The Swartland name originates from a description of the indigenous “renosterbos” or rhino bush, which appears to turn black, (“Swart” in Afrikaans), during the summer months. This 100% Carignan delivers aromas of dried cranberry and raspberry complemented by hints of liquorice and baking spice. Rich and smooth on the palate, the elegant tannins frame the fruit through to a hint of graphite on the finish.

This 2020 Limited Release Mouvedre has benefited from a few years in bottle to give an intensely coloured wine with a perfumed nose of mocha, chocolate and dark berry flavours, which follow through onto the palate. Complemented by spicy undertones and soft mouthfeel that lingers on the palate, this is an excellent interpretation of the classic Rhone grape and a bargain to boot!

This delicious 2018 Limited Release Roussanne is a fantastic homage to the noble Rhone Valley grape. Full-bodied and bursting with citrus, melon, layered with enticing stone fruit aromas. This follows through to the palate with peaches, stone fruit and citrus flavours, complemented by a creamy mouth feel. A full-bodied style with a lingering, zesty aftertaste.

An outstanding expression of Muscadet showing great aromatic purity, with richness and length on the palate. The intense golden colour leads to exotic fruit aromas and notes of ripe, juicy pear. Beautifully balanced with aromatic freshness through to the deliciously persistent finish. A great match for charcuterie, mature cheese or fish and chips.

The grapes come from a specific parcel at the Château de Chasseloir, carefully selected for its position on a south facing slope, which produces berries that achieve good levels of maturity. The schistous soil imparts a balancing, refreshing character to the wine. The vines are carefully managed respecting the environment; herbicides are not used and the soil is ploughed to eliminate grass between the vines. The grapes are manually harvested at optimal ripeness.

2019 Jacquère ‘La Côte’, Domaine Vendange

Wonderful aromatic complexity is highlighted by fresh fruit notes of peach and lime with a delicate honeysuckle character. The light, lemony palate has distinctive minerality and a lovely refreshing finish. Drink now to 2023.

The Domaine de Vendange estate extends over 10 hectares, planted on south-facing slopes where the local Savoie grape varieties fully express their typicity. The 25- year old Jacquère vines yield 65 hectolitres per hectare. The soils are formed of glacial moraine; they are very young limestone soils made up of limestone scree, with layers of silty clay, which produce elegant, fresh wines. The vines are planted at 400 metres’ elevation, yet despite the altitude and mountainous location, the summers are surprisingly hot. This distinctive microclimate encourages the grapes to reach optimum maturity with concentrated juice, balanced by mountain-cool freshness. The vines are cultivated using integrated agriculture practices, maintaining the greatest respect for terroir and tradition. The focus is on green harvesting with pruning, debudding, trellising and leaf stripping. All grapes are hand-harvested. In 2021, the domain moved into conversion to organic status.

Château Lestrille holds the Haute Valeur Environmentale (HVE) certification, which officially recognises the environmental performance of winegrowers, including biodiversity conservation, plant protection strategies, managed fertiliser use and water resource management. The vineyard is cultivated using sustainable methods and reducing the amount of chemicals used in order to respect the land and its environment. The soils are predominantly clay and limestone, which produce elegant wines.

Pale and interesting, Dona Paula’s Sauvage Blanc is the first 100% Sauvignon Blanc sparkling wine from Argentina. Showing intense aromas of orange blossom, white peach, with hints of grapefruit and an intriguing touch of mint, it is crisp, lively and persistent on the palate.

The Los Cerezos Vineyard is located in the Cordón del Plata mountains, at 1,000 metres above sea level. The soils are predominantly loam with a calcium carbonate layer 120cm below the surface, which provides a cooling effect for the vines. The climate here presents warm days and cool nights, with an average temperature variation of 14 °C and an average annual rainfall of 280 mm.

Bodegas Nivarius specialises in the production of white wines from cool-climate vineyards in Rioja.

This 100% Tempranillo Blanco has intense, fruity notes of zesty citrus, ripe apple and pear are complemented by white floral blossom and mineral nuances. Fresh and beautifully balanced, with a creamy texture and a long finish.

Nivarius, meaning ‘snow-drift’, takes its name from the common sight of the snowy blanket which covers the vineyards in winter.

The Tempranillo Blanco grapes are grown in the cool-climate sub regions of the Iregua Valley and the mountainous area of Nalda, Albelda and Clavijo. The warm days and cool nights prolong the ripening period and preserve aromatic richness in the fruit. The soils made up of a mixture of ferrous clay, with calcareous clay. The soils are generally deep with sandy components, which imparts agility and depth to the wine. The Tempranillo Blanco variety produces few clusters, which means it ripens quickly, this trait is balanced by the soils which impart natural freshness. The vineyards are farmed using sustainable methods; chemical sprays are not used, instead organic products are employed in order to protect the environment and biodiversity of the vineyard. This sustainable approach encourages the best expression of the terroir and a true reflection of the aromas and flavours of the white Rioja grape varieties.

Their award-winning Cava ‘+&+’ stands for ‘More and More’, which represents the unparalleled drinkability of this crisp and refreshing sparkling wine.

It is made from 3 native grape varieties, Xarel-lo, Macabeo and Parellada. Xarello, sometimes hyphenated as Xarel-lo, is a light-skinned native Catalan grape, noted for bringing high acidity to the blend, an essential characteristic in sparkling wine, along with refreshing citrusy flavours. Macabeo is a synonym for Viura and produces fresh, floral and aromatic wines, while Parellada flourishes in higher altitude sites where it retains acidity and brings complementary notes of blossom and green apple.

2022 ‘Elysium’ Black Muscat, Quady – 375ml

Elysium is a brilliant crimson-purple colour with aromas of ripe berries, rose petals, strawberries and lychees. The vibrant acidity balances beautifully with the sweetness of this wine, making it very refreshing. This wine is amazing with Chocolate desserts and cheese. This really is one of those wow wines and always elicits the same response – wow!

This wine also has a great birth story – In 1983 a nearby grower brought Andrew Quady some Black Muscat grapes that were previously destined for sacramental wine at a local church. When the church ceased operations, the grower was left with truckloads of perfectly ripe grapes. Upon hearing that newcomer Quady had some success with Orange Muscat, he knocked on Quady’s door and the rest as they say, is history.

The Marras Los Tros Chenin Blanc is made by Martin Lamprecht from grapes sourced from Swartland, a melting pot for hot new talent and South Africa’s leading region for liberal winemaking and experimentation.

This is a gorgeous drinkable pear and stone-fruited wine. The flavours are complemented by crisp freshness and a round mouthfeel with a refreshing finish. In a recent South African tasting held in our shop, this was one of the wines of the night.
