Boekenhoutskloof

2021 Syrah, Boekenhoutskloof

Western Cape, South AfricaVintage: 2021

Established in 1776 in the remote reaches of the Franschhoek Valley, Boekenhoutskloof is one of South Africa’s most esteemed wine estates. Under the visionary direction of Marc Kent, the winery has become renowned for crafting expressive, site-driven wines that reflect the unique terroirs of the Cape. The Boekenhoutskloof Syrah is a benchmark expression of Swartland Syrah, sourced from two exceptional sites: the rugged, schist-rich slopes of Porseleinberg (90%) and the sandstone-tinged Goldmine vineyards (10%) on the flanks of the Kasteelberg.

The 2021 vintage opens with a concentrated, perfumed nose of ripe plum, violet petals, and exotic spice. There’s an immediate sense of depth and precision, with layers of black and red berries, cracked pepper, and subtle earthy undertones. The palate is bold and structured, offering flavours of blueberry compote, black liquorice, and anise, interwoven with a vibrant minerality and hints of iron and tar. Rich yet poised, the mouthfeel is full-bodied and complex, with polished tannins and a taut, lively acidity that drives the wine forward.

The finish is long and savoury, lingering with nuances of sweet tobacco, black cardamom, and charred wood, a compelling reflection of its Swartland origins and a Syrah of serious pedigree.

Why we love it

A powerful yet refined wine that captures the wild, stony soul of Swartland terroir – an icon in the making.

Notable Awards

97/100 – Tim Atkin MW. “Given that 90% of its raw material comes from Porseleinberg – the other 10% comes from Boekenhoutskloof’s Roundstone property – it’s no surprise that this is such an impressive Syrah. Fermented with 65% whole bunches, it combines fynbos, lavender and Asian spice aromas with a palate of white pepper, barbecued meat, oregano and blackberry framed by sappy, granular tannins. World-class. Drink 2025-35.”

Description

Boekenhoutskloof is one of South Africa’s most prestigious and internationally acclaimed wineries, located in the Franschhoek Valley, Western Cape. Established in 1776 and revitalised in 1993, the estate has become synonymous with quality, innovation, and the revival of South African fine wine.

The name “Boekenhoutskloof” means “ravine of the Boekenhout,” referencing a native Cape beech tree prized for its fine wood. The estate’s rebirth under winemaker and owner Marc Kent focused on planting noble varietals such as Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Semillon, and Viognier, aligned with a philosophy of minimal intervention and terroir expression.

Boekenhoutskloof is especially renowned for its Syrah with flagship labels such as Boekenhoutskloof Syrah and The Chocolate Block, a cult-status red blend that has become one of South Africa’s most sought-after wines. Their dedication to site selection and meticulous viticulture extends into the Swartland, where they source grapes from old-vine heritage vineyards to complement their Franschhoek production.

Today, Boekenhoutskloof is a benchmark for modern South African winemaking, consistently earning high international praise and playing a pivotal role in the country’s global wine renaissance.

Our Syrah grapes were hand-harvested into lug boxes and transported to Boekenhoutskloof in Franschhoek for vinification. Grapes were cooled in our cold room, then transferred to our tulip-shaped concrete tanks for fermentation. A combination of partially destemmed and whole-bunch (65%) clusters fermented spontaneously with minimal sulphur additions and no acidification. A soft délestage was performed 2-3 per day. Once maceration is complete, the skins are basket pressed and gravity-fed into traditional 2,500l Austrian oak foudres and 600l demi-muids for further ageing of up to 18 months.
