Glaetzer2021 Bishop Shiraz, Glaetzer
Barossa Valley, AustraliaVintage: 2020
Bishop is a true expression of Barossa Shiraz that is elegantly structured with a long finish.
Made from exceptional old vine fruit was sourced from the famed Ebenezer sub district at the northern tip of the Barossa Valley. These old vines are between 35-120 years old.
In the glass there is an explosion of brooding dark tones with bright cassis and coffee bean hints. The palate has a subtle richness with flavours of dark plum and blackberry intermingled with dark chocolate and dried spice. Generous yet restrained tannin provides exceptional palate length and persistence.
Peak Drinking: Great drinking now but this wine will also benefit from up to 10 – 15 years of careful cellaring.
Bishop is the family name of Colin’s wife’ Judith. Fittingly the sign of Venus, a symbol which has come to represent women and feminine energy, is the centrepiece of the Bishop label. In mythology, the symbol meant the Roman goddess Venus or her Greek equivalent Aphrodite. But the sign has also been linked back to ancient Egypt – a nod to Bishop’s link to Amon-Ra and Anaperenna.

94 Points “At this price point Ben Glaetzer starts to get his mitts on some really mature vine fruit. This is 100% Barossa shiraz sourced from vines that are between 35 and 120 years old. It’s remarkable that such old vine fruit could be included in a wine at this price, but hey, who’s complaining. In this hot year those old vines kicked in and provided some excellent fruit that doesn’t have a hint of being cooked or out of whack in that important flavour sugar trade-off. It gets a reasonable amount of oak with about 40 % new and largely French for about 16 months. Loaded with that mix of black fruits and dark plum with a typical Barossa coffee grinds character. Generous grainy mouth feel with a sustained finish. Another cracking good wine at a mighty good price. ” Ray Jordan, The Wine Pilot, September 2021, Australia www.winepilot.com

Description
Winemaking patriarch Colin Glaetzer established his own label to create wines he’s passionate about – limited quantities of benchmark Barossa Valley reds. Today, Ben Glaetzer carries on this family winemaking tradition and has created a small, focused portfolio of classic Barossa Valley reds which draw on traditional Barossa viticulture but are unmistakably new wave Barossa in style.
The exceptional fruit for all Glaetzer wines is supplied by a loyal group of third and fourth-generation Barossa grape growers and comes from a small sub-region (1.5 sq miles) of the Barossa Valley called Ebenezer. The dry-grown vines range from 30-120 years old and are a unique part of Australia’s viticultural heritage; producing wines of great intensity and elegance.
Ben has won many awards for his efforts including; Robert M.Parker Jnr – ‘Wine Personality of the Year’ and ‘Qantas Young Winemaker of the Year’ among others.
Fermented in 1 and 2 tonne open fermenters. Extended maceration was employed to enable good tannin development so the wine is soft and approachable early. Matured for 16 months in a mix of 40% new oak and 60% 2— 3 year old oak hogshead barrels (90% French / 10% American).
