The Champagne Geoffroy winery is in Aÿ, on the north-east edge of Épernay; the Champagne Geoffroy Expression Brut NV is typical of the house’s style, displaying finesse and elegance. Produced from a classic Champagne blend of 50% Pinot Meunier, 40% Pinot Noir and 10% Chardonnay.

In the glass, it is ripe and fragrant, with an expressive bouquet that releases beautiful aromas of apple sauce enhanced with notes of vanilla. On the palate, the attack is refined with a broad range of fruit and a beautifully fresh finish.

Joseph Perrier Cuvée Royale Brut Champagne, so named for it was a favourite of Queen Victoria and King Edward VII, is a soft, smooth and ripe Champagne. On the palate, 23 crus (Champagne villages) are carefully blended to create a fine and delicate cuvee, which is aged typically for three years. Offering an easy balanced style with crisp floral fruit aromas including notes of apple and pear, it has a soft and refreshing aftertaste. This bottle of Champagne is the perfect apéritif, due to its freshness, long-lasting aromas and full body.

With a luminous pink-orange hue, the Gaston Chiquet Rosé 1er Cru is an elegant Champagne produced from a blend of 40% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Meunier and 30% Pinot Noir. Gaston Chiquet has been run by eight generations of the Chiquet family. Currently, the two brothers Antoine and Nicolas assure continuity while respecting their ancestral roots.

In the glass it has aromas of fresh peach, red berries, mint, green apples, rhubarb and pastry cream. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, crisp and fleshy, with a charming core of fruit, racy acids and a lingering, flavourful finish.

2018 ‘Ex Machina’ Sparkling Rosé, Sugrue South Downs

Sugrue South Downs is the personal project of celebrated English sparkling winemaker Dermot Sugrue. His highly acclaimed and multi-award-winning sparkling wine ‘The Trouble with Dreams’ is stuff of legend and we think the best sparkling wine in the UK.

This his Sugrues very first rosé, a wine named “Rosé ex Machina” because of its serendipitous conception: 2016 was so fine in quality yet so meagre in quantity that Dermot had decided to make just one wine, putting all of his fruit into the prestige “Cuvée Dr Brendan O’Regan”. Then, just as the harvest was coming to an end and in Dermot’s own words, “the God’s intervened” and he was offered some outstanding fruit from the beautiful Jenkyn Place Vineyard in Hampshire. From these grapes “Rosé ex Machina” was born.

Just 4,500 bottles and 200 magnums were produced.

It has a lovely salmon pink colour with a fine and persistent perlage. The nose is complex and intense, with aromas of red berries, strawberries, and raspberries, followed by hints of flowers and spices. On the palate, the wine is fresh and lively, with a perfect balance between fruitiness, acidity, and creamy texture. The finish is long and elegant, leaving a pleasant and refreshing sensation. This champagne is ideal as an aperitif or paired with seafood, sushi, or light desserts.

‘Aged on the lees for 3-to-5 years in cellars dug out of ancient Gallo-Roman chalk pits, this rosé Champagne is serious, and seriously delicious. Displaying a medium ‘vieux rose’ hue and narrow cordon, the wine exudes summer pudding fruits and fresh bread notes. On the palate, the wine shows finesse in its light body, zippy acidity and ‘crackling’ mousse texture. Nicely balanced with good length. Quite vinous, this wine is a lovely aperitif but will also work well with wild salmon or even light desserts.’ Patricia Stefanowicz MW

An irresistible rosé Champagne combining great precision, freshness and fullness with charming aromas of wild strawberries, red and black currants, along with beautiful hints of vanilla and cinnamon spice.

This rosé Champagne was produced using the solera method. Palmer & Co is one of the rare champagne houses to have adapted this well-known technique, often used for Spanish wines, for the creation of its champagnes. Each year, Palmer & Co adds red wines from the new harvest, which have been barrel-aged and typically amounts to 6-7%, to compensate for the wine drawn off. This perpetual reserve was started 40 years ago and is kept in stainless steel tanks. It forms an extraordinary library expressing a unique combination of red fruit and spice aromas and flavours. This rosé Champagne was then bottle-aged for two to three years on the lees, in the 18-metre- deep chalk cellars which imbues the wine with incredible complexity.

The composition was completed with 35% reserve wines in order to preserve the consistency of the Champagne Collet house style, year after year. This cuvée reached full maturity after a minimum of three years of bottle ageing in the historic, limestone cellars in Ay, which are centuries old.
