    2019 ‘Altitude 1350’, Doña Paula

    £2295

This complex blend of Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Casavecchia is made grapes picked at an altitude of 1,350 metres above sea level hence the name ‘Altitude 1350’.  It is one of a trio of Dona Paula wines focusing on the altitude of unique and exceptional vineyards.  The other 2 being ‘Altitude 969’ and ‘Altitude 1100’.  All three are exceptional and available from us.

    £2295

This stunning blend of Petit Verdot, Bonarda and Malbecis made grapes picked at an altitude of 969 metres above sea level hence the name ‘Altitude 969’.  It is one of a trio of Dona Paula wines focusing on the altitude of unique and exceptional vineyards.  The other 2 being ‘Altitude 1100’ and ‘Altitude 1350’.  All three are exceptional and available from us.

The Bonarda vines are planted in the lowest part of the same vineyard, at approximately 908 metres’ elevation, where the soil is mostly clay with gravel and pebbles. The Malbec also comes from the same vineyard. The double cordon trained vines are drip irrigated and they yield between seven to 10 tonnes per hectare. The climate is characterised by its warm days and cool nights, with thermal amplitude of 14°C and an average annual rainfall of 250 millimetres. • 2019 ‘Altitude 1100’, Doña Paula Red Wine

    2019 ‘Altitude 1100’, Doña Paula

    £2295

This exceptional blend of Malbec, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon is made grapes picked at an altitude of 1,100 metres above sea level hence the name ‘Altitude 1100’.  It is one of a trio of Dona Paula wines focusing on the altitude of unique and exceptional vineyards.  The other 2 being ‘Altitude 969’ and ‘Altitude 1350’.  All three are exceptional and available from us.

In the glass the ‘Altitude 1100’ has floral aromas of violet and rosehip from the Malbec that are complemented by spicy notes, good volume and silky tannins from the Syrah, while the Cabernet Sauvignon imparts a great structure in this complex and balanced wine.

‘Altitude 1100’ comes from three blocks in the Los Indios vineyard, which is located in El Cepillo, San Carlos, in the Uco Valley, at 1,100 metres above sea level. The climate is characterised by warm days and cold nights; the average temperature variation is 16 °C, which encourages a long ripening period in which the grapes slowly build aromatic complexity and the fruit is balanced by refreshing acidity. The average annual rainfall reaches 300 millimetres. The sandy loam soil offers good drainage and encourages low fertility; in some sectors, there are gravel and stone deposits of colluvial origin, bound by a thick, 70 centimetre-deep layer of calcium carbonate known as black caliche. Black caliche appears in very old soils, where the vine vigour is reduced so the grapes produced have concentrated flavours. At Doña Paula, the vineyards have always been managed using sustainable agricultural practices.

  • 2022 ‘The Apple Doesn’t Fall Far From The Tree’ Malbec, Matias Riccitelli Red Wine

2022 ‘The Apple Doesn’t Fall Far From The Tree’ Malbec, Matias Riccitelli

    £2475

Deep purple in colour, with beautiful aromas of wild dark fruits, vanilla and chocolate on the nose. This is a complex and rich Malbec with smooth ripe tannins and a long finish.

The grapes are hand-picked from Matias Riccitelli’s vineyards. Half the grapes come from the Perdriel vineyard at 950 metres above sea level in the subregion of Lujan de Cuyo. Located at the banks of the Mendoza River, the rocky soil delivers a rich wine, with ripe fruit and smooth tannins. The other half comes from Gualtallary, which is situated at 1,400 metres altitude in the northern part of the Uco Valley. The vines here deliver fresh, spicy Malbec from calcareous soils. A green harvest is performed in December to concentrate the flavours in the berries. Both vineyards are influenced by diurnal temperature changes which encourages a long hang time, promoting concentrated flavours in the berries while retaining balancing acidity.

  • 2021 ‘The Apple Doesn’t Fall Far From The Tree’ Bonarda, Matias Riccitelli Red Wine

2021 ‘The Apple Doesn’t Fall Far From The Tree’ Bonarda, Matias Riccitelli

    £2475

This deep purple-hued wine has a beautiful aroma of red dark fruit combined with a touch of mint, layered with chocolate notes. Complex and smooth on the palate with ripe tannins and a long finish.

The Vistalba vineyards are located in Lujan de Cuyo and are situated at an altitude of 1,050 metres above sea level. The continental climate is characterised by cold winters and mild summers, with warm days and cool nights. The heat assists the promotion of sugar levels in the ripening grapes, while the coolness of the night retains the acidity level, achieving healthy and balanced berries. The average rainfall is 200mm and the traditional technique of flooding is used for irrigating the vines. The average age of the vines is 60 years; planted as “ espaldero” (vertical shoot position) resulting in a naturally low yield which results in a fresh wine of great concentration. The Vistalba soils are clay, loamy soils above the rocky subsoil. This soil has good drainage, promoting the healing and growth of roots.

    £3775

Finca Decero is a world-class wine producer located in the Agrelo sub-appellation of Luján de Cuyo in the northwestern part of the province of Mendoza.  Their famed Remolinos Vineyard derives its name from the little whirlwind spiral formations of soil which form in the afternoon as the gentle wind lifts the dry soil from the paths of the vineyard into swaying ‘dust devils’.  This natural phenomenon draws the attention of our overly protective Lechuza owls in the vineyard who sometimes take flight seemingly to chase them away!

2018 is a stellar vintage in Mendoza and will be long remembered.

The 2018 Decero Mini Ediciones Cabernet Franc is one of their ‘rare varieties & limited edition’ wines. Of this vintage, only 7,192 bottles were made. The wine shows nuances of pepper, graphite and plum notes with fresh aromatics and taut acidity resulting in a well-structured, elegant Cabernet Franc with great potential for ageing.

  • 2018 Old Vines Trousseau From Patagonia, Matias Riccitelli Red Wine

2018 Old Vines Trousseau From Patagonia, Matias Riccitelli

    £3875

Made from 100% Trousseau this elegant wine offers aromatic complexity with wild red-berried fruits and mineral notes complemented by spicy, floral hues. Refreshing and silky, this is light but with good structure and a long finish.

The Trousseau grapes come from the traditional vine-growing sites of Allen and Ing Heuergo in the province of Rio Negro, Patagonia, approximately halfway between the Andes Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. Situated on the 39° latitude south, the sunlight exposure is more intense than in northern areas, but at this latitude, the nights are much colder. This daily diurnal temperature range is excellent for the production of quality grapes; the nightly cooling-off extends the ripening period, allowing the grapes to develop rich varietal characteristics while retaining balancing acidity. The low yielding vines were planted at the beginning of the 1970s and they are ungrafted allowing for complete interaction between the silty soils and the vine. The vines are cultivated naturally following organic principles resulting in wines that are expressive of the terroir and their varietal characteristics. The grapes are hand-harvested once they have reached optimal maturity. The long-forgotten variety of Trousseau is a dark-skinned variety that originated in Jura, France and is a synonym for Bastardo.
