2021 Chardonnay, Brokenwood
£2495Add to BasketEstablished in 1970 Brokenwood Wines is one of Australia’s most reputable premium wine labels and a must-visit in the Hunter Valley. Consistently listed as a 5 star winery, Brokenwood is home to the famous Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz, the highly acclaimed ILR Reserve Semillon, and the popular Cricket Pitch Range.
Brokenwood, along with a large number of Chardonnay producers, are harvesting much earlier than 10 years ago. This is partly due to a lot of vineyards reaching maturity, and therefore having great fruit flavour and concentration at lower sugar levels. Additionally, consumers are demanding more finely structured Chardonnay, meaning lower alcohols and less oak.
Approximately two-thirds from Beechworth the balance being from a combination of the Yarra Valley, Tumbarumba and the Hunter Valley.

2017 Semillon, Geyer Wine Co
£2500Add to BasketOld vine Semillon – what an absolute joy and example of the amazing heritage of Australia. Whilst much of the Barossa is ripping out old vines to replace with money-making, high yielding Shiraz, Dave Geyer is working with some of the great farmers of the area, devoted to preserving the old vines and varieties of the area. As Dave says, “once a century-old vine is gone, several generations must wait to see what it could produce again. This instant gratification is one of the downfalls of the industry. We work closely together to preserve this part of our history to ensure these vines stand the test of time and to produce some epic wines! “
Punchy fruit-driven nose, with pink grapefruit, lemon balm and moringa flowers. Textured, nutty palate with flavours of dried mango, tangerine, lemon sherberts and a firm, grippy finish. The end of the bottle might be a little cloudier, but don’t worry, it’s just due to the choice of producing wine without filtration or fining.
The Geyer Semillon is a blend of fruit from three different vineyards, each vinified in a way to best represent the site. Component 1 and 2 are sourced from two 90-100-year-old sites in the Barossa Valley, one which goes straight to stainless steel to best retain its vivid, fruit aromas, whilst the other, with more reductive, smokey aromas goes to old oak. The third site is a younger vineyard in the Eden Valley – and this portion spends two weeks on skins, with 50% whole bunches. All components were blended upon completion of fermentation and aged in a 1950’s fortified wine foudre for six months. This old wood infused with sherry and flor characters really twisted the Semillon in an amazing Jura-esque way – crack a bottle and see! Bottled without any addition of sulphur or fining/filtration.

2020 Riesling ‘Single Vineyard McKay’s, Jim Barry
£2500Add to BasketJThis Riesling was sourced from the McKay’s vineyard in Watervale. South or east-facing slopes are best suited for Riesling as they are shielded from the hot northerly winds that can occur during summer and also receive the cooler morning sun. The soil in the McKay’s vineyard is clay over limestone, which is free draining. The Clare valley climate is continental with a high diurnal temperature difference with clear skies. The cool nights lead to the preservation of crisp natural acidity and delicate flavours.
The wine displays minerality on the nose, with characters of crunchy green apples and wet slate. A firm acid line drives through the palate with lime, citrus and a mineral finish. It has a lush silky flow and a calming finish.

2021 Laissez Faire Riesling, Larry Cherubino
£2550Add to BasketThe 2021 Laissez-Faire Riesling from Larry Cherubino is a truly delicious example of Riesling wine. This is a completely dry white wine with spectacular intensity and a bouquet reminiscent of red apple and white peach with minerally notes in the background. White stone fruit flavours are persistent on the pallet, there is a subtle texture with tight knot acidity lingering in the background which provides length and persistence.
Laissez-Faire means “let it be” and this reflects the hands-off approach that winemaker Larry Cherubino employs. He has learnt from organics, bio-dynamics and natural wine practices, but is not dictated by one school of thought. Larrys says ‘ We don’t subscribe to dogma. You could call them natural wines, but we like to think of them as post-natural wines. We believe in healthy and sustainable vineyard practices and winemaking transparency with as little as possible between the vine and finished wine‘
In the Laissez-Faire wines, there’s no added tannin, or acid, or animal fining products. There is zero sulfur used throughout the winemaking and only a minimal amount at bottling. They are using alternate varieties and blends to make naturally balanced wines. From vine to bottle, the wine takes its course, hands-free. The wines are also vegan friendly.
