2019 Old Stage Chardonnay, Gabilan Winery
£2195Add to BasketA richly textured Chardonnay, with bright notes of citrus, pear and tangerine and a touch of oak spice through to a long, elegant finish with mineral nuances.
The fruit comes from the estate ‘Grava’ vineyard, which is one of the most northerly plantings in Monterey County. It nestles up to the Gabilan Mountain Range on the eastern side of the Salinas Valley; approximately 10 miles directly across from the Santa Lucia Highlands. The marine influence of the nearby Monterey Bay and the morning fog which clears for the afternoon sun, results in a cool mesoclimate and a long hang-time for the fruit. The grapes reflect the cool climate character, with complex aromatics and flavours and natural balancing acidity. will continue to evolve, increasing in complexity and roundness over several years. Drink now to 2028. 2021 Laurens Campher Chenin Blanc, Muratie
£2595Add to BasketLaurens Campher was a young German soldier who started farming at Muratie in 1685. This blend is a labour of love, much like Laurens’ love for Ansela van de Caab. Their love was ultimately rewarding, bringing about the birth of their three children, her freedom and the development of a farm that was only officially granted to Campher in 1699 but is still going strong over three centuries later.
This wine is made from meticulously sourced grapes from different sites and slopes. Vineyards vary in age from 10 – 15 years old. The Chenin Blanc is from an old north facing bush vine block with low yields and good fruit purity.
For all its freshness, elegance and focus, the wine’s flavours are complex and intense, ranging from bright lemon, fresh pineapple, apricots and juicy nectarine to more concentrated lime marmalade as well as caramel and cream (from barrel fermentation and 11 months of maturation in mostly older French oak). On the palate the initial impression is floral (heady honeysuckle) finishing with white peaches and apricots, with hints of citrus and a fresh acidity – great persistence promising enjoyment over at least five years.

2016 Directors`Cut Cabernet Sauvignon, Heartland Wines
£2750Add to BasketMade by Ben Glaetzer from 70+ year old vines this wine is Heartland’s most powerful expression of Langhorne Creek’s classic varietals. Only the best fruit makes the Directors’ Cut.
The 2016 vintage of Directors’ Cut Cabernet Sauvignon gives a very clear understanding of the power and finesse of Langhorne Creek. Here the fruit of old vines are showcased by Ben Glaetzer’s refined winemaking and matured in the finest oak to bring the intensity of the Cabernet Sauvignon to the forefront. Look for delicate floral and herbal notes to act as a counterpoint to the raw majesty of the fruit.
Ben reckons this might be the finest vintage he has ever seen from Langhorne Creek. Only time will tell. Harvest was more generous than the previous few years, with above-average quantity and quality. Total degree days were up from the last three years, with wonderful ripeness levels recorded leading to amazing fruit intensity. This may supersede the 2012 vintage for overall quality and has led to a very happy winemaker.

2022 Isabella Chardonnay, Muratie
£2950Add to BasketFor current Muratie owners Rijk and Kim Melck, there could be only one name for their Chardonnay, made from the free -run juice of hand-harvested, whole-bunch pressed grapes, fermented naturally and then matured in 500l French oak for nine months: the name of their baby daughter, Isabella.
In this fresh and elegant wine with its peach-blossom fragrance, the aim is to evoke those bedtime butterfly kisses of their beautiful baby girl, so the oaking (10 months in this case) is subtle, serving only to spice the stone fruit, melon, and citrus flavours with hints of hazelnuts and vanilla cream. It’s beautifully delicate and understated, with a pure, slightly piquant and lingering ‘mineral’ finish promising great charm well beyond the toddler years.

Port & Dessert Wine
2020 Ben Prins Cape Late Harvest, Muratie
£3100Add to BasketBen Prins, Muratie’s winemaker until 1987, was as unique as the wines he produced. A hard-working, no-nonsense kind of a man–quiet, contemplative and exceptionally particular–he was both a perfectionist and a traditionalist. It was said that he knew wine like the back of his hand– or, rather, foot, given that he considered shoes to be ‘unnecessary novelties’!
In his honour, this Port-style liqueur wine is made from traditional Port varieties (Tinta Barocca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Francisca and Souzão) that were planted in a single vineyard in the 1970s to produce a unique ‘field blend’.
On the nose, floral notes of violets and roses entice along with Christmas spice and plum pudding. Each sip is deeply rich, with flavours ranging from Kirsch-macerated black cherries to dark chocolate-enrobed hazelnuts. There are also savoury undertones – truffles and tobacco – with brisk acidity and warming alcohol in harmony with the lithely powerful structure. Seamlessly integrated after two years in old 225l French oak barrels, this world- class wine should reward contemplation for at least another two decades.

2018 Chateau Carbonnieux Blanc Grand Cru Classe
£3500Add to BasketChâteau Carbonnieux white is a legendary wine. It is said that in the 18th century, it was introduced to the Sultan of Constantinople’s palace because of its clarity and was called “mineral water from Carbonnieux”, thus defying Islamic law.
The clay–limestone of Garonne gravel found in the Pessac-Léognan Appellation certainly produces the best dry white wines in the Bordeaux region. When young, Carbonnieux white wines are delightfully refreshing and pure with a fruity, floral intensity. When mature, they develop hints of dried and candied fruits.
