This is the 2nd wine of Chateau Durfort-Vivens and is from the Margaux region of Bordeaux. A refined and multi-nuanced Margaux wine with intense aromas of cassis and blackberries, with a well-structured body, polished tannins and delicate layers of oak. Interestingly this wine was aged in Amphora. The whole property has been biodynamic since 2016.

The Syrah vines are grown in the High Agly Valley, where the vineyard is situated at 325 metres. At this elevation the vines benefit from the coastal breezes sweeping up from the Mediterranean Sea, which help to temper the scorching summer heat. The mountainous foothills of the Pyrenees provide good diurnal temperature differences, with cooler evenings offering the vines gentle respite from the heat, resulting in balanced fruit with natural freshness. The soils are made up of a mosaic of schist soils, which date back to the Cretaceous period. The schistous marl produces shallow black soils, forcing vines to put down deep roots in search of water and nutrients. The vineyard is certified organic.

A blend of Syrah, Grenache and Carignan, the vines thrive at an elevation of 350 metres in the Maury terroir of the northern part of the Roussillon. The climate is Mediterranean, strongly influenced by cooling coastal breezes combined with mountain freshness from the foothills of the Pyrenees which balance the hot, arid summers. The terroir is made up of a mosaic of brown and black schist soils, which date back to the Cretaceous period. Made from 45+ year old vines located to the south-east of the appellation, close to the commune of Courthézon. The terroir is composed by a variety of soils, which add complexity to the wine. A blend of Grenache (70%), Syrah (15%) and Mourvèdre (15%) the wine sees 10% new barrique and the rest in foudre.

2016 Gevrey Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Les Marchais, Domaine Pierre Naigeon
£6495Add to BasketThe 55-year-old vines are grown in the single vineyard ‘Les Marchais’ which faces the 1er Cru plots of Lavaux St Jacques and clos St Jacques. It is one of the best plots in Gevrey Chambertin. Alluring raspberry and cherry with notes of dried fruits on the nose. Medium to full-bodied with a little earthiness, this well-structured wine shows balanced oak, with fine ripe tannins. Silky and smooth on the palate this is classically elegant.
The Guyot trained vines are planted at a high density with 3,500 vines per hectare. The vineyards are managed using organic fertilisers and without the use of herbicides or insecticides. Ploughing, pruning and green harvests all take place. The vineyard soils are made up of clay and limestone with large chalky pebbles.

The 1er Cru vines are grown in a small parcel in the middle of the Gevrey Chambertin appellation, by the hill of the ‘Combe de Lavaux’. It is a sunny plot with a southeastern exposure that receives cooling breezes, which flow from the bottom of the valley. The soil is complex, ranging from limestone from Dijon to decarbonated silt. The vineyard is cultivated organically, without the use of herbicides and insecticides and will be certified from the 2019 vintage.

Pierre Naigeon believes passionately in sustainable farming. He looks to produce wines full of fragrance, revealing the natural terroir. The vines are grown in the Grand Cru vineyard of Charmes Chambertin, in a 25-hectare parcel of 60-year-old vines. The vineyards are meticulously managed with the use of organic fertilisers; no herbicides or insecticides are used. A sustainable approach is undertaken with ploughing, careful pruning and a green harvest.
