  2012 Syrah Le Pousseur, Bonny Doon

  Bonny Doon Vineyards’ 2012 Syrah, “Le Pousseur,” is made from Syrah grapes grown in some nice Central Coast spots – 48% Alamo Creek Vineyard, 18% Bien Nacido Vineyard, 18% Spanish  Springs Vineyard and 16% Ventana Vineyard. These are cool-climate sites and the website states that with “a fair amount of whole clusters included, this is a savory Syrah of great restraint.”

  Randall Grahm writes that he finds Le Posseur “enchanting and captivating rather than overpowering.” He labels it as a “feminine” Syrah. I don’t make it a habit to argue with a winemaker about his wines, but I was taken to task once for the use of the term “feminine” as a sexist way to describe a wine. PC or not PC, it does not strike me as feminine. Maybe it’s feminine in a masculine way. Or masculine in a feminine way. Maybe it’s just a wine having a crisis of sexuality. Or maybe it’s just a Syrah of great restraint. It retails for $26 and 2,126 cases were produced.

  Under the screw cap is a wine which is opaque indigo. Big blueberry fruit dominates the nose with a savory undercurrent. It is possibly the fruitiest nose I’ve experienced from a Bonny Doon red, which usually lean savory. The palate shows dark fruit too, with just a hint of that black olive note Grahm’s wines often exhibit. Very nice acidity and a good tannic grip top off an entirely enjoyable experience. The oak touch is nice, just right in fact.

Decant to let oxygen do its thing.” (02/2015) According to the winery: “We’ve been in a nice aromatic groove of late with Le Pousseur, largely in virtue of the string of very cool vintages, and sourcing our fruit exclusively from cool climate sites. The ’12 Pousseur (who is to say why) is still in a Marlon Brando-like bit of a sullen funk, but there is no question that underneath that brooding exterior, there beats the heart of a Wild One. The Alamo Creek component (possibly in virtue of its extremely gravelly soil) seems to add a strong mineral/earthy/bloody note, not utterly unreminiscent of Cornas. With more air, you begin to gradually discern the characteristic anise/licorice character that typifies Syrah. On the palate, the wine has a refreshing acidity, tannins well-resolved and is remarkably savory with an exceptionally long finish. This wine is still amazingly young and will benefit from several years of ageing (if you can wait). If you can’t wait, decanting is well advised.”

  2017 ‘The McRae Wood’ Shiraz, Jim Barry

  This Shiraz honours the vision of pioneer Clare Valley winemaker Jim Barry. In 1964, Jim purchased 28 hectares of prime land from Duncan McRae Wood and planted his first vineyard with Shiraz. It was an inspired choice of both grape variety and location.

  This wine displays lovely red and purple tones in the glass.  Red and purple fruits carry onto the palate supported by a rich, earthy undertone and fine silky tannins giving the wine terrific structure, great length and persistent flavour.  Rich, vibrant aromas of blackcurrant and briary fruits with hints of vanillin oak and spice.

  Made using the ‘Jim Barry’ method and as such can be enjoyed upon release, but would equally benefit from cellaring to allow the wine to show some mature characteristics that come with age.

  This is a powerhouse of a wine, the 4 grape varieties are united in an intriguing and authoritative wine that casts a net of attractive aromas to reel you in. Its hedonistic charm of plum, mulberry, cassis, and blackberry is underpinned with masculine notes of English leather, cedar, tobacco, truffle, and cured meat.   The palate is delicious and mouth-filling.

  This suave Cabernet Sauvignon-driven blend is undoubtedly intended to set sail for a long-lived journey and beckons those in search of a focussed and multi-faceted wine. Adorning this solid backbone, Merlot contributes with lively red fruit and a cool note of fennel that resurfaces as the wine develops in the glass. Trailed by hints of graphite and capsicum, Cabernet Franc takes a bow, adding even more defined fruit and finesse. Noticeable florals, rosemary, and intensity stem from Stellenbosch Petit Verdot to complete this flavour journey.

  2022 Chardonnay Banghoek Reserve, Delaire Graff

  Delaire Graff is one of the leading wine estates in South Africa and is situated on the top of the Helshoogte Pass in the Stellenbosch Wine Appellation. It looks down on the Banghoek Valley, and the West and East facing sides of the majestic Simonsberg.

  Morné Vrey, the Estate’s Award-Winning Winemaker, has produced a seriously good wine with this 2020 Delaire Graff Chardonnay Banghoek Reserve.  In the glass it is buttery yellow with aromas of citrus, white fleshed peaches and smoked lime. The palate is rich and generous with flavours of sweet lemon, and stone fruit adding complexity.   Lots of intensity and appetising qualities.

  The grapes for this wine come from the high-altitude terraces located on the steep slopes of Botmaskop Mountain. These terraces are frequently cooled by Atlantic breezes thus the estate can count on impeccable grapes that carry the intensityof fruit that is the hallmark of Delaire Graff wines.

  The 2020 Pinot Noir from Pegasus Bay is crafted by one of New Zealand’s most respected family-owned estates. Established in 1986 by Ivan and Christine Donaldson, Pegasus Bay has become a cornerstone of North Canterbury winemaking. With deep roots in the Waipara Valley and over four decades of family commitment, the Donaldsons have cultivated a unique estate focused on producing wines of authenticity, complexity, and longevity. Their mature, own-rooted vines grow on free-draining, north-facing terraces composed of the ancient Glasnevin Gravels, a mixture of greywacke, silt, and loam, yielding low-vigour vines and intensely flavoured fruit.   2018 Cabernet Franc Mini Ediciones, Finca Decero

  Finca Decero is a world-class wine producer located in the Agrelo sub-appellation of Luján de Cuyo in the northwestern part of the province of Mendoza.  Their famed Remolinos Vineyard derives its name from the little whirlwind spiral formations of soil which form in the afternoon as the gentle wind lifts the dry soil from the paths of the vineyard into swaying ‘dust devils’.  This natural phenomenon draws the attention of our overly protective Lechuza owls in the vineyard who sometimes take flight seemingly to chase them away!

  2018 is a stellar vintage in Mendoza and will be long remembered.

  The 2018 Decero Mini Ediciones Cabernet Franc is one of their ‘rare varieties & limited edition’ wines. Of this vintage, only 7,192 bottles were made. The wine shows nuances of pepper, graphite and plum notes with fresh aromatics and taut acidity resulting in a well-structured, elegant Cabernet Franc with great potential for ageing.

  The 2015 Finca Martelo Reserva is a juicy wine, thrilling the mouth with plentiful red and black fruit.   A signature blend of all the varieties on the VIK estate, the red fruit notes from the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot intermingle perfectly with the black fruit and spice of the Carmenère, all underpinned by a mineral hint of Cabernet Franc and the violet nuances of Syrah.

  Situated within the valley’s interior, the vineyard benefits from a rich tapestry of diverse terroirs and microclimates. Each parcel features unique exposures, tempered by coastal breezes, which intricately crafts complexity in the resulting wines. The vineyards are planted across 12 small valleys, totalling 327 hectares. More than 6,000 soil analyses were conducted to match clonal selection of rootstock and varieties. The soil types include colluvial, alluvial, sand, clay, and gravel stone, each imparting a distinctive characteristic to the resulting blend. Milla Calla incorporates all the varieties on the estate.
