  Crafted at the historic Boekenhoutskloof estate, established in 1776 and nestled in the remote reaches of Franschhoek, The Wolftrap Red is a bold, expressive blend of Syrah and Mourvèdre that pays tribute to the pioneers who, in the early days, ventured into the Cape wilderness and erected a wolf trap on Boekenhoutskloof. To date, no wolf, either real or mystical, has been seen in the valley!

  Marc Kent, the visionary behind Boekenhoutskloof, delivers a red that is both richly layered and effortlessly drinkable.  In the glass, the nose opens with an aromatic bouquet of red and black fruits, lifted by floral hints of violet and rose petals. Classic garrigue notes underscore the wine’s wild character, while undertones of cured meat and iodine hint at deeper complexity. On the palate, lush blueberry, dark plum and black cherry flavours unfold on a plush, full-bodied frame. A smooth, velvety midpalate reveals subtle spice, coriander, clove, and a touch of plum sauce, balanced by refined acidity and ripe, polished tannins. Earthy and elegant, the finish is long, juicy, and delightfully savoury.  A bit of a bargain!

  The 2023 vintage of The Chocolate Block continues to build on its legacy as one of South Africa’s most iconic and sought-after red blends. Crafted predominantly from Syrah, with carefully selected additions of Grenache, Cinsault, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Viognier (blend proportions vary annually), this cult-status wine showcases Boekenhoutskloof’s mastery in balancing innovation and consistency. Only 4,043 barrels were produced, further enhancing its rarity and appeal.

  In the glass, the wine opens with an intensely aromatic bouquet of blackberries, blueberries, and ripe bramble fruit, intertwined with black olive tapenade, crushed violets, and a dusting of white pepper and coriander seed. The palate is rich yet polished, delivering layers of dark berry fruit, red liquorice, and cherry compote, underscored by hints of cherry tobacco and exotic spice.

The Boekenhoutskloof Syrah is a benchmark expression of Swartland Syrah, sourced from two exceptional sites: the rugged, schist-rich slopes of Porseleinberg (90%) and the sandstone-tinged Goldmine vineyards (10%) on the flanks of the Kasteelberg.

  The 2021 vintage opens with a concentrated, perfumed nose of ripe plum, violet petals, and exotic spice. There’s an immediate sense of depth and precision, with layers of black and red berries, cracked pepper, and subtle earthy undertones.   Porseleinberg is the result of Marc Kent’s (of Boekenhoutskloof fame) determined search for South Africa’s finest Syrah, a journey that ultimately led him to the Swartland. There, atop the windswept Porseleinberg mountain, he discovered a remote, rugged farm with schist-rich soils, which is now recognised as one of the world’s great Syrah sites.

  Established as a single-vineyard project and owned by Boekenhoutskloof, Porseleinberg is meticulously farmed and vinified by winemaker Callie Louw, whose mastery and vision have elevated every vintage since the inaugural 2010 release.
