Tumbleweed2023 Big Sky Syrah, Tumbleweed
Overberg, South AfricaVintage: 2023
“The High-Road Haze”
Deep purple in colour, this Syrah brims with aromas of blackberry, blueberry, and violets, laced with white pepper and a touch of smoked meat. On the palate, it’s sleek and pure-fruited, with juicy dark berries flowing into savoury spice and a fine mineral edge. Medium-bodied yet powerful, finishing long and precise with cool-climate freshness.
For when: the braai is smoking and stories are taller than the flames.
Pairs with: ribeye steak, boerewors rolls, or charred peppers.
If this wine were a jacket, it’d be a perfectly worn denim – rugged but easy to love.
Tumbleweed is a free-spirited Cape project sourcing fruit from distinctive sites across the Western Cape. The Big Sky Syrah captures high-elevation character, freshness, energy, and purity, all shaped by wild ferment and minimal intervention. It’s Syrah with skyline brightness and a savoury twist.

Description
Bruce Jack Wines is made up of a small, dynamic team which aims to celebrate authenticity and provenance, not just in the wine they craft, but in everything they do. Head winemakers Bruce Jack and Marlize Beyers have worked together since 2002, and both have extensive experience in many winemaking regions around the world. Human culture started at the tip of Africa, despite it being ‘off the charts’, so it is fitting that something as culturally rooted as wine should thrive there, inspiring the ‘Off the Charts’ wine range, crafted from grape varieties and regions that are South Africa’s viticultural cornerstones. The labels draw inspiration from the untamed majesty of the wilderness and the symbolic Basotho blanket. The Tumbleweed series of wines capture the essence of the raw, unyielding beauty of this wild region, with vibrant flavours, they showcase the typicity of the grape varietals and the character of the land. In 2023, Bruce Jack featured for the fourth consecutive year in the World’s Most Admired Wine Brands, awarded by Drinks International.
The destemmed and carefully sorted berries were transferred to open-top fermenters, where daily punch downs took place by hand. Fermentation on the skins lasted for 14- 21 days before being pressed with basket press to barrel. The wine underwent 100% malolactic conversion in barrel, rounding out the palate. Maturation lasted for 18 months in 228, 300 and 500-litre barrels, of which 28% were new oak. 7% whole-bunch carbonic fermentation Shiraz was blended for further complexity.
