2023 Bobal ‘El Renegado’, Bodegas Nodus

    £1195

A full-bodied and fruity red from the Bobal variety, with delicious notes of ripe fruits of the forest, strawberry and raspberry complemented by liquorice and a hint of smoky spice.

El Renegado (‘renegade’) is a celebration of the old vines that fill the estate, all the fruit for this wine comes from the El Renegado single vineyard, where the vines have a minimum age of 50 years. The estate is situated in one of the premium winemaking areas in the DO Utiel-Requena. The vineyard lies approximately 50 miles inland from Valencia and has a distinct microclimate, which is best described as Mediterranean although it does have some continental influences due to its altitude, which varies from 800 to 900 metres.  The harvests generally start in August and finish at the end of September to early October; the grapes are picked at night or early morning, once the temperature has dropped in order to fully preserve the aromatic properties. The vineyard is certified organic. Bobal is a dark-skinned wine grape variety native to Utiel-Requena, it has thick skin, is late budding and has good drought resistance properties, which ensures Bobal is well-suited to the dry, continental landscape of the region.

This wine is made in honour of the 19 winemakers who founded “Cantine San Marzano” in 1962.  A long time has passed since then, yet their old vines still produce exceptional fruit.

This 2019 vintage has deep and complex flavours of prunes, black cherry jam, spice and tobacco that deliciously weave through the full-bodied palate with its velvety texture and long, complex finish of cocoa, coffee and vanilla bean.

The grapes come from the central area of D.O.P. “Primitivo di Manduria”, where they are grown in very old vineyards in San Marzano and Sava. They are planted at a density of 5,000 bush vines per hectare. The soil is mainly red with a fine texture and is generally calcareous with few emerging rocks. The renowned red hue of the soils is due to the presence of iron oxides. The climate is characterised by high temperatures all year round, very little rainfall and a wide diurnal temperature range, which has a positive influence on the quality of the grapes, concentrating the flavours in the berries.

  • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2019-te-kahu-gimblett-gravels-vineyard-craggy-range/">2019 Te Kahu ‘Gimblett Gravels Vineyard’, Craggy Range</a>

2019 Te Kahu ‘Gimblett Gravels Vineyard’, Craggy Range

    £2995

Te Kahu means ‘the cloak’ in Maori and refers to the mist that envelops Giants Winery in the Tukituki Valley. Legend has it that this mist was used to protect a mythical Maori maiden from the sun as she visited her lover Te Mata.

This wine has concentrated aromas of cassis, black olive and dried tobacco lead to a palate of great energy, with red fruits and liquorice framed by dark chocolate-laced tannins.

Hawke’s Bay’s Gimblett Gravels winegrowing district lies on the ancient bed of the Ngaruroro River, which changed course in 1867 to expose the soils for possible viticulture. The relatively low altitude and proximity to the sea yet sheltered from the direct effect of the sea breeze, creates a temperate maritime climate. This location, altitude, and the stony soil’s warming influence make it the warmest site in Hawke’s Bay. The lack of excessive heat in the Gimblett Gravels is also a critical factor as it means the aromatic characters in the fruit, which contribute to the floral notes, are retained. The soils are composed of small to medium-sized greywacke stones interspersed with layers of silt and sand down to a depth of at least 40 metres. The stones on the surface absorb sunlight and heat during the day and then radiate heat at night, enhancing the vine’s ripening capacity. The stony soil structure allows for very rapid drainage after rainfall events; the low water-holding ability the vine’s growth to be controlled. The soils in this locality produce rich, ripe, yet elegantly structured red wines with a distinctive mineral, hot stone and fine dusty character, affectionately known as ‘Gimblett Dust’.

In the glass, it opens with a lifted bouquet of white flowers, lime blossom, grapefruit zest, and fresh-cut grass, underpinned by subtle flinty minerality, a hallmark of the Kimmeridgian and silex-rich soils. • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/nv-rose-wiston-estate/">NV Rose, Wiston Estate</a>

    NV Rose, Wiston Estate

    £3750

The Rosé NV bursts with aromatic notes of rhubarb, raspberries, sour cherries and redcurrants, with a touch of wild roses and lemon zest. The palate is bright with refreshing acidity, with fine, persistent bubbles and a touch of sherbet and hibiscus on the finish.

The fruit for the non-vintage wines comes from the estate’s own vineyards and a selection of long-term partner growers across the south-east of England. The estate soils are chalk-based, and therefore better for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, while Pinot Meunier prefers a clay soil – so some of this is sourced from clay soils in Kent.

  • <a href="https://wine-republic.co.uk/product/2022-chardonnay-sanford/">2022 Chardonnay, Sanford</a>

    2022 Chardonnay, Sanford

    £4200

A luxurious and elegant Chardonnay with enticing notes of grilled peach, lemon and toasted hazelnuts. The palate of bright fruit and honeycomb is beautifully framed by crisp acidity and has a rich texture that carries through to the long, clean finish.

The fruit comes exclusively from the two estate vineyards in the cool-climate area of Sta. Rita Hills AVA: the Sanford & Benedict Vineyard and the La Rinconada Vineyard. The unusual east-west orientation of the nearby Santa Ynez Mountains, allows cooling maritime breezes from the Pacific Ocean- just seven miles away- to flow over the vineyards, bringing with them morning fog. Afternoon breezes dry out any residual moisture and reduce disease pressure on the vines and clusters. This distinctive mesoclimate promotes a long growing season. The vineyard is split into 52 blocks, each with individual soil composition and microclimate. Broadly, the marine-based soils in the ‘Sanford & Benedict Vineyard’ are a mixture of clay, loam, fractured shale and chert (rocky soil) which force the vine’s roots to dig deep into the soil for nutrients and hydration. The result is naturally low yields of small-berried, concentrated fruit delivering excellent minerality and acidity. The ‘La Rinconada Vineyard’ is made up of sandy, gravelly soil, which imparts precise minerality.

The Trouble with Dreams is a classic blend of barrel-fermented Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, boasting great purity and elegance, with lemon and apple aromas leading to a palate of delicate stone fruit and refreshingly crisp acidity. This is long, complex and absolutely delicious.

A portion of the fruit for this vintage was sourced from the Storrington Priory Vineyard. The majority of grapes came from the exceptional Mount Harry Vineyard near Lewes, in East Sussex. Both of the vineyards are located in Sussex, sitting above the 50th parallel and are influenced by a cool coastal climate. The vineyards have east and southeasterly aspects respectively, encouraging the maximum exposure to the sun, assisting ripening in this capricious climate. The soils are dominated by South Downs chalk, which provides superior drainage for the vines, as well as imparting great elegance and finesse to the wines.
