The aromas are powerful and complex encapsulating a wealth of ripe black cherries, blackberries with subtle hints of white pepper and spice. The rich and harmonious palate delivers soft flavours of plum and cherry notes, underpinned by toasty oak and velvety chocolate. Silky tannins lead to a long, persistent finish.
Wallace takes on the traditional Barossa Valley blend of Shiraz and Grenache in a modern way. The Shiraz brings backbone, flesh and body to the wine with the Grenache adding a soft, vibrant juiciness.
Wallace is made from exceptional old vine fruit was sourced from the famed Ebenezer sub district at the northern tip of the Barossa Valley. Vine ages are 50—80 years old for the Shiraz and 50—100 years old for the Grenache.
In the glass, the wine has lifted aromas of bright red fruits with fresh spice notes of star anise and cedar. The palate has bright red berry fruit, redcurrant and liquorice flavours that complement the soft and rounded Grenache fruit tannin and the savoury finish of Shiraz. Lovely refreshing acidity provides both lift and depth.

Wallace is an ancestral name of Colin’s wife, Judith, whose family hail from the old market town of Cupar in Fife, Scotland. Judith’s Celtic ancestry is reflected in the three elements of the Wallace symbol – the Celtic cross, thistle and the Celtic knot pattern.

Bishop is the family name of Colin’s wife’ Judith. Fittingly the sign of Venus, a symbol which has come to represent women and feminine energy, is the centrepiece of the Bishop label. In mythology, the symbol meant the Roman goddess Venus or her Greek equivalent Aphrodite. But the sign has also been linked back to ancient Egypt – a nod to Bishop’s link to Amon-Ra and Anaperenna.
The Abednego completes the Icon trio from Grant Burge Wines, sitting alongside the highly awarded Meshach and Shadrach which are Grant’s flagship Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is 100% Barossa using fruit sourced from Grant’s own vineyards with an average age of 110 years. The old vines deliver fruit with incredible concentration and depth giving the resultant wine the ability to develop over many years. The iconic 2016 Abednego is a richly flavoured and elegantly structured wine with a beautifully balanced palate, complemented by flavours of plums, spice and liquorice with hints of vanilla. The origin of the name of this wine comes from the fact that Abednego in Hebrew means the ‘Servant of Nego’, the Babylonian god of wisdom. Abednego, with Shadrach and Meshach, were cast into the fiery furnace by King Nebuchadnezzar in 600BC. Grant Burge named his flagship and icon Shiraz Meshach (after his great grandfather Meshach Burge 1843-1942), and the icon Cabernet Sauvignon Shadrach (inspired by the story). This wine is Abednego to completer the trio with a trio of the Barossa’s finest grape varieties.

On the palate, layers of rich blackberries are elegantly balanced with vibrant red fruit, mocha, liquorice, and hints of fresh-cut cedar. Behind the name: In Egyptian mythology, the Eye of Ra was the powerful feminine counterpart to the sun god Ra. The Eye’s forceful protective deeds were celebrated alongside its nurturing life-giving gifts to Egypt. The symbol depicts the sun surrounded by protective cobras and wings.
