Glaetzer2021 Anaperenna, Ben Glaetzer
Barossa Valley, AustraliaVintage: 2021
Crafted by acclaimed winemaker Ben Glaetzer, the 2021 Anaperenna is a powerful expression of the Barossa Valley, where ancient vines, meticulous winemaking, and rich storytelling come together. The Glaetzer family has been crafting wine in the Barossa for over 30 years, and Ben continues that legacy with a focus on purity of fruit and site expression. The Anaperenna is his flagship blend, a seamless fusion of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from exceptional old vines in the famed Ebenezer subregion, with some vines dating back over 130 years.
Named after Anna Perenna, the Roman goddess of renewal and longevity, Anaperenna evokes timeless elegance and enduring vitality. The label’s Egyptian Ankh symbol reinforces this theme of regeneration and life, echoing the wine’s capacity to evolve gracefully over decades.
In the glass, the 2021 Anaperenna nose is seductive and complex, offering layers of dark berries, cardamom, dried anise, and fresh thyme. On the palate, it is voluptuous yet refined, with the structural drive of Cabernet Sauvignon perfectly cradling the lush core of Shiraz fruit. Blackcurrant, plum, and blueberry unfold across a dense, velvety mouthfeel, while subtle oak and fine-grained tannins guide the wine toward an impressively long, satisfying finish.
This is a wine of depth, balance, and lasting beauty, designed to impress upon release but capable of cellaring gracefully through 2040 and beyond. The 2021 Anaperenna is a testament to Glaetzer’s mastery and the enduring magic of the Barossa.
Notable Awards
95/100 – James Halliday “Ben Glaetzer does the great Aussie blend well, consistently offering a polished, contemporary take on the very popular wine style. It’s a deeply fruited affair, all cassis, blackberry and black cherry tones with impressive weight, depth and purity. It’s not a wine for the oak-shy, as the cedar and vanilla tones make their presence felt, but all that fruit just sucks it up like a greedy Labrador. Finishing bold with tight, compact powdery tannin and cassis leaving the impression that this will cellar like a champion.”

Description
Winemaking patriarch Colin Glaetzer established his own label to create wines he’s passionate about – limited quantities of benchmark Barossa Valley reds. Today, Ben Glaetzer carries on this family winemaking tradition and has created a small, focused portfolio of classic Barossa Valley reds which draw on traditional Barossa viticulture but are unmistakably new wave Barossa in style.
The exceptional fruit for all Glaetzer wines is supplied by a loyal group of third and fourth-generation Barossa grape growers and comes from a small sub-region (1.5 sq miles) of the Barossa Valley called Ebenezer. The dry-grown vines range from 30 to 120 years old and are a unique part of Australia’s viticultural heritage, producing wines of great intensity and elegance.
Ben has won many awards for his efforts, including Robert M. Parker Jr. – ‘Wine Personality of the Year’ and ‘Qantas Young Winemaker of the Year’, among others.
Fermented in 1 and 2 tonne open fermenters, hand plunged 3 times daily. Matured for 16 months in 100% new oak hogshead barrels (92% French and 8% American) and matured on lees to maintain fruit profile and animation. Bottled unfiltered to ensure minimal intervention with the wine’s natural characteristics.
