Spoke2023 Awatere Sauvignon Blanc, Spoke
Marlborough, South Island, New ZealandVintage: 2023
The 2023 Awatere Sauvignon Blanc from Spoke Wines is a striking expression of coastal Marlborough, shaped by the cooler, wind-kissed climate of the Awatere Valley. Spoke is the visionary collaboration between Liam Steevenson MW and Marlborough winemaker Ben Glover, whose decades of experience in the region are channelled into site-focused, expressive wines that reflect both land and hand.
This wine is sourced from the family’s vineyard along the Opawa River, where 14 hectares of vines, including Sauvignon Blanc, grow in fertile loam on north-facing slopes at 120 metres elevation, just under two miles from the sea. The coastal influence and prevailing breezes create a distinct microclimate, cooler than the rest of Marlborough, lending the wines their signature saline edge, lifted aromatics, and refined texture.
In the glass, the 2023 Awatere Sauvignon Blanc is bright and enticing. Aromas of white peach, gooseberry, and citrus leap forward, with layers of mineral tension and a sherbet-like vibrancy adding depth and dimension. The palate is taut and elegant, favouring precision over exuberance, with a chalky, saline finish that reflects the vineyard’s maritime proximity. This is not your typical tropical style Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. It is more restrained, more European in style.

5/5 Points. Michael Cooper “Already delicious, the 2023 vintage has a strong personality. A single-vineyard wine, it is ripely scented, full-bodied, and dry, in an intensely varietal style with crisp, penetrating, ripely herbaceous flavours, a hint of saltiness, and a very long finish.”

Description
The Dillon’s Point subregion of Marlborough in New Zealand is home to the Glover family and their wines. After four generations of dairy farmers lived and worked on this bit of land, Owen and Wendy Glover decided to give grapes a go and pioneered vine plantings in the subregion in the 1980s. Nineteen years on, the estate is run by winemaker and something of a local legend, Ben Glover. Ben is a winemaker well worth following. Since launching his career in 1995, Ben has worked at several top New Zealand estates, including Wither Hills, and was an inaugural 2001 Len Evans scholar. He has spent years honing his considerable skills, all the while working as a highly respected judge at national and international competitions. Today, Ben continues to be innovative and questioning, as illustrated by his collaboration with Liam Steevenson MW as part of the ethically and environmentally excellent SPOKE project. The wines of the estate reflect Ben’s trademark expressively elegant yet characterful style in aromatic wines of, as he describes it, ‘power and place that tread lightly on your palate’. As part of that, the estate achieved organic certification in time for the 2020 vintage.
Grapes are machine harvested, then fermented cool in tank for 3 weeks and left to relax for 3 weeks on gross lees, given a light racking and then prepared for bottling in August.
