Tenuta di Bibbiano

2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Capannino, Tenuta di Bibbiano

Tuscany, ItalyVintage: 2019

Bibbiano is one of the oldest estates in the Chianti Classico belonging to the same family. Since 1865, the entrepreneurial spirit and tradition has been handed down from father to son. Their philosophy is based on responsibility and consistency; `Responsibility for what we do for the earth, for the area and for the unique wines; consistency in following one`s vocation, respecting the nature of the territory and family traditions.

This incredible Gran Selezione from Tenuta di Bibbiano glides into the glass with a dense ruby red colour with complex aromas of earthy berries, blood oranges and dried plums with hints of tar, black tea and new leather. The palate is juicy and full-bodied, rounded out with a savoury yet fresh and mineral finish.

Notable Awards

94 Points Robert Parker “The organic 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Capannino is a second careful single-vineyard selection from this leading estate based in Castellina in Chianti. I love the broad intensity of this wine and all the velvety cherry, blackberry and plum it awards. There is a pleasing, almost decadent quality to this wine, yet it remains elegant and within the more constrained framework of Sangiovese. That means it shows good depth and freshness too.”  Monica Larner

Description

Now owned by the brothers Tommaso and Federico Marrocchesi Marzi, Bibbiano is one of the oldest estates in the Chianti Classico belonging to the same family. Since 1865, the entrepreneurial spirit and tradition has been handed down from father to son. Their philosophy is based on responsibility and consistency; `Responsibility for what we do for the earth, for the area and for the unique wines; consistency in following one`s vocation, respecting the nature of the territory and family traditions.` Surrounded by vast olive groves of more than three thousand plants, the estate itself spans over 220 hectares.

The vineyards of Bibbiano extend over a total area of about 30 hectares between 270 and 310 metres above sea level, set on hill slopes that enjoy an enviable exposure and an excellent microclimate, characterised by clay deposits of the Pliocene age that are rich in limestone. As one would expect, Sangiovese is the primary varietal planted, but the brothers also have holdings of Canaiolo, Malvasia Nera, Colorino, Ciliegiolo as well as small amounts of white varieties, Trebbiano, Grechetto and Malvasia di Chianti. It was in 1942 that wine legend Giulio Gambelli arrived at Bibbiano, advising on everything from clonal selection to canopy management. Giulio remained integral to the winery`s restructuring in the following decades. In 1969 the first vinification took place, the first vintage the following year. In 2001, Giulio recruited Stefano Porcinai to take the helm at Bibbiano, as Stefano had been learning from Giulio for some time. Giulio`s passing in 2012 was a true loss to the region – and the winemaking community across the world – yet the wines at Bibbiano remain a constant reminder of his philosophy and his skill. These are terrior driven, classically structured wines, with such grace and charm.

The powerful Vigna del Capannino Chianti Classico Gran Selezione from Italy is a single-varietal wine made from the Sangiovese grape variety. The Vigna del Capannino Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is an Old World wine through and through, as this Italian wine exudes an extraordinary European charm that clearly underlines the success of wines from the Old World. The fact that the Sangiovese grapes thrive under the influence of a warm climate also has an undeniable influence on the ripening of the grapes. Among other things, this results in particularly well-ripened grapes and a rather high alcohol content in the wine. When they are perfectly ripe, the grapes for the Vigna del Capannino Chianti Classico Gran Selezione are harvested exclusively by hand without the help of coarse and less selective grape harvesters. After the harvest, the grapes are immediately taken to the press house. Here they are selected and carefully crushed. Fermentation then takes place in concrete and small wood at controlled temperatures. Fermentation is followed by maturation on the fine lees for several months before the wine is finally drawn off. Ageing in wooden barrels is followed by considerable bottle ageing, which makes this red wine even more complex.
