Gaia2020 ‘Monograph’ Assyrtiko, Gaia Wines
Peloponnese, GreeceVintage: 2020
A youthful and refreshing Assyrtiko, with lifted citrus fruits, exuberant tropical fruits and a touch of honeysuckle. Fresh and zesty with a mineral backbone and lovely, crisp finish.
The grapes for the Monograph Assyrtiko come from vineyards located in the semi-mountainous Koutsi region of Nemea. Unlike the bone-dry, volcanic soils of its native Santorini, the calcareous soils of mainland Greece impart an entirely different character to the varietal, giving it a wider range of exotic fruit flavours and aromas.

Description
One of the pioneers of the modern Greek wine revolution, Gai’a Estate (pronounced Yay-ya) was established in 1994 by Leon Karatsalos and winemaker Yiannis Paraskevopoulos. Their mission was to capture the best that Greece’s indigenous grapes have to offer by merging traditional viticultural and production methods with innovative techniques. The estate is named after “Mother Earth,” in honour of the unique terroir that gives birth to these world-class wines.
The carefully selected grapes were chilled to 4°C before being destemmed and gently pressed. The must was fermented with selected yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, to retain the purity of fruit. The wine was made without any oak influence to preserve the fresh and varietal characteristics of the Assyrtiko grapes and the distinctive expression of the Nemea terroir.
