  • 2020 Pinotage, Groot Constantia Red Wine

    2020 Pinotage, Groot Constantia

    £2495

Aromas of ripe strawberry and raspberry combine with black cherry and plum while delicate use of French oak adds a hint of cacao. The bold, ripe fruit flavours follow on the palate and the fine tannin structure ensures a long, elegant finish.

The vineyards are located on the steep valley on the eastern side of Table Mountain. The grapes for this wine were grown in various blocks that range from 39 metres to 160 metres above sea level. All the slopes are south to south-east facing. The climate is Mediterranean with cooling breezes from the Atlantic Ocean encouraging balance and complexity in the grapes. The average rainfall is approximately 1,100mm per annum, which nourishes the predominantly Cartref and Glenrosa soil – a gravelly soil with low fertility. The climate, combined with the cool southern slopes and deep mountain soils provide the ideal setting for the making of this top-quality wine.

  • 2022 Koshu Private Reserve ‘Hishiyama Vineyard’, Grace Winery White Wine

2022 Koshu Private Reserve ‘Hishiyama Vineyard’, Grace Winery

    £2495

Made from Japan’s most important indigenous grape variety: Koshu.  Complex and layered aromas of green apple and lime are complemented by grassy notes, fennel, flint and coriander. This is bone dry and smooth on the tightly knitted palate with a tongue-tensing acidity enveloping the fruit through to a deliciously fresh and textured finish.

The grapes for the Hishiyama Private Reserve are grown in a vineyard with a complex granitic soil structure. The warm climate promotes healthy grapes with a good phenolic maturity at harvest time. A modern long cordon training system is being used as an alternative to the traditional trellising methods. Significant advances have been made in limiting yields and focussing on canopy management. These endeavours have concentrated flavours and sugars, balancing the high acidity that occurs naturally in this variety.

English wine has really come on leaps and bounds in the last five years, go longer a gimmick but serious players on the world scene.  Blackbook Winery is one of those at the forefront of this ….

  • 2023 ‘Tinto de la Casa’, Matias Riccitelli Red Wine

2023 ‘Tinto de la Casa’, Matias Riccitelli

    £2495

A complex and rich Malbec, with floral aromas, black pepper and toasty spice notes which are underpinned by a wealth of black fruit flavours. Opulent, with smooth tannins and balancing freshness through to a long, satisfying finish.

This blend is the result of co-fermentation of two Malbec sites. 50% of the grapes come from Las Compuertas, which is situated at 1,100 metres above sea level. The soils are one-metre deep loamy clay with a rocky subsoil, which offer the vines excellent drainage. The remaining 50% comes from the premium viticultural area of Gualtallary, where the vines are planted at 1,400 metres above sea level on calcareous soils. The wines produced here have a great freshness and a discernible spicy character. The grapes grow thicker skins at high altitudes to protect themselves against the UV rays, resulting in rich, concentrated wines. The ripe fruit is balanced by the acidity naturally retained at this cooler altitude.

  • 2021/22 Kekerengu Coast Sauvignon Blanc, Astrolabe White Wine

2021/22 Kekerengu Coast Sauvignon Blanc, Astrolabe

    £2495

The story of the Kēkerengū Coast Sauvignon Blanc is really defined by where it is: outside of the typical bounds of Marlborough. It is grown on limestone soils, which are not seen in the Wairau or Awatere Valleys. Kēkerengū is a narrow stretch between sea and mountain, and its extreme maritime climate has a profound influence on the wine, with an early budburst and late harvest. This combination of different soil and climate from the rest of Marlborough gives a very unique expression of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.

This 2021 vintage is dry, bone dry.  Wafting from the glass are aromas of citrus pith, lime and grapefruit zest and hints of jasmine tea, fennel and basil.  The palate is intense with flinty, almost salty notes and passionfruit flavours.  It has a lovely briny, salty, savoury finish which speaks a bit about the sea nearby. It’s a great wine with oysters on the half shell, and it’s a wine that really appeals to a lot of people around the world that would normally profess not to be huge Marlborough Sauvignon drinkers and may have more European drinking sensibilities.    Will develop in the bottle – drink now to 2028

  • 2022 Koshu Private Reserve, Grace Winery White Wine

2022 Koshu Private Reserve, Grace Winery

    £2495

This wine is made from Japan’s most important indigenous grape variety, Koshu, which is grown in Japan’s top Koshu producing region: Katsunuma.

Pure, sublimely crisp and mineral in style, this wine is fresh and elegant with rich aromas of fresh pear, white peach, honeysuckle, rosemary, clove and mineral stone notes. Dry, with a lively palate of crisp, ripe fruits and a charming acidity which offers the wine great backbone, through to a hint of umami on the finish.

Situated at the eastern end of the Kofu basin, the Katsunuma’s area is an alluvial fan with well-drained soils, an area which has been suitable for viticulture since ancient times. The characteristic, intricate terrain with its complex, volcanic soils produces wines that distinguish the sense of place. The vines are grown at elevations of above 400 metres; these high- altitude, hilly areas such as the Toriihira in Katsunuma, Hishiyama and Fukasawa districts produce limited yields, concentrated flavours and balancing acidity, due to the diurnal temperature swings. Traditional trellis pruning has been cast aside in favour of a modern long cordon training system which helps to control yields; concentrating flavours and sugars to balance the high acidity that occurs naturally in this variety. In order to reduce the effects of autumn rain, each bunch is covered with an umbrella and the fruit is hand-picked at optimal maturity.

  • 2021 Laissez Faire Riesling, Larry Cherubino Wine Republic Heros White Wine

2021 Laissez Faire Riesling, Larry Cherubino

    £2550

The 2021 Laissez-Faire Riesling from Larry Cherubino is a truly delicious example of Riesling wine. This is a completely dry white wine with spectacular intensity and a bouquet reminiscent of red apple and white peach with minerally notes in the background.  White stone fruit flavours are persistent on the pallet, there is a subtle texture with tight knot acidity lingering in the background which provides length and persistence.

Laissez-Faire means “let it be” and this reflects the hands-off approach that winemaker Larry Cherubino employs.  He has learnt from organics, bio-dynamics and natural wine practices, but is not dictated by one school of thought. Larrys says ‘ We don’t subscribe to dogma. You could call them natural wines, but we like to think of them as post-natural wines.  We believe in healthy and sustainable vineyard practices and winemaking transparency with as little as possible between the vine and finished wine

In the Laissez-Faire wines, there’s no added tannin, or acid, or animal fining products. There is zero sulfur used throughout the winemaking and only a minimal amount at bottling. They are using alternate varieties and blends to make naturally balanced wines.   From vine to bottle, the wine takes its course, hands-free.  The wines are also vegan friendly.
