This is the wineries tasting note and its so good we thought we would share it with you :

To experience the exotic aroma and tastes of this Pinot Noir from the Waipara Valleys, we’d like you to join us on a magic carpet ride to a middle eastern market bazaar.  The bustling market stalls fill the air with the aroma of ripe berries and dried fruits. The spice stall owners spruik their wears, waving vanilla pods and pouring cardamom spices theatrically onto their scales in front of your nose.  All these elements combine in glorious cinematic technicolour for the tastebuds. Softly textured with ripe berry fruits and dried currants set against a backdrop of warmed spices.   Rub this bottle of Waipara Pinot Noir three times before pouring it, and the first sip might transport you there again. No magic carpet required.

2022 Pinot Noir Pioneer Block 15 ‘Strip Block’, Saint Clair

Original price was: £2395.Current price is: £2000. 16% saving

The 2022 Pioneer Block 15 ‘Strip Block’ Pinot Noir from Saint Clair Family Estate is a beautifully perfumed, site-driven wine that captures the finesse and fruit purity of Marlborough’s southern valleys. Saint Clair, a family-owned winery founded by Neal and Judy Ibbotson, has become one of New Zealand’s most awarded producers. Renowned for their commitment to quality and innovation, the estate focuses on small, distinct parcels, known as Pioneer Blocks, that showcase the exceptional diversity of Marlborough terroir.

‘Strip Block’ takes its name from a narrow strip of aged, devigorating soils found at the base of the southern foothills of the lower Waihopai Valley. This unique micro-site, with its clay-based soil and slight northerly aspect, naturally limits vine vigour and promotes concentration in the fruit.

In the glass, the 2022 Strip Block Pinot Noir is elegant and expressive, offering lifted aromas of bright red cherry, wild raspberry, and subtle floral notes. The palate is finely textured with a rich, rounded mouthfeel, underpinned by silky tannins and a refined thread of charry oak that adds gentle structure and complexity. The balance between ripe fruit, minerality, and freshness gives the wine both charm and ageing potential.

2022 Devils Staircase Pinot Noir, Rockburn

    £2450

This Pinot Noir bursts with flavours of red cherry, cranberry and bramble fruit. Rounded and fruity on the palate, with supple tannins and a very moreish finish. This is devilishly good.

The Devil’s Staircase wines are inspired by the winding road leading from Queenstown to Kingston along the shores of Lake Wakatipu. Sourced from several Central Otago vineyards, the Devil’s Staircase Pinot Noir takes the willing down into the realm of decadence and Bacchanalian delights. Here, everything is pleasure spiced up with a bit of naughty.   The unrelenting Central Otago environment tortures the vines whose twisted limbs produce a wine worthy of absolution; strong and sensual with lashings of dark fruit, sinfully succulent and devilishly good.

The 2021 Single Vineyard Pinot Noir from Auntsfield Estate is a striking testament to Marlborough’s oldest winemaking heritage, rooted in the region’s first vineyard and winery, established in 1892. These soils impart a distinctive structure and minerality that define the character of Auntsfield’s wines, and nowhere is this more evident than in their Pinot Noir.

In the glass, the 2021 Pinot Noir reveals a deep ruby hue, a prelude to its aromatic intensity and layered complexity. Fragrant notes of black cherry and ripe plum rise gracefully, lifted by dark red florals and enriched with hints of forest floor, dark chocolate, and subtle cigar box. The palate delivers an elegant yet powerful expression of the vintage, with concentrated berry and plum fruit unfolding across a plush, silky texture. Finely polished tannins provide structure and balance, carrying the wine through to a seamless, enduring finish.

2021 Omaka Reserve Pinot Noir, Saint Clair

    £2995

The Reserve wines from Saint Clair represent the estate’s pinnacle wines – the best of the best.   This 2021 has concentrated flavours of black cherry, blackcurrant, Kalamata olive, and perfumed wildflowers, that lead to an elegant palate with a structure reminiscent of finely powdered cocoa. The finish is long incorporating freshly roasted coffee beans, toasty oak and spice.

Ageing potential: This wine is drinking beautifully now or with careful cellaring will mature into a more complex wine that can be enjoyed for the next 8 to 10 years or beyond.

This vineyard site has been the foundation for some of Saint Clair’s finest wines. This is the vineyard where Saint Clair Family Estate first discovered the fruit to make their flagship Saint Clair Wairau Reserve Sauvignon Blanc. The fruit is sourced from a single vineyard in the lower Wairau Valley. The Block One site was previously part of the Wairau flood plain and is renowned for its deep, highly fertile, free-draining soils, which have been built up over time and help to produce the intensity of flavour in the resulting wine. The vineyard has a flat profile and is situated approximately three metres above sea level. It is now protected from flooding by a stopbank. Located in a slightly cooler site than the majority of the Marlborough Valley, the vines have a slower annual ripening period. The fruit is carefully monitored during the ripening stage and is harvested during the cooler evenings, at maximum flavour maturity and physiological ripeness.

    £2995

A delicate, supple and approachable Pinot Noir with aromas of dried lavender and wild thyme combined with red cherry. On the palate, flavours of crushed raspberry and orange zest are layered with savoury undertones.

The Pinot Noir fruit comes from the Wairarapa subregion of Martinborough, in the southeastern corner of the North Island. This soil produces exceptional Pinot Noir, which stylistically shows incredible complexity, a reserved intellectual feel, and great length.
