  • 2018 ‘Cane Cut’ Marsanne, Tahbilk, 500ml Dessert Wine, Port & Dessert Wine

2018 ‘Cane Cut’ Marsanne, Tahbilk, 500ml

    £1595

Established in 1860, Tahbilk is a historic family-owned winery, renowned for their Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and of course their Marsanne!  Marsanne is one of the world’s rarest grape varieties originating in the Northern Rhone & Hermitage regions of France it is grown in only 3 other countries, Australia, America & Switzerland. Tahbilk holds the largest and oldest single holding of the variety in the world.

This beautiful dessert wine is full of citrus and tropical fruit characters that are complemented by lush marmalade, nutty and honeysuckle notes on a richly opulent palate, refreshed by a mineral-like acidity.  Delicious with stinky cheeses or summer puddings or just because you enjoy life on the sweet side!

This wine is named after the practice of cutting the canes, where the fruiting cane is detached from the vine. The bunches of grapes are left to hang prior to harvest, drying the fruit which concentrates the flavours and sugars, resulting in a luscious wine.

  • 2017 Museum Release Marsanne, TahbilkWhite Wine

    2017 Museum Release Marsanne, Tahbilk

    £1950

Established in 1860, Tahbilk is a historic family-owned winery, renowned for its Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and of course their Marsanne!  Marsanne is one of the world’s rarest grape varieties originating in the Northern Rhone & Hermitage regions of France it is grown in only 3 other countries, Australia, America & Switzerland. Tahbilk holds the largest and oldest single holding of the variety in the world.

In this 2017 vintage the complexity that comes with age, shines through with lifted honeysuckle and toasty notes on the nose. The rich and honeyed palate is brimming with lemon citrus fruits and finishes with a chalky, mineral freshness.

Tahbilk’s history with Marsanne is traced back to the 1860s with the sourcing of ‘White Hermitage’ cuttings from the ‘St Hubert’s’ Vineyard in Victoria’s Yarra Valley. The grape was Marsanne and although none of these plantings has survived, the Estate still produces Marsanne from plantings dating back to 1927.

  • 2011 The Hermit Crab Viognier/Marsanne, d’Arenberg Wine Republic Heros White Wine

    2011 The Hermit Crab Viognier/Marsanne, d’Arenberg

    £1995

The 2011 Hermit  has an Incredibly fragrant nose full of sweet apricot and gingery spice. The palate is luscious and generous but has great acid which tightens the wine, adding freshness and a clean crisp finish. Slight pithy feel which builds on the spice notes. Lovely as a fresh stand-alone drink that still exhibits some mouthfeel, or equally well adapted to enjoy with a range of foods from freshly shucked oysters through to spicy Thai style dishes.

Many of McLaren Vale’s vineyards are on free-draining soils underlain with limestone, formed by the calcareous remains of the local marine fauna. One such creature was the Hermit Crab, a reclusive little crustacean that inhabits the cast-off shells of others. The Osborn family thought the name appropriate for this, McLaren Vale’s first-ever blend of Viognier and Marsanne. “Hermit” is also an abbreviation for the French appellation of Hermitage, where the Marsanne grape variety dominates.

  • 2015 Saint Joseph Blanc, Domaine Courbis White Wine

2015 Saint Joseph Blanc, Domaine Courbis

    £2750

An excellent example of white St Joseph from the Northern Rhône; this is very aromatic, with floral notes combining with ripe peach and a touch of brioche on the nose. Richly textured, but beautifully balanced on the palate with a refreshing finesse on the finish.

  • 2017 The Old Bloke and The Three Young Blonds, d’Arenberg Red Wine

2017 The Old Bloke and The Three Young Blonds, d’Arenberg

    £7500

A mix of gnarly, old Shiraz partnered with youthful, exotic and fragrant white varieties. The Shiraz offers a nose brimming with dark, earthen fruits, woody spices and rich blackberry aromas. Viognier adds fragrance in the form of apricot, ginger and florals, Roussanne delivers an exotic, dried almond and papaya note, and the Marsanne contributes pistachio and yellow stonefruit.

The palate is generous, with layers of fruit characters that ebb and flow through the entire length. The tannin structure is unique, thanks to the mingling of red and white phenolics. The rustic, chunky, mid-palate Shiraz tannins are tempered by the lusciousness of the white varieties, the finish enhanced by the addition of fragrant, flowery tannins, mainly on account of the Viognier and more nutty, walnut skin texture, from the Roussanne.

A complex and alluring wine that evolves in the glass. So much individual character and much to take in, but somehow we are left with a sense of harmony between the old bloke and the three young blondes.

  • 2020 Hermitage Blanc, Domaine Des Martinelles, *Magnum* White Wine

2020 Hermitage Blanc, Domaine Des Martinelles, *Magnum*

    £13500

    Signed by winemaker Pascal Fayolle.

This white Hermitage is 100% Marsanne from 45 year old vines. The wine is aged on the fine lees for 18 months in oak barrels giving richness to the palate.

In the glass, it has wonderful golden colour with an intense and powerful nose. Toasted notes with fruity, floral and buttery nuances. The mouth is rich, wide and very long. The final is long with a beautiful mineral weft.   This is a wine with great ageing potential

The Hermitage Appellation extends over the hills that dominate the City of Tain l’Hermitage on 136 Ha, on three municipalities of the Drôme: Tain l’Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage and Larnage, on the left bank of the Rhône. The vineyard that this wine is made from is a very small old south facing vineyard that’s dates back to antiquity.
