2020 Sauvignon Blanc, Mulderbosch
£1595Add to BasketMulderbosch Sauvignon Blanc was one of the vanguards of the South African industry in the early 1990s; it was memorably described by Jancis Robinson as ‘the Cloudy Bay of South Africa’. The playing field has evolved significantly since then, and in order to remain distinctive, Mulderbosch began ageing their Sauvignon Blanc in neutral 500-litre barrels from the 2016 vintage.
This 2020 vintage is unmistakably Sauvignon in character, with striking citrus aromas and a hint of herbal lemon-grass on the nose. Green fig flavours on the palate are lifted by natural acidity and balanced by a firm, chalky texture.
The grapes come from Mulderbosh’s estate vineyard and from the slopes of Simonsberg, the Polkadraai ward and vineyards close to False Bay on the lower slopes of the Helderberg. Some of the vineyards are within two and a half miles of False Bay, where the strong influence of the Atlantic Ocean has a cooling effect during the warmest months of the year, encouraging balancing acidity to the concentrated fruit produced in this warm region.

2018 Pinotage, Olifantsberg
£1595Add to BasketBright notes of cherry, wild strawberry fruit and ripe raspberry are interlaced by hints of spice and earthy notes. This wine is made in a pure fruit-driven style, with supple tannins and reveals a fresh and elegant expression of Pinotage.
The vineyard is located on the fertile slopes of the Olifantsberg Mountain Range where it endures wide diurnal temperature differences and strong winds, at altitudes from 250 to 450 metres above sea level. During the winter the mountain peaks are snow-covered, keeping the vines dormant for longer. Cold winters, coupled with the summer winds, ensures the slow ripening of the grapes; helps to maintain healthy vines; and contributes freshness and elegance to the wines. The soils in the vineyard comprise a unique sandy shale with a clay subsoil, which lends structure to the resulting wine. The Pinotage trellised vines are 11 years old and are farmed in a sustainable manner.

The vineyard is located on the fertile slopes of the Olifantsberg Mountain Range at altitudes from 250 metres to 450 metres above sea level. Cold winters, coupled with the summer winds, ensures the slow ripening of the grapes and helps to maintain healthy vines, contributing freshness and elegance to the wines. The vineyards are farmed using sustainable practices, helping to maintain the biodiversity within the vineyard and soils. The Roussanne and Grenache Blanc are young plantings on the estate and are grown on shale soils, the Chenin Blanc is grown on sandstone/shale soils, which lends freshness to the wine. 2022 Sauvignon Blanc, Baleia Wines

This Sauvignon Blanc is lovely and juicy with tropical fruits such as passion fruit and lychee dancing on the palate with saline undertones from the mineral soil in which it is grown.
Making Sauvignon Blanc one is often faced with the temptation of making very upfront and unnuanced wines that lack a sense of place. Baleia has chosen to take the road less travelled by choosing texture and minerality from the site to portray the beauty of the terroir.
