Yalumba The Menzies were planted in 1985 and are trellised tall with wide rows. Bunches are usually small with small berries giving a concentration that favours the creation of full bodied reds.
