Bodegas Vinatigo2020 Marmajuelo, Bodegas Vinatigo
Tenerife, SpainVintage: 2020
The Marmajuelo’s grape origin is still shrouded in mystery. Ever since winemaker Juan Jesus discovered a few vines in the late 1990s on the island of El Hierro, he has been completely in love with the variety and under his direction Bodegas Vinatigo has replanted it in the north-west of Tenerife. 25 hectares exist in the entire world, scattered across tiny plots in Tenerife and El Hierro, where the vineyards perch over the ocean and benefit from its cooling breezes.
The maritime freshness of these locations translates beautifully into the wine, with vibrant, saline acidity to complement the tropical aromas of passion fruit, pineapple and banana leaves. Textured, fresh and so persistent; a perfect wine to pair with seafood and fresh fish.

Description
The philosophy behind Bodegas Viñátigo is to revive and promote the extensive varietal heritage of the Canary Islands. The journey started in the 1990s, at a century-old plot in the village of La Guancha, in the north of Tenerife, where the traditional varieties of Listán Blanco and Listán Negro were vinified in the old family winery. With an uncompromising eye on quality, this dynamic winemaking project has subsequently expanded to produce thrilling, modern wines from varieties such as Gual, Marmajuelo and Vijariego. Bodegas Viñátigo’s ethos is respectful of the environment, both in the vineyard where sustainable winegrowing practices are applied; and in the construction of its state-of-the-art winery which was built in 1997 from local materials and designed to minimise energy consumption
The grapes were cooled to 5°C prior to vinification. Sulphur was not added, because at these temperatures oxidation takes place more slowly, which permits the winemakers to work without the use of additives. 85% was fermented with an indigenous yeast in stainless steel tanks, with 15% in concrete egg-shaped tanks at 16°C. The wine was aged on its lees adding complexity and texture.
