    Urlar is an organic and biodynamic winery based in Gladstone which is just north of Martinborough on the North Island of New Zealand.   They produce outstanding examples of Pinot Noir.

    An elegant wine of dark red berry fruits, dried herbs, lifted red florals and subtle savoury notes. The fruit is complexed by layers of whole bunch nuances, undergrowth, spices and earthy cedar. Elegantly concentrated with fine tannins and a silky texture. Beautifully suited to a rack of lamb or gamey dishes such as venison or duck.

    The wine has bright, crunchy red and forest berry fruits, with light spice on both nose and palate. The palate is well balanced with chalky tannins and modest depth. A supple minerality and attractive red fruit core leads to a vibrant finish.

    The fruit for this wine comes from 3.28 hectares of vineyards, including one Volnay plot by the name of ‘Les Longbois’ and various other sites within Puligny-Montrachet. The Domaine has practised organic viticulture since 1995 and was certified organic in 2012. Since 2005, it has also converted to biodynamic viticulture.

    Dog Point has since their first vintage in 2002, set aside a limited quantity of each vintage for later release, with this 2011 being the latest release from their museum.

    In its prime now this wonderful Marlborough Pinot Noir is a deep ruby in the glass, with aromas of spice and ripe red fruits imbued with hints of leather and mushroom, together with subtle spicy oak savouriness. On the palate, deliciously flavoured with intense red fruits, subtle sweetness and excellent balance. Well-integrated oak leads to a delicate lingering soft, supple finish.

    Dog Point Pinot is similar in production to some of the great houses of Burgundy and is made using 75% destemmed grapes and 25% whole bunches, which spends a total of 18 months in oak (30% new).

    This beguiling Magnum of Pinot Noir from the excellent 2019 vintage has outstanding depth of colour for Pinot Noir displaying an opaque dark red-black core with a dark red-purple hue. The powerfully scented nose is dominated by ripe black cherry and dark plum aromas laced with anise over toasty cedar, light earth and spice. The palate is rich and concentrated that’s filled with dark and black cherry flavours, dark plums and anise underpinned by scorched earth and spicy cedar. Sturdy but fine-grained tannins provide some underlying muscle to the fruit. Excellent power with a long finish of dark and black fruits, anise, scorched earth and spicy cedar. Will improve for 6-8 years.

    On the nose, the Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru shows aromas of red cherries, raspberry and wild strawberry aromas tinged with violet. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, a good acidity and a persistent finish.

    “En Champans” is one of the most highly regarded vineyards of Volnay. The name of the vineyard comes from two words “Champ” (field) and “pans” (old dialect for “pente” – slope). This 0.96 parcel is located on steep east-facing slopes. The top of the parcel has light brown chalky soil whereas the lower section of the parcel is more clay dominant with a darker brown and red-hued soil.

    The Domaine has practised organic viticulture since 1995 and was certified organic in 2012. Since 2005 it has also converted to biodynamic viticulture.
