2017 Finis Terrae Red, Cousino Macul

    £2895

Finis Terrae, which is Latin for “End of the Earth”, is a flagship red blend that embodies the essence of the Maipo Valley and the winemaking heritage of Cousiño Macul. This wine represents the culmination of careful selection and blending, where only the finest barrels of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from the estate’s vineyards are chosen after extensive tasting trials to find the perfect expression of balance and harmony.

2019 Les Allées de Cantemerle, Château Cantemerle

    £2900

A traditional and deeply coloured Bordeaux, with a delicate, elegant bouquet of blackcurrant and tobacco through to a smooth, silky palate with a touch of raspberry on the finish.  This second wine of Château Cantemerle comes mainly from the Château’s young vines and is produced in the same way as its elder brother. Les Allées de Cantemerle has the same great personality as the Grand Vin, but is ready to drink earlier.

Situated in the Haut-Médoc, the Château de Cantermerle vineyard covers 91 hectares of vines. The soils are silica-gravel, which are a result of a thousand-year-old erosion of the Pyrenees by the River Garonne and form one of the fundamental elements of this quality vineyard. The soils are poor in nutrients, so the vines ‘struggle’, resulting in grapes with a high concentration of flavour. In addition, the small pebbles in the soil provide a filter and contribute to the grape’s maturity by reflecting the sun’s rays during the day and retaining the heat during the cooler nights. The vines have an average age of 30 years.

2019 Te Kahu ‘Gimblett Gravels Vineyard’, Craggy Range

    £2995

Te Kahu means ‘the cloak’ in Maori and refers to the mist that envelops Giants Winery in the Tukituki Valley. Legend has it that this mist was used to protect a mythical Maori maiden from the sun as she visited her lover Te Mata.

This wine has concentrated aromas of cassis, black olive and dried tobacco lead to a palate of great energy, with red fruits and liquorice framed by dark chocolate-laced tannins.

Hawke’s Bay’s Gimblett Gravels winegrowing district lies on the ancient bed of the Ngaruroro River, which changed course in 1867 to expose the soils for possible viticulture. The relatively low altitude and proximity to the sea yet sheltered from the direct effect of the sea breeze, creates a temperate maritime climate. This location, altitude, and the stony soil’s warming influence make it the warmest site in Hawke’s Bay. The lack of excessive heat in the Gimblett Gravels is also a critical factor as it means the aromatic characters in the fruit, which contribute to the floral notes, are retained. The soils are composed of small to medium-sized greywacke stones interspersed with layers of silt and sand down to a depth of at least 40 metres. The stones on the surface absorb sunlight and heat during the day and then radiate heat at night, enhancing the vine’s ripening capacity. The stony soil structure allows for very rapid drainage after rainfall events; the low water-holding ability the vine’s growth to be controlled. The soils in this locality produce rich, ripe, yet elegantly structured red wines with a distinctive mineral, hot stone and fine dusty character, affectionately known as ‘Gimblett Dust’.

  • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2020-three-constantia-glen/">2020 Three, Constantia Glen</a> Red Wine

    2020 Three, Constantia Glen

    £3100

This delicious three-way blend was carefully crafted from grapes grown on the estate. It comprises 55% Merlot, 26% Cabernet Franc and 19% Cabernet Sauvignon and was matured for 17 months in 30% new, 50% second fill- and 20% third fill French oak barrels. The wine was not fined, but only lightly filtered prior to bottling to subtly mellow the rich tannin structure. This vintage shows the phenomenal structure and freshness that has become synonymous to the Constantia Glen THREE, but also has excellent concentration. This means that it can be enjoyed in its youth, yet it will certainly age and develop admirably for another 10-12 years under correct cellaring conditions.

In the glass, the nose of this wine has great expression with forthcoming red and black fruit aromas. Following these initial ripe fruit aromas, there is a complex collection of savoury notes woven with lingering flavours of tomato leaf, blackcurrant, and cedar.  The palate shows great intensity and complexity of flavours with the dark fruit and distinct savoury notes on the nose following flawlessly onto that first sip. The fine-grain, elegant and velvety tannins really compliment the richness of the wine and promise great aging potential if stored under correct cellar conditions. This full-bodied blend has an earthy minerality and an inherent freshness that brings about a lingering, well-defined finish.

The vineyards that the grapes come from for this wine are tucked in the steep valley on the eastern side of Table Mountain. The climate is Mediterranean with cooling breezes from the Atlantic Ocean encouraging balance and complexity in the grapes, this combined with the cool southern slopes and deep mountain soils provide the ideal setting for the making of these top quality wines.

A stylish red showing an abundance of ripe plummy and blueberry fruit, enhanced by hints of herbs and a delicate touch of mint. Layers of dark chocolate, vanilla and juniper.  Rich, soft and opulent tannins lead to a long, intense finish. Sophisticated Tuscan at its best.

Ripa delle More was created in 1980 as an innovation, breaking the rules of the time. Then it changed year after year to become a blend of traditional Sangiovese (50%) with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

The grapes are carefully selected from the Ripa delle More vineyard, which is situated at an altitude of 255 to 265 metres above sea-level. The sustainably cultivated vines exceed 20 years in age and are pruned according to the single Guyot method to ensure low yields of approximately 42 hectolitres per hectare.
