  • 2022 Barbera D’Asti Cipressi ‘Nizza’ DOCG, Michele Chiarlo Red Wine

2022 Barbera D’Asti Cipressi ‘Nizza’ DOCG, Michele Chiarlo

    £2995

An exceptional Barbera showing wonderful clarity and elegance, with aromas of red berries, ripe cherry, wild raspberry and sweet notes of tobacco. Complex and structured on the palate with a rounded, silky texture and pleasing savoury finish.

The grapes are grown in the six-hectare vineyard of Tenuta la Court in the commune of Castelnuovo Calcea. Castelnuovo Calcea is one of the 18 designated communes within the appellation of Nizza DOCG. Originally a subzone of the Barbera d’Asti DOCG, Nizza became a separate DOCG in 2014. The Guyot trained vines are planted at a density of 5,000 vines per hectare and are grown on southeast to southwest facing slope at an elevation of 230 to 280 metres above sea level. The soils are known as ‘Astiane Sands’ and consist of calcareous clay marl of sedimentary marine origin, with a good presence of lime and sand and are rich in microelements, in particular magnesium. The vines are very low yielding with excess bunches thinned at the end of the summer in order to concentrate the flavours in the remaining grapes.

  • 2018 Barolo Tortoniano, Michele Chiarlo Red Wine

    2018 Barolo Tortoniano, Michele Chiarlo

    £4950

This magnificent Barolo is a complex and full-bodied wine with inviting aromas of deep fruits, rose petals, juniper berries and a hint of fine spice. The palate shows a wonderful harmony, with silky tannins and remarkable elegance and persistence.

The vineyard sits on a southeast to southwesterly orientation and the vines are trained according to the Guyot method. The vines are thinned during the summer months to control the health and vigour of the vine. The soils are from the Tortonian geological area of La Mora and Barolo, which is characterised by sedimentary clay and Sant’Agata marl interspersed with grey-blue sandstone. A significant presence of microelements specifically magnesium and manganese enhance the soil’s complexity. The grapes are manually harvested at optimum maturity.

  • 2010 Barbera La Court Vigna Veja Nizza, Michele Chiarlo Red Wine

2010 Barbera La Court Vigna Veja Nizza, Michele Chiarlo

    £7350

This fascinating vineyard is located at the top of the highest hill of the La Court estate and has an exposure of 360 degrees surface area of the vineyard.  Set within a UNESCO World Heritage Site the vineyard that the grapes for this wine came from is only 1 hectare in size and was planted in 1964 so production is very limited and only in the best years.

2010 was one such year producing an intense and concentrated Barbera.   The nose is elegant yet complex with notes of black fruits, black cherry, wild flowers and sweet spices.  These flavours flow into the palate which is like velvet, silky and fresh.  The classic Barbera acidity is integrated and allows the cassis and black fruit flavours to shine.   The finish is long and persistent.  This wine will improve and last for many years.   Drink now to 2035.

This is great wine for Agnolotti with a roasted meat sauce, tagliolini with porcini, braised lamb and well-matured cheeses.

The label for this special Riserva was created by Ugo Nespolo, one of the greatest exponents of Italian Pop Art.
