Mount Langi Ghiran

2020 Cliff Edge Shiraz, Mount Langi Ghiran

Grampians, Victoria, AustraliaVintage: 2020

Sourced from a selection of blocks across the historic Mount Langi Ghiran vineyard situated in the Grampians region of Victoria, where the combination of Langi’s cool climates, old vines and granite sands produce Shiraz with great intensity, purity and finesse.

In the glass, it opens with aromas of blackberry, black cherries, vanilla, tar and baking spice.  The palate is rich and alluring with raspberries, red currant, red liquorice and blackberry mixed with baking spice and mocha notes. Pure and silky.  Gorgeous.

Notable Awards

96 points, Halliday Wine Companion  ‘ Whole-berry wild fermentation in concrete, both small open-topped and large closed fermenters. Left 14 days on skins, matured 14 months in French barriques (30% new). Often cited as a benchmark cool-climate shiraz, there’s no denying this is yet another impressive, elegant shiraz from a strong vintage. Boasts refined richness and a depth of flavour that is well-matched to a vivacious personality. Fruit is the star, with flecks of pepper and spice assisted by plump tannins. That’s a WOW!.’

Description

Established in 1969, Mount Langi Ghiran, the Aboriginal for ‘home of the yellow tailed black cockatoo’, is set amongst the dramatic backdrop of the Great Dividing Range in the Grampians region of Victoria. The first vines were planted on the property in the late 1800s, but it was in 1969, when the Fratin brothers replanted the vineyards, that Mount Langi Ghiran really came into its own. In 1980, the talented and energetic wine consultant Trevor Mast worked with the Fratin brothers raising the quality and six years later he purchased the property. Trevor pioneered the cool-climate style and with that, one of Australia’s most iconic wines the Langi Shiraz, was born. Cultivated sustainably, the estate is a member of Sustainable Wine Growing Australia. In 2018 Adam Louder, previously a cellar hand under Trevor Mast, became Head Winemaker, he crafts iconic wines that are elegant, full of finesse and the epitome of cool-climate Shiraz.

100% whole berry ferments in both small open, and large, open-top concrete fermenters. A mixture of plunging and pump-overs during an average of two weeks on skins. Natural yeasts were used and once ferment was complete, the wines were pressed to tank to settle overnight and then transferred to barrels to complete MLF.
